Hit the six-month mark this week and it sort of snuck up on me. I started in January mostly because the house got too quiet after our youngest moved out, and I needed something to do with my evenings besides grazing in the kitchen. First walk was 12 minutes around the block and I had to sit down after. Now I'm doing 40 minutes most mornings and I've mapped three routes I actually look forward to. Down from an 18 to a 14 in jeans — bought one thrift-store pair as a test and they buttoned. Cooking changed too; I make a big pot of soup every Sunday and eat it for lunches all week. Not every week is a win. Some weeks the scale doesn't budge and I get cranky about it. But the walks stick around no matter what. Anyone else find the habit locked in before the numbers did?
Six months in, down two sizes and up two walk routes
For what it's worth, The new walk routes thing is what I’m stealing. I started a little log after my youngest left too—not weight, just route, weather, and how I felt at the end. “Canal loop, gray sky, didn’t need to stop” is weirdly motivating. For the kitchen graze hours, I’ve been prepping a big pot of something on Sundays and freezing half in single portions. Then evenings are heat-and-eat instead of stand-and-nibble. How did you find route #2? I’ve got one loop I love and one I dread, and I’m trying to figure out if I should swap the dread one or just walk it in the opposite direction.
For what it's worth, Six months and two walk routes—I love that the walks multiplied like that. Something I didn't expect: the evenings were my grazing danger zone too, so I started plating dinner on a smaller plate and then immediately doing the dishes and wiping the counters. Sounds silly, but closing the kitchen "for business" killed most of my after-dinner wandering. Curious—are your routes actual loops, or do you plot them by where you'll stop for water or a bench? I'm weirdly attached to one route that ends at a mailbox I use as my halfway marker.
Night shift here. The habit anchor matters more than the route. I leave my shoes and a headlamp by the door. On work nights I do 20 minutes before shift. Off nights I do the longer loop. Tracking: paper calendar, one X per walk. No app, no streaks to obsess over. Seeing a row of Xs keeps me honest. Question: are your 40-minute mornings after work or before? That would change everything for me.
hi, brand-new here—week one, so please forgive the small question. I started a tiny note on my phone: just minutes walked and one word for how I felt after. No steps, no scale. It’s keeping me honest without making me weirdly competitive. I’m wondering, did you add the second route because the first got boring, or because you wanted more time? And what do you do on rainy or dark evenings? That’s the part I’m already nervous about. Thanks for sharing the six-month view—it helps.
two sizes and new routes is such a good trade. the evening graze window is my final boss too—i started keeping a whiteboard tally of soda-free nights and swapped the 9pm can for a lime seltzer in a glass with too much ice. weirdly the ritual does more than the flavor. tracking it like a daily quest made me actually care, even on the nights i just sit in the quiet and game. did your evening routine shift around month 4, or was it more gradual? trying to figure out if i should add a dmb little after-dinner thing or just protect the seltzer streak.
