What Happened
Novo Nordisk will bring 12 abstracts on semaglutide to The Liver Meeting 2026, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases congress in Denver, which runs November 5 through 9. The company announced the slate on October 28 without disclosing findings, effect sizes, or whether any analysis met its pre-specified endpoints. The work surfaces in a poster session on Friday, November 6, from 13:00 to 14:00, with two oral presentations scheduled for November 8.
The abstracts fall into three groups: real-world analyses of semaglutide in MASH, post hoc analyses of the phase 3 ESSENCE trial, and work on efruxifermin, an investigational fibroblast growth factor 21 analogue.
What Is Actually Being Presented
The largest dataset is RHODIUM-2, a retrospective analysis comparing 2,479 adults with MASH who started semaglutide against 70,702 who did not, tracking liver enzymes and cardiometabolic markers. A companion analysis compares semaglutide with resmetirom on the same markers.
Two presentations address populations outside the usual weight-centric framing. One is a post hoc analysis of ESSENCE participants who had MASH without obesity, a group frequently excluded from metabolic trial designs. The other, an oral session on November 8, applies an AI-based histologic analysis to the SYMMETRY trial of efruxifermin in compensated cirrhosis — the least reversible stage of the disease.
Who Is Affected
The immediate audience is hepatologists and endocrinologists choosing between resmetirom and a GLP-1 for biopsy-confirmed MASH, plus the payers who will decide whether real-world evidence justifies broader coverage. The secondary audience is less clinical: a gray market now markets peptides with liver-health claims that no trial has tested. When conference abstracts circulate without context, marketing copy tends to arrive before the data does.
Timeline
ESSENCE randomized 1,197 participants 2:1 to semaglutide or placebo for 240 weeks. Part 1 read out liver histology at 72 weeks and was published in 2025; part 2, which follows liver-related clinical events, is still running. AASLD opens November 5, posters land November 6, and the efruxifermin oral is November 8 at 14:30. Full abstract text typically appears in the meeting program on the day of presentation.
What This Means for Researchers
Evidence hierarchy matters here. RHODIUM-2 is a retrospective claims analysis: it can show association, not causation, and people who start semaglutide differ systematically from those who do not — in weight, diabetes status, and access to care. A 70,702-person comparator makes the confidence interval narrow, not the confounding small.
Poster abstracts are not peer review. They routinely report effect estimates without full denominators. The efruxifermin analysis is also a surrogate-endpoint question: AI-derived histology scoring is not the same as fewer hospitalizations or deaths, and cirrhosis outcomes require years of follow-up to observe.
How to Verify Your Peptides
If you are researching these compounds outside a trial, documentation should carry more weight than marketing. Ask for a certificate of analysis that names the testing laboratory, reports HPLC purity and mass-spec identity, and matches the batch number on the vial. Our testing guides walk through how to read a COA and what a legitimate result should contain.
Safe Alternatives
Nothing in this abstract slate changes what is legally available. Approved incretin therapies remain prescription-only for diabetes and obesity, and resmetirom is approved for a defined fibrosis population. Our peptide reference pages summarize the published evidence, and vendor pages list suppliers by documentation quality rather than price alone.
