Three months in and I grabbed a small without thinking

Stopped by the feed store in town yesterday to grab a new flannel since my old one hangs off me like a tent now. I grabbed my usual large out of habit, then on a whim carried a small into the fitting room too. Zipped it. Actually zipped it, no tugging, no sucked-in breath. I just stood there in that little mirrored room and laughed at myself. Twelve weeks tomorrow, and honestly the scale number barely moves some weeks, but the sizes sneak up on you. My pharmacy tech noticed the change before I even said anything, which was sweet of her. Anyone else find clothes tell the story way before the scale does? I've bought the wrong size twice now and I'm not even mad about it.

That mirror laugh is the good part. I’ve been keeping a dumb little size log since January: 14 items, tops went XL→M, jeans 38→34, but jackets are still L because my shoulders didn’t get the memo. What brand was the flannel? Feed-store sizing swings so hard I’d add it to the list—Carhartt small and Wrangler small are not the same animal.

Night shift here. My tell was work pants, not shirts. Kept hitching them up till I looked like a toddler. I bought one cheap pair in the next size down as a test, not a whole wardrobe. Wore them a full 12 last week. No waistband digging at 4am. That beat the tag for me.

What are you doing with the big flannels? I’ve got a donate pile and a sleep-shirt pile. Still deciding which gets the good ones.

Same kind of thing happened to me at the Tractor Supply clearance rack—grabbed a medium Carhartt tee just for laughs, and it actually fit. I stood there like a goober and texted my sister. My old larges are in a feed sack for the church closet now, but I’m weirdly sentimental

love a fitting-room zipper win—that’s a real-life metric, not a scale number. My version is the cafe apron. I used to tie it in the back with a neat bow; now the strings wrap around twice or they droop into the buttercream. Gross, but useful data. I also put a strip of painter’s tape by the prep counter where I used to graze on croissant ends between orders. Seeing it makes me pivot to the dish pit instead. Did you try the small because the large felt silly, or

That flannel moment is lovely. One tracking habit that has helped me when clothing sizes feel inconsistent: I measure my waist at the navel every Sunday morning, before coffee, and keep a monthly average. It smooths out the noisy days and gives me a calmer trend to look at. Flannels also vary so much by cut, since some smalls are boxy and others slim. I am curious: when you zipped it, did the shoulders feel right too, or was it mainly the torso that had changed? Either way, congratulations on a real, tangible sign.

my dumb tell was a pair of $4 thrifted jeans I bought as “goal pants” in January and hung on the dorm closet door like a tiny denim threat. Tried them on after microwaving my usual lentil-chili sludge, mostly to avoid studying. Buttoned. Then did the real test: sat down in my awful desk chair and didn’t have to unbutton. I just stared at my sad little protein bowl like it had personally betrayed me. What’s your next non-scale goal—new belt, concert tee, or fitting into the lecture hall seats without the armrest negotiation?

night shift here. My tell wasn't clothes. It was my car seat. Always had it jammed all the way back. Last week I moved it two clicks forward and still had room. No clue when that happened. Just sat there grinning in the parking lot at 6am like an idiot.

This made me smile so big. I’m brand new here—only day five—and I’m already weirdly nervous about the first time something just fits. My current tiny tell is my wedding ring; it’s snug by afternoon and I keep checking it like it owes me an answer. Did you end up buying the small flannel, or did you stick with the large for now? I can’t decide if buying ahead would motivate me or make me anxious. Sorry if that’s a silly question—

Cafe owner here, so my uniform is an apron, not flannels. For ages I tied it high, kind of above my stomach, because that’s where it sat comfortably. Last week I tied it at my actual waist without thinking, and the strings wrapped all the way around to the front. I just stood behind the espresso machine grinning like a goof. The pastry case is still my daily boss fight, but that apron moment beat any scale number. Anyone else notice work gear changing before regular clothes do? I’m weirdly proud of an apron.
