I’m 11 months in and down 58 lb, but my smart scale’s body-fat number bounces around by 2–3 points depending on sodium and hydration. Waist measurement and monthly photos are trending steadily; the body-fat reading is noisy. I’m evidence-minded and don’t want to chase hype, so I’m wondering whether it’s worth paying for a DEXA scan or if I should just track waist-to-height and lift progress. For those who’ve done both: did the scan change anything practical for you, or was it just one more data point to overthink? If you have sources or personal comparisons, I’d like specifics.
Body-fat scale swings are making me question my progress
I did one DEXA at a local clinic: $95, booked 3 weeks out. My smart scale said 31% BF; DEXA said 27%. Day-to-day scale swings were 2–3 pts, so I stopped treating it as a number and only looked at 30-day averages. DEXA itself isn’t perfectly repeatable either — hydration, food, and recent training can shift it 1–2 pts. If you just want a baseline, one scan is fine; I wouldn’t pay for monthly. What’s your waist change per month? If that’s still dropping while lifts hold, I’d save the $100 and keep photos/waist. I track local DEXA prices and they’re usually $85–$150, occasionally $65 promos.
Smart scale BF% is basically a hydration random number generator. DEXA isn’t immune either—sodium, glycogen, recent training, and machine calibration can move it. I did one mainly to check lean mass trend, and it was only useful compared to a repeat on the same machine under similar conditions. If your waist and photos are trending while lifts hold or climb, that’s the recomp signal. I’d keep a weekly waist + 7-day weight average and ignore the BF%. What’s your waist trend per month, and are your main lifts stable or up? That tells you more than a one-off scan.
