i’m 52, an empty nester, and down 58 pounds over about 14 months. Most mornings I walk three miles before breakfast, and I’ve actually started cooking again — sheet pans of peppers, onions, chicken thighs, whatever’s in the fridge. The changes feel good. But when I wave goodbye to my neighbor, my upper arms keep waving a little longer. My belly has some crepey folds too. I’m not expecting a miracle or asking for medical advice, just wondering about other people’s long-term experience. Did your skin gradually tighten with time, or did it mostly stay the same? I know age and genetics matter, and I’m trying to make peace with the body that got me here. Still, I’d love to hear what your version of settling in looked like after a big loss.
Wondering if my arms will ever look less crepey
Fellow 50-something here. Huge congrats on 58 lbs. The crepey look is often less about skin and more about what’s underneath it after a big loss — arms can look deflated if they don’t have a reason to hold muscle. Are you doing any resistance work yet? Not walking with 2-lb pink dumbbells; actual progressive stuff. I started 3x/week: overhead triceps extensions, cable pushdowns, incline curls, lateral raises, 2–3 sets, adding reps or weight over time. Protein at every meal and sleep made the biggest difference. Skin didn’t snap back like an infomercial, but my arms definitely look firmer. Worth trying before writing it off as genetics.
Fellow spreadsheet person here. I’m down 63 lb over 16 months (daily weight, monthly tape). My upper arm circumference actually dropped last, after my waist and hips, but the crepey texture didn’t move with the circumference trendline at all. What finally made a visible difference for me: 2x/week resistance (rows, overhead press, triceps) plus keeping protein around my goal, and taking progress photos in the same window light every 4 weeks. Walking was great for the scale but did zero for my arms. Sharp question: what’s your current loss rate? Mine was ~0.9 lb/wk for the first 6 months, then ~0.25, and the arm skin looked worst during the slow phase.
Three years in, I remember a thread last winter about the “last 10 pounds being mostly skin.” For me, arms were the slowest. What helped was adding two short strength sessions a week—nothing heroic, just 15 minutes with dumbbells and resistance bands—plus taking monthly photos in the same light. The crepey look faded way slower than the tape measure, but it did change. Also, I started mixing a scoop of unflavored protein into my morning coffee, because I wasn
