India's generic semaglutide market is barely eight months old, and its largest player is already planning to export the playbook. Torrent Pharmaceuticals told investors on its October earnings call that it intends to launch semaglutide in Brazil within six to nine months.
What Happened
Torrent said it retained more than 90 percent share among generic semaglutide sellers in India after the March 2026 patent expiry. Nomura independently put Torrent's share of generic oral semaglutide at around 90 percent for July and August 2026.
Brazil is the first export target, and the same patent clock explains it: semaglutide protection there expired in March 2026.
India's launch was unusually coordinated. On and around 21 March 2026, Dr Reddy's, Sun Pharma, Zydus Lifesciences, Torrent, Alkem, Glenmark, Natco, Eris and USV all announced semaglutide products, in injectable pens, cartridges and — for a smaller number of firms — oral tablets. Torrent was among the few launching tablets first.
The market is more consolidated than the brand count suggests: Zydus supplies Lupin and Torrent, Natco supplies Eris, Dr Reddy's supplied Torrent and partnered with USV, and MSN supplies Torrent. Torrent sources from three separate manufacturers.
Who Is Affected
- Patients in lower-income markets, where generic entry is the main route to affordable GLP-1 access.
- Novo Nordisk, losing volume share market by market while defending price where patents still hold.
- Regulators and customs agencies, because every new legal supply chain creates paperwork counterfeiters can imitate.
- Research and compounding buyers, who encounter generic semaglutide material moving between jurisdictions with different approval status.
Timeline
- March 2026 — semaglutide patents expire in India and Brazil; nine Indian firms launch within days.
- July 2026 — Torrent voluntarily recalls select Semalix pen batches, adds an alternative supplier, expects its full range back by end-August.
- July–August 2026 — Nomura puts Torrent at roughly 90 percent of generic oral semaglutide share.
- October 2026 — Torrent confirms a Brazil launch target of six to nine months.
- 2026–2027 — Sun Pharma enters Brazil via Hypera; Lupin plans South Africa; Ajanta holds a Biocon licence covering 26 countries; Dr Reddy's Brazil launch is delayed.
What This Means for Researchers
Two things change when a molecule goes generic at scale. Price collapses, pulling patients out of gray channels into pharmacies — generally good for safety. And the number of legitimate manufacturers multiplies, making provenance harder to check: a vial labelled "semaglutide" can plausibly trace to a dozen licensed Indian producers, a Brazilian licensee, or a facility holding no authorisation at all.
The regulatory asymmetry matters too. A product fully approved in India and legally exportable is not thereby approved in the destination country. Assume approval status does not travel with the parcel.
How to Verify Your Peptides
Documentation is the only durable defence. Our guide to how testing works covers independent analytical verification, and identity, purity and fill weight explains the three measurements that constrain vial contents. Batch-level certificates matter more, not less, as the manufacturer pool widens.

Safe Alternatives
Where an approved product exists in your jurisdiction, it comes with batch release testing and a pharmacovigilance trail. Our vendor directory scores suppliers on documentation transparency, and our tools reflect approved schedules rather than gray-market routines.
