Hi from Sarah: glucose up while losing?

Hi everyone, I’m Sarah, 43, a school nurse in Ohio and mom to two teens. I’ve been tracking my fasting glucose since January — it was creeping up and I was tired of the all-or-nothing cycle with food. Down about 15 pounds too, and my clothes fit better. But my last fasting glucose came back a little higher than it was before, which freaked me out. Anyone else see that early on? I’m mostly here to learn, compare notes, and not obsess over every single number.

Welcome. Tracking the same waist numbers here, about 5 weeks behind your timeline, and fasting glucose on the last labs went 98→103. Following.

Could be sleep. My glucose is 7-8 pts higher after a 5h ngiht. You said you’re at 7h tho.

Not saying it’s this, but fasting glucose is one snapshot. A1c and post-meal checks told a different story for me.

How were you fasting? 12h vs 14h changed mine by 5 points. Hydration too.

The HDL drop and trigs drop together is interesting. When I lost 20 lb, my HDL dipped for a few months then came back up as my weight stabilized. My fasting glucose also rose during active loss, especially in a bigger deficit. I only had 3 data points, but A1c stayed flat. I added A1c, fasting insulin, and a 10-day CGM, and that told a cleaner story than one fasted draw. Not a doctor, just an n=1 guy. I’d also look at stress and training load as variables before I changed much.

Deficit size? Mine went up when I was eating 500 under and trainnig hard.

Same. My fastde glucose was higher the morning after heavy squats. Recovery load matters.

Wait, trigs went down and HDL went down? That happened to me on low fat. Added fat back and HDL recovered.

Low fat was my guess too. My HDL tanks when carbs are high and fats nuder 40g.

I’m not convinced fat intake is the whole story. Rapid weight loss can temporarily lower HDL. Mine dropped 6 pts then rebounded.

Caffeine is underrated. Four cups before a fasted draw spike smine.

What about sodium and water? I got a 104 fasted after a salty dinner and poor sleep. Retested at 96.

Retesting is smart. One fasted draw after a hard week is noisy. I’d track morning glucose at home for 2 weeks.

The waist drop is great. 40→36.5 in 12 weeks is fast. Maybe your body is just stressed from the pace.

This thread is useful. I’m 41 and started at 232. My 16-week cut had glucose go 101→107, then back to 99 after I held weight for a month. Trigs and HDL followed the same lag. So it may be the loss phase, not the direction. I’d keep the strength data and not panic over one lab. A maintenance phase gave my numbers time to settle.

Agreed — and the part people forget is that strength up, waist down, and trigs down all holding at once over 12 weeks is a genuinely solid stretch. Plenty of people get one of those and lose the others. Common surprise: week 12 isn't really the test, the maintenance week after it is — that's where things either hold or start drifting back. Worth a follow-up once that week's in the books.
