A year of keeping it off, one grocery receipt at a time

Last April I hit my goal, and tomorrow marks 52 weeks of not losing — just holding. I thought maintenance would be a second diet. Mostly it’s been boring logistics. I still buy two rotisserie chickens on Sundays, portion them into containers, and keep frozen edamame in the door. Dinners are protein, a pile of vegetables, and whatever carb my husband wants. I walk 20 minutes after eating instead of negotiating with myself about the gym. The strangest part: I no longer plan around food. Last week I went to a birthday party, ate a slice of cake, and didn’t spend the next day compensating. That would’ve been unthinkable two years ago. I’m not white-knuckling it, but I’m also not asleep at the wheel. For anyone past the first year of maintenance: which habit stayed automatic without you having to think about it?

My chaotic-night save is ground turkey taco meat frozen in silicone muffin cups. Two pucks + bagged slaw + microwave rice = dinner nobody complains about. Snack drawer: top shelf is kids’ stuff, bottom is a shoebox of pre-portioned nuts, cheese sticks, roasted chickpeas. If it’s not already counted, I eat it standing over the sink. Do you shred the rotisserie chickens right away, or leave them whole? Ours get picked clean by 5pm if I don’t.

Congrats on 52 weeks — that’s the part nobody throws confetti for. What helped me was keeping a “defaults” note in my phone: 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners that work, with the grocery list attached. If I’m bored, I swap one sauce or one veg, not the whole structure. I also started buying pre-cooked chicken breast packs for the weeks rotisserie gets old — not cheaper, but zero shredding at 7 p.m. has kept me out of the drive-thru more than once. Do you still track anything on maintenance, or is it more of a vibe/check-the-pants system now?

The snack drawer is my whole maintenance plan some weeks. I do a clear bin of grab-and-go proteins (turkey sticks, cheese cubes, roasted chickpeas) and a fridge bin of cut veg + hummus, then restock

Fifty-two weeks of holding is quietly heroic. I’m about 14 months into my own version, and my most useful tool is a note on the fridge: what I actually ate vs. what I bought. It showed me I buy spinch aspirationally but carrots reliably. So now Sunday is two sheet pans of roasted vegetables, a pot of rice for my husband’s carb, and a walk while the oven works. Weeknights are assemble-not-cook. Sharp question: what’s your fallback meal when the containers run out and you’re too tired to improvise?
