Seven weeks in and the scale has basically stopped moving

Week 7 here. Started at 219, dropped to 203 by week 4, and since then I've been bouncing between 202 and 205 like it's a job. Same three pounds, same stupid little dance every morning. I know the first 16 lbs is nothing to shrug at, but this stall is messing with my head more than I expected it to.

The annoying part is I'm not doing anything differently. Still tracking everything, still getting around 110g of protein a day, still walking 3 miles on my lunch break. My jeans went from a 38 waist to a 34, so something is clearly happening, but the scale refuses to acknowledge it.

I've measured, I've taken the progress photos, I've done all the stuff people say to do. It's just hard to stay patient when you're staring at the same number for three weeks straight.

Anyone else hit a wall around this point and eventually come out the other side? Not fishing for a fix, mostly just want to know I'm not the only one white-knuckling it.

Tbh This is the part where trend lines earn their keep. What does your 7-day average look like now vs week 4? Not the daily ping-pong — the line. I hit a similar 3-lb holding pattern around week 6; daily was infuriating, but my 10-day average was still creeping down ~0.3 lb/wk. I also noticed my morning weight tracks my sodium/carb dinner from two nights before. If your weekly average is flat for 2-3 weeks, that's

Plateaus right after that first big drop seem really common—your body dumped a lot of water early, and now it’s just slower, noisier fat loss. What saved my sanity was switching to a 7-day average instead of reacting to each morning. I also did a 3-day food log weighing everything, and my “tiny” coffee creamer + handful of nuts habit was easily 300 extra calories. Not saying that’s you, but it was humbling. Are your clothes, rings, or energy changing at all? If yes, you’re probably losing inches while the scale throws a tantrum.

Honestly, Hi, I’m brand new here — literally day 3, so I’m reading these posts like a textbook and already nervous about stalls. Please ignore if this is obvious, but have you tried a tape measure or a pair of “goal jeans” instead of the daily scale? I started tracking my waist and upper arm because I know my weight bounces with salt and my cycle, and I’m hoping it keeps me sane when the scale does the same three-pound dance. Your first 16 lbs is honestly so encouraging to me. Do you notice your clothes fitting differently even during the 202–205 week?

Seven weeks is classic for the “whoosh then wall” phase—there was a long thread on this last spring. What helped me was switching from daily weights to weekly averages and adding waist/hip measurements every two weeks. The scale sat still for almost a month while my jeans got looser, which I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. Also worth checking: are you logging the same way you were in weeks 1–4? For me, early appetite suppression faded a bit and my portions crept up without me realizing. Are you comparing weekly averages or just watching the morning number?

ngl night shift here too. Scale stalls for me when sleep gets shredded. Weigh-in timing matters. Are you stepping on after work, before bed, after meals? That can hide a real trend. I stopped daily weigh-ins. Same day, same time, once a week. Plus waist tape. Also check sodium and carbs from night-shift meals. One salty meal and bad sleep can hold 3 lbs of water. Seven weeks is still early. Weight loss isn't linear. Clothes matter more than the bouncing number.

My scale and I are in a toxic situationship too. Dorm food got me: “same” meals weren’t same. The dining hall rotates, sauces/oil sneak in, and my portions drift without me noticing. I started taking a dumb photo of my tray and doing a lazy protein-first check—Greek yogurt, tuna packets, microwaved eggs, tofu from the stir-fry line. Also measure your waist or belt notch. I was flat for 10 days but my jeans got looser. Are you mostly eating dining-hall food or microwave dorm meals? That’s the hidden-calorie detective work.

Seven weeks is when I had to stop daily weigh-ins—our bathroom scale was basically a mood ring. I got a cheap tape measure at the drugstore and started checking my waist and hips every Sunday, plus one pic in the same jeans. Scale sat still for almost a month but I lost two belt notches. Are you tracking inches at all? That’s the only thing that kept me sane during the stupid three-pound shuffle.

The week 4–7 stall is so real. Mine was the kids’ leftover goldfish and finishing their mac and cheese so it wouldn’t go to waste. I started a snack drawer just for me: string cheese, turkey roll-ups, grapes, roasted chickpeas. If I’m gonna graze, it’s from there, not their plates. Also took waist pics because the scale stayed put but jeans got looser. Are you tracking the random bites/leftovers, or just actual meals? That was my blind spot.

First, 16 lbs in 7 weeks is a big deal—your body just did a lot. Around week 6–8 I had the same stupid 3-lb loop. What helped me was switching to weekly averages and a waist measurement. The scale stalled, but my jeans got looser. Are you tracking waist/hips or progress pics? Also, any new walking or weights? That can cause water retention and hide fat loss for a bit. Try comparing this week’s average to last week’s instead of today vs. yesterday. You’re not broken.

Week 7 stall club over here too. The scale did the same 202–205 salsa, but a $2 tape measure from the dollar store saved my sanity: waist and thigh once a week. Mine barely moved on the scale, but my jeans got less hostile and the dorm stairs stopped being a near-death experience. Random q: are you eating the same dining hall stuff most days? The sodium in my dorm’s “grilled chicken” is wild—one salty day and my weight is basically a water balloon. Not saying it’s not fat loss, just that the scale is a messy narrator.

tbh night shifter here. Are you weighing at the same point in your sleep/wake cycle? I weigh after my main sleep, before food. After a 12-hour shift, that number is garbage. Salt and water swing me 3 lbs easy. My week 5–8 “stall” traced back to grazing at 3am and not counting the bites. I started measuring my waist and taking one Sunday photo. Scale stayed flat, waist moved. That kept me sane. If you’re bouncing in a 3-lb range, check your work-week food pattern before changing anything big.

seven weeks is also when recomp can hide on the scale. Are you tracking a weekly average or just daily? I stalled around week 6—same 2–3 lb bounce—but my waist at navel dropped ~1.5" and my top set of squats went from 6 to 10 reps at the same weight. That told me way more than the morning number. If your lifts are climbing and measurements are moving, I'd ignore the scale for 2–3 weeks and keep protein/sleep locked. If both are flat too, then it's worth auditing portions and step count. Which one are you seeing?

Not dismissing the head game, but what are your non-scale metrics? I stalled weeks 5–8 at 203–205 too. Waist at navel was down 1.25

Not to be that person, but week 7 is prime time for the scale to go flat while your waist keeps shrinking. In the trials, plateaus show up even when fat loss is still happening; sodium, training soreness, hormones, and even slower digestion can hold water and mask it for a couple weeks. Concrete thing I’d do: measure your waist at the navel and take one side photo in the same light, then recheck in 10 days. If those move, the scale is just noisy. Are your jeans or waist measurements changing at all?

What does your weekly average say? I only trust a 7-day rolling median after a stall. Mine flatlined at 181.6 for 17 days around week 6–7, while the 28-day trend kept slipping down about 0.15 lb/day. Daily 202–205 can be water/sodium/glycogen. I’d log morning weight, then compare this week’s average to week 4’s average. If that delta is still negative, the stall is cosmetic. If it’s truly flat for 3 weeks, then it’s time to audit portions/NEAT, not panic.

Oh, I feel this. When mine froze for a couple weeks, the scale was useless but my belt notch and wedding ring told a different story. I started measuring my waist with a cheap sewing tape every Sunday morning, same spot, and taking a photo in the same old jeans. The number on the scale stayed ugly, but the tape lost an inch and a half. Also, a salty church potluck supper would bounce me up two pounds for a day or two. Are you tracking anything besides the scale—sleep, energy, how your clothes fit?

Stalls around wk 6–8 are often just tracking drift once appetite returns. Do a 3-day weighed-food audit—not recall—including oils, dressings, bites, sips, and weekend days. I found ~350 kcal/day of “same meals” creep that way. Also check bowel frequency and fluid: constipation can hold 1–3 lb of scale water. If intake is verifiably unchanged and digestion is normal, then it’s likely a true plateau and you adjust from data, not vibes. Have you compared a current weekday and weekend day to your week-3 log?

cafe owner here—the week 7 flatline got me too. What helped my head (not the scale) was measuring my waist and how my apron fit. I also had to face the “chef’s tax”: tasting bites while prepping. I started putting tastes on a saucer and counting them as a snack, which was humbling. Are you tracking anything besides the number? Sometimes the scale stalls while inches quietly move. Hang in there—16 down is no small thing.

oof, that 3-pound ping-pong is maddening. One thing that bit me around the same point: I swore I wasn’t doing anything different, but I’d stopped logging the “little stuff”—coffee creamer, a few crackers, tastes while cooking, the crust off my kid’s sandwich. Did a 3-day experiment where I just tracked every bite and condiment, no other changes, and it added up to 250–300 calories a day. Not saying that’s your deal, but it’s a sneaky one. Are you logging condiments and the handfuls, or just meals?

Not medical stuff, just scale nerdery from a crooked old farmhouse bathroom: is your scale always in the exact same spot on a hard floor? Mine was bouncing 2 lbs because I’d nudge it between grout lines, and dying batteries made it worse. I plop a 5-lb bag of flour on it now—if it doesn’t read 5.0, I don’t trust it. Are you using the same scale every time, or mixing home and the gym? I was doing that and chased my tail for two weeks. Once I stuck to one hard-floor spot with fresh batteries, the trend got way less dramatic.

first, 16 lbs in 7 weeks is a huge win — your body’s just cathing its breath. Around week 7 I had the same dance, and what helped was looking for “drifting” habits instead of the big stuff: coffee creamer, handfuls while cooking, olive oil eyeballed
