Consult fee jumped $49 to $99—is this normal now?

Booked a video consult at a medspa-linked telehealth clinic in Texas. In March intake was $49; this week they quoted $99 plus a $15 card fee. Same 8-minute slot, no labs, no follow-up included. They blamed platform maintenance. I started a little spreadsheet of 12 clinics across 4 states and fees range $39 to $129. For anyone else comparing lately, what state are you in, what was the consult fee, and did it bundle any labs or messaging? Trying to figure out if this is regional or just a summer hike.

In Colorado my last consult was $75, labs separate. Quest self-pay panel came to $118. No messaging included.

The Quest markup is the eral fee. My clinic uses Labcorp and self-pay was $89 for similar panel.

Insurance was a nonstarter for me too. That matches my spreadsheet. I track 9 clinics in FL, GA, and NC. Consult fees went from $59 average in January to $84 in June. Two added a $10-15 card or platform fee at booking. Labs were extra everywhere. One clinic said the fee covers “provider review” but the video was still under 10 minutes. I’d love to see your 12-clinic range by state. Are you counting memberships or just one-off consults? I’m also noting whether follow-up messages cost extra because that changes the math for me. The cheapest I’ve found was $39 in rural Georgia, but no labs included.

I’m in Ohio and haven’t seen above $79. Maybe metro areas differ? My clinic still waives consult if you do a membership.

Memberships scare me. One medspa quoted $199/mo that included “unlimited messaging” but no labs.

I’ve been calling clinics as a secret shopper for a small comparison post. In 6 states, the consult fee often hides the real cost: $49-$99 upfront, then $120-$180 labs, then a separate $25-45 “provider review” before anything moves. The only places that felt transparent were two cash-pay clinics that listed the full bundle on their site. Not saying that’s good or bad, just easier to compare. Does your spreadsheet separate lab markups from consult fees? I’ve been lumping them together and it gets messy fast, especially when one clinic bundles messaging and another charges per message.

Ohio here — mine went $59 in January to $89 in June, plus a new $12 "card processing" line that definitely wasn't there before, so you're not imagining it. The unexpected part for me was that the consult fee stopped being the number that mattered: I chased a $45 consult at another clinic in April, the handoff dragged 19 days before my first refill, and that gap was long enough that my 5x-a-week morning walk fell apart and the scale crept back about 4 lbs of mostly water and snack-creep. I ended up staying with the pricier one because $89 spread over a year is roughly $7 a month, which is way less than what switching cost me in lost momentum. Does your spreadsheet track the ongoing stuff too — check-ins, refill fees, whether a follow-up visit costs extra? That's where I saw the real spread: $0 at one place, $40 a month at another.

Fee's the wrong number to track, honestly — I've kept a running note in my phone since January with every charge that hits my card, and my all-in 90-day total went $487 in Q1 to $463 in Q2 even though my intake charge went up $30, because two refills landed in the same shipping window and I stopped paying a separate one. So when a clinic blames "platform maintenance" I just ask for the 90-day total in one email, and whoever can't produce that number is the one I cross off. The flip side: the thing I actually care about moved even slower than the fee did — waist down about 2.5 inches by week 11 while the scale sat flat for nine straight days and I came real close to quitting over a number that turned out to be water and hormones. If you're going to keep a spreadsheet, do the 90-day all-in column next to the consult fee, it changes which clinics look cheap.

Missouri, $75 in January to $115 quoted last week, so it's not a Texas thing — but the number I've actually stopped stressing over is the fee. The tracker that's been dead reliable for me is a pair of 36-waist jeans hanging on the back of my bedroom door; I try them on every Sunday before coffee, and there was a stretch around weeks 9 to 11 where they wouldn't budge even though the scale was ticking down, which nearly made me quit the whole thing. Turned out I was sleeping like garbage that month — five, six hours, dog waking me at 4 — and once I got back closer to seven and change, the jeans loosened up before the scale did. Costs nothing, no portal, no card fee, and it flagged something a $99 eight-minute slot was never going to ask me about.

Mine crept up too—why is the fee the only thing shrinking? 😅

That $15 card fee is the part that would annoy me. One thing I’ve started tracking is whether the consult fee is refundable or credited if you are not approved, and how often follow-ups are required. Two clinics I looked at were $79 upfront but included a 3-month follow-up; a $49 one charged again at 4 weeks. It made the cheaper quote more expensive by month two. Has anyone else been able to get the consult credited toward the first month?

I’m tracking a different column now: what the consult gets you after those 8 minutes. My last one was $79, then a portal message about refill/prior-auth stuff cost $20 and took three days. I’ve been walking after dinner and cooking more sheet-pan dinners wile I wait, but the admin fees are the real cardio. Is anyone else seeing a separate charge just to send a question or get paperwork pushed through? That’s what’s blowing up my little spreadsheet.

Small-town pharmacy angle: I asked my local pharmacist if these telehealth consults ever get billed to insurance as a regular office visit. She laughed and said most come through as self-pay, but a few will give you a coded receipt for HSA/FSA if you ask. That’s become my new tiebreaker—not just the fee, but whether they’ll hand over something I can submit. Has anyone actually gotten a consult fee reimbursed that way, or is it pretty much always out of pocket?

One column I’d add if you’re comparing: does that consult fee count as a credit toward the first month, or is it pure sunk cost? I started tracking that after a 2023 thread where a few people realized their $75 consult was credited only if they started within 48 hours—otherwise it vanished. Also worth noting whether they charge a separate portal/admin fee at refill time. The $99 upfront can look cheaper than a

Night shift here. I added a column for refunds. If they take $99 and then say no, is any of it coming back? Two clinics I called: one flat no, one refunds minus $

Mine jumped too—I just add it to my spreadsheet, shrug, and ask what’s included first.
