My log says done, but my mouth has a separate budget

I keep a tab for intake, another for satiety scores, and a third for what I actually ate after 8pm. Last 14 days: planned calories averaged 1,860, logged post-dinner bites averaged 420. Not a binge, just a slow leak of pretzels and shredded cheese while I stand at the counter. The weird part: my appetite isn't roaring. It's more like my hand has a separate budget. I ran a trendline on the post-dinner line and it's flat, not climbing, which annoys me because I expected escalation. What's helping: pre-logging a second small snack and then waiting 20 minutes. It cuts maybe half the extras. I'm not claiming willpower is fixed. I just want the spreadsheet and the mouth to use the same forecast. Anyone else track the after-dinner leak separately, or do you lump it into the day and move on?

The “hand has its own budget” line got me. On the road, mine is hotel mini-fridges and airport pretzel stands. I started a “no standing snacks” rule: if I want it, it goes on a plate and I sit down. Half the time the urge dies during the 10-second plate hunt. Also I put the pretzel bag in the closet, not on the desk—out of sight helps my lizard brain. Is your leak tied to the counter specifically, or does it follow you to the hotel desk/nightstand too?

I’ve been maintaining a while and the 8pm counter creep was my last stubborn habit. What helped wasn’t more tracking — it was changing the default. I’d make one small plate of whatever I wanted (pretzels, a few cheese shreds), eat it sitting at the table, log it, then close the kitchen. If I wanted more, I had to sit back down and log before the first bite. Most nights I didn’t. Is your leak tied to the standing/cleanup transition, or to the salt-crunch combo? For me it was 100% the standing.

Your 420 isn't a satiety failure; it's likely cue-bound grazing. Same counter, same hour, same hand-to-mouth loop—hunger isn't required. I’d log the antecedent for a week instead: time kitchen closes, where you're standing, what you're doing. For me, a hard kitchen-close ritual—plate away, lights off, brush teeth, leave the room—beat any satiety score. Sharp follow-up: is the 420 clustered on later nights, or pretty flat regardless of sleep and dinner composition?
