I run a small cafe, so my hands are in food all day. A spoon of soup to check the salt, a broken corner of scone, a swipe of frosting off the spatula.
I never counted any of that as eating. Last week I got curious and kept a tally on my phone for five days, one tap each time. Twenty-three.
Most of them between the 7am bake and the lunch rush. One spoon of the tomato sop is roughly a tablespoon, which I did not enjoy learning.
The scale didn't do anything dramatic, and I'm not changing anything yet. What stuck with me was when the tastes happened — almost all of them standing up, hurried, and not actually hungry.
On the two days I ate real breakfast first, the tally dropped to three and then four. Anyone else who works around food keep a count like this, or is it better not to know the number?
