Back at it, but my afternoons keep ending with a pounding head

I lost 40 lbs a few years ago, kept it off for about a year, then slowly regained 25. I restarted 5 weeks ago and I'm down 6 lbs, which I'm proud of, but wow my head has been hurting most afternoons this week. It's not every single day, but enough that I've been dimming my office lights and lying down after work. I know I'm not drinking enough water and I've been skipping lunch because I'm just not hungry, so I'm trying to actually eat something small and keep a water bottle on my desk. Not looking for a fix, just wondering if anyone else had this in the first month or two back on track. Did it ease up for you, or is this just my new normal for a while? I'm determined to stick with it, but dang, I forgot how much the adjustment phase can wipe me out.

Night shifter here. Afternoon headaches got me too when I restarted. Mine were partly caffeine timing and partly electrolytes. I was chugging plain water, peeing it out, still felt dry. Started tracking: headache time, last caffeine, last real food, hours slept. Pattern was obvious—caffeine at 3am, crash at 3pm. Now I stop caffeine earlier and sip water with an electrolyte packet across the shift, not all at once. Also check neck/shoulders. Dark office + screen = tension headache for me. Do you get them on days off too, or only after work?

Travel brain here too. My afternoon pounders turned out to be less about plain water and more about the combo: hotel coffee on an empty stomach, skipped lunch because meetings ran long, and airplane-cabin dry air. Now I fill a 32-oz bottle at the hotel gym/ice machine and actually finish it before noon, plus I keep a couple electrolyte packets in my carry-on for hot airport days. I also jot “water, salt, caffeine, lunch?” next to the headache in my notes app for a week. Do yours cluster on travel days or even at home? That pattern might tell you whether it’s hydration or the road-food chaos.

Afternoon headaches were my weirdest early side effect too. For me they tracked less with total water and more with electrolytes + caffeine timing. I started logging: wake time, ounces of water, salty foods, coffee times, first meal time, and headache 1–10 at 3pm. Pattern was obvious—days I skipped lunch or had coffee before food were worst. A 20oz water with a pinch of salt and lemon juice around 11am, plus a protein-heavy lunch, cut mine way down. Are you tracking sodium/potassium or just total water? And do the headaches line up with days you delay eating?

First, 6 lbs in 5 weeks is a solid comeback — don’t gloss over that. Something that helped me untangle my own afternoon headaches: I left a tiny note in my phone at 3 pm with headache level, what I ate for lunch, sleep hours, and whether I’d been outside. Mine clustered on days I skipped lunch or slept under 6 hours, not just low water. Might be worth tracking those two alongside your intake for a week. Are yours landing more on stressful days or after skipped meals?

Hey, I run a cafe and afternoon headaches were my nemesis during my first big loss. Mine ended up linked to the ‘open at 5, taste-test until noon, realize I haven’t eaten a real meal’ pattern. I started tracking two things in my notes app: when I actually ate lunch (not bites of scone) and headache severity. The headache days were almost always days I didn’t sit down for food before the lunch rush. Could your afternoons be a meal-timing thing? Maybe log when you last ate before the headache hits—that’s what cracked it for me.

Mine ended up being the no-lunch thing. I’d skip lunch, nibble kid leftovers, then nothing until dinner, and by 3pm my head was pounding. Now I keep a work snack drawer: turkey sticks, string cheese, roasted chickpeas, and a protein shake I can grab for car line. I eat a real mini-meal around 2:30 and it’s been way better. Are you actually getting lunch, or are you running on kid custs like I was?

One column I’d add to your symptom notes: time between meals and whether breakfast had protein. My afternoon headaches were partly a late-lunch thing—grazing all morning, then a carb-heavy 2pm meal. When I front-loaded protein and ate closer to noon, the 3pm pounders got way less frequent. Also swapped doomscrolling under fluorescent lights for a 10-minute walk outside. Weirdly effective. Are you eating later than usual lately, or skipping lunch when work gets busy? Track meal timing, sleep, and light/screen exposure for a week. Trend-line thinking helped me here too: one bad afternoon isn’t a trend, but a cluster in the notes is useful.

I’m a spreadsheet nerd anyway, so I added a headache column to my grocery/price tracker. Mine clustered 2–4pm on days I skipped lunch or only had a shake, and on long meeting days where I barely moved. A real 1:30pm lunch (Greek yogurt + nuts or a tuna pack) plus a 10-min walk outside, no phone, took me from 4/5 headache days to 1/7 over two weeks. Could be coincidence, but the pattern was consistent. Are yours worse on skip-lunch days, or more tied to screen/meeting marathons?

Road warrior here. My afternoon pounders turned out to be a neck + meal-timing combo: laptop propped on a hotel pillow, neck cranked like I’m watching a tarmac delay, plus “lunch” being three pretzels and a lounge coffee. I started doing two minutes of chin tucks and doorway pec stretches at the gate, and actually eating a real protein-ish lunch, and the 3 p.m. crash got way less dramatic. Are you tracking when you last ate

Hi all, I’m brand new here—week one—and this is my first reply, so please be gentle. I’ve had a similar afternoon thing, and mine seems tied to accidentally skipping lunch because my appetite is just gone. I started jotting down time, last meal, and screen hours in my notes app. Weird pattern: if I actually eat a small lunch with some protein and step away from my monitor for five minutes, my 3pm head is much less poundy. Could yours be more meal-timing or neck/posture related than you think? Not diagnosing, just comparing notes.

Hey, glad you’re back at it! One odd thing from my own notes: my afternoon pounders tracked way more with screens/vision than food. I was switching between readers and no glasses, squinting at spreadsheets, and by 3 p.m. my head was done. I started jotting “glasses? bright screen? jaw clenched? caffeine timing?” in my phone notes. The clenching one surprised me—caught myself doing it during insurance calls. Worth adding a couple of those lines to your notes? Do you notice it on heavy-screen days versus days you’re up and moving?

I track shipping like a hawk but apparently not my own water intake lol—hope the afternoons ease up.

Afternoon pounders suuuck. Mine eased when I actually ate a real lunch, but I still dim the lights like a vampire lol.

I’m a consultant, so hotels/airports are basically my office. My afternoon headaches got better when I stopped playing water catch-up and front-loaded it: 24oz before first coffee, another bottle by noon, then I refill at the airport fountain after security. Weirdly, the 2pm alarm labeled “water, not wine” does most of the work. Are you tracking ounces by lunch, or just realizing at 4pm that you’ve had one sad airport cup? That was my exact pattern.

Old-timer here—this exact thing came up in a thread last spring. My afternoon headaches weren’t hydation alone; I’d also cut my caffeine way down when I restarted because I was worried about extra calories. Two days of half-caff and they faded. Not saying that’s your deal, but it’s worth a quick look: did your coffee/tea routine change when you started back? Also, are you

Honestly, not a doc, just a fellow small-towner. One weird thing that helped me: I started noting the weather in my phone’s notes next to my afternoon energy. Turns out our crazy spring pressure swings line up with my headaches more than I thought. Our pharmacy crew has been joking that everyone’s head is off this week. Do your bad afternoons happen on rainy/stormy days, or is it pretty random? If it’s random, maybe try a 10-minute shade break outside? Sometimes fluorescent office lights + no fresh air clobber me.

Same here—kid chaos means my watr bottle is decorative till afternoon. Snack drawer cheese stick is my reset.

I’ve done the restart dance twice, and my afternoon headaches were usually caffeine timing plus not enough salt, not just water. I’d sip plain water all morning then crash around 2. An old thread here called it the “3pm slump club”—moving my coffee earlier and adding a salty snack with lunch helped me more than another bottle of water. Sharp question: has your sleep changed since you restarted? My first month I was waking at 4 a.m., and that alone gave me a daily vise. If you track anything, add sleep and first-meal time next to the headache
