Went from daily to every third day, and I'm puzzled

Not sure if this helps anyone, Since my youngest moved out in March, I've been rebuilding my days around things I actually like — a 30-minute walk after breakfast, real cooking instead of reheated leftovers, water bottle parked on the counter instead of in the car. Mostly it's been lovely. What I didn't expect was my bathroom rhythm going sideways, and now I'm weirdly fixated on it. I used to go like clockwork every morning, same time, no drama. Lately it's more like every third day, and by day three I'm mentally replaying every meal and wondering whether I should be patient or concerned. I added a pear most afternoons, more beans, kept up the walks, and things eased up a little. But I honestly can't tell where "this is just my new normal" ends and "maybe mention it at my next appointment" begins. For those of you further along in this journey, how often do you go now, and did the shift come with the new habits or on its own?

I wonder if the shift is more about timing than frequency. When my routine changed, I started noting a simple weekly average—how many days, and whether it was easy or effortful—rather than judging each day. That made the every-third-day pattern feel less alarming and more like a rhythm. A concrete thing I noticed: sipping warm water while I cooked, and taking my walk at the same time daily, kept things more predictable than the total fluid amount alone. Are you tracking mornings versus evenings? That might show whether this is a true change or just a relocation of your usual rhythm.

Bathroom rhythm is a lagging indicator. I’d audit total inputs, not vibes: water oz, fiber servings, steps, caffeine timing. When I “optimized” my days, I accidentally deleted all the incidental movement—parking farther, stairs, pacing on calls—and things slowed even though I added a formal walk. I track it in a note: water, veg, steps, and a 1–5 output score. Are you still hitting the same total water/fiber, or did the new routine just change when you consume it?

Tbh The water bottle on the counter vs. in the car jumped out at me. I did the same thing and realized my sipping dropped because I wasn’t in the car as much — I used to chug at stoplights, weirdly. Now I refill a 32oz bottle twice before dinner and mark it with a rubber band. When I switched to real cooking, my fiber swung hrd for a few weeks (more beans/veg, less takeout), and things went from daily to every other day before settling. Are you eating noticeably less volume now, or more? Just curious if it’s water, food, or the walk timing.

One weird thing that changed for me after my oldest moved out: I stopped eating the random leftovers I used to finish off their plates. That was probably a lot of extra bites and fruit/yogurt I wasn’t buying just for me. Now I keep a snack drawer with dried apricots, almonds, and applesauce pouches, and I notice when I skp my afternoon yogurt. Did your grocery list shrink when your youngest moved out? Sometimes my bathroom rhythm

Night shift here. My gut runs on sleep and meal timing, not “daily” anything. When I switched from reheated

Cafe owner here: my gut’s on its own opening shift schedule, so I feel you. Hope it settles soon!

late-hours gamer here. my soda swap messed with me more than i expected: went from one diet soda with lunch to a big seltzer, and the sheer bubble volume/timing changed my bathroom clock lol. started noting time + drink + whether i’d walked that morning in a notes app, and after a few days it was obvious. did yours shift to after the breakfast walk instead of the old window? that’s the part i’d be curious about.

The thing that got me wasn't food, it was the silence. When my two are at school, I suddenly have a quiet kitchen, and I realized I was barely chewing. I started keeping a snack drawer with portioned nuts and dried fruit, and I actually sit down for 10 minutes with a real mug. Not glamorous, but my body seems to like the calm more than the menu. Did your bathroom rhythm change around the same week as the walks, or did it lag by a bit?

Real cooking vs. reheated leftovers was the sneaky one for me. When I actually started making dinners instead of nibbling kid leftovers standing at the counter, my veggie/fiber intake went way up without me tracking it. My gut noticed within a week. I also keep a snack drawer with dates, almonds, and those prune pouches — if it’s not visible, it doesn’t happen in this house. Are you eating more vegetables now that you’re cooking properly? That might be the variable, not the every-third-day thing itself.

Night shift here. My gut only knows sleep and meal timing. Change either and it’s chaos.

Recomp brain says sleep and protein fix all, but my gut still mutinies when mornings change lol.

Solidarity—mine switched to economy shipping too lol

my soda swap did the same; gut went full side quest on me lol

I track my BMs in a notes app—just time and consistency, no drama. When my routine shifted, I noticed the type of food mattered more than the schedule. Real cooking meant more raw veggies and olive oil for me, versus reheated leftovers. That combo can slow things down. Did your fiber or fat intake change along with the cooking? Not asking for details, just wondering if that lines up with your every-third-day pattern.

I track weekly averages for fiber and meal timing, and that second one surprised me. When my first meal slid earlier by about an hour, my bathroom rhythm changed within a few days, even though my food was similar. It was consistency more than any single item. Are your meals still on the old family schedule, or have they drifted now that the house is calmer?

I’m a nerd about tracking, and the thing that surprised me was fluid timing, not fiber. Once my days changed, I was drinking most of my water in a two-hour window instead of sipping through the day. I started jotting times in my notes app—just water, meals, and bathroom trips—and the pattern finally made sense. It wasn’t dramatic, just a quiet shift. Did your every-third-day rhythm start around the same time as the after-breakfast walk, or did it lag by a week or two? Gentle curiosity, because bodies are weirdly specific.
