My BMI just crossed from obese to overweight

I have been logging my weight each morning and only comparing weekly averages, which kept me from overreacting to normal fluctuations. My average last week put my BMI at 29.8, down from 41.4 about thirteen months ago. For the first time in my adult life, the clinic summary says 'overweight' rather than an obesity class. I expected to feel excited, but mostly I feel quiet and a little unsteady, as if my mind has not updated its internal chart. I am trying to mark it gently: a slow walk after dinner, protein at breakfast, and an earlier bedtime. Has anyone else had the outside label change before the inside one caught up?

Classification is a lagging indicator. Your weekly average is the moving average; daily scale noise is just sensor jitter. I hit the same threshold and felt weirdly flat too. What made it click was adding a second dashboard: waist-to-height ratio, resting HR, and whether I can still do 10 pushups. BMI 29.8 is a milestone, not the objective function. What’s your next hard metric—waist under half your height, or a specific lift/carry benchmark?

damn, 41.4 to 29.8 is wild. that bmi label flip is such a weird mind game though — when mine crossed over i felt kinda nothing for a week, then randomly teared up putting on a hoodie that used to strangle me. one concrete thing that helped: i stopped keeping soda in the house and did a "gamer stash" instead — cold cans of flavored seltzer + those little water flavor packets, plus i only weigh after at least 6 hrs sleep. otherwise my weekly avg was garbage. did the excitement hit you later, or are you still waiting for it to feel real?

congrats, but I get why it might feel flat. I lost ~70, regained ~35, and when I first dipped into “overweight” I mostly felt exposed—like now I had something to lose. What helped was pairing my weekly average with one non-scale goal: I did a 5k walk without stopping. It didn’t make the fear vanish, but it gave me a win no BMI cutoff could take back. Do you have a non-scale thing from this year your old self couldn’t have done?

Congrats on the 29.8 — that’s a huge drop from 41.4. I hit that same line about a year ago and felt weirdly flat, too. What helped was giving it a week and then looking back at my monthly trend; the category change was real, but the daily graph barely moved. There was a thread here ages ago about “the milestone letdown” — several folks said the feeling catches up later, often when clothes or stairs change. Sharp question: what non-scale thing have you noticed lately that your BMI number doesn’t capture? For me it was tying shoes without holding my breath.

Congrats — the 29.8 vs 30.0 line is arbitrary but still hits different. I crossed it last spring: 38.6 to 29.7, and my clinic portal changed the label before I emotionally caught up. What helped me was adding waist-to-height (<0.5) and a monthly average, because BMI alone stalled for weeks while clothes kept changing. I also track grocery spend per gram of protein as a nerdy side metric — kept me from panic-buying “diet” stuff. Are you planning to keep pushing toward 24.9, or just defend this range for a while?
