Hi everyone — 44, dental hygienist in Ohio, been lurking here for a while. Down about 25 pounds since March, and the scale has been parked since July. Trying not to spiral about it. Two teenagers, a husband who's on the road half the time, and a serious 3pm pretzel habit I'm not ready to discuss. I'm not a labs-and-spreadsheets person — I just want energy after work and to stop dodging the camera at family stuff. Anyone else sit at the same number for months and eventually see it move? What kept you going in the meantime — food tweaks, sleep, training, anything? Would love to hear it.
44F, plateau since July, saying hi
The ApoB drop in 8 weeks is impressive. Did your fiber go up a lot or was it mostly cutting late meals?
Mine did that. CRP went 3.1 to 4.6 after I added intervals, then back under 2 by week 14. Hard sessions can muddy the number.
The interval comment makes sense. Zone 2 alone shouldn't spike CRP much; new heavy lifting can. Were you sore when you drew?
The ApoB drop is the real win here. My ALT was also 31 and glucose 104; losing 8 lb moved mine to 92.
Sleep same but stress higher is the clue for me. My CRP tracks stress more than diet. Did you test after a bad week?
Not a doctor, but the timing of that draw matters a lot. My hs-CRP went 1.2 to 3.6 the week I added squats and deadlifts, then back to 1.4 when I retested five days after my last session instead of two. Hard lifting can keep it up that long. Was your draw a day or two after a heavy lower-body day?
Stress is the unglamorous culprit here. During a six-week wrk crunch mine went 0.9 to 2.9 with zero change in food or training, then slid back under 1.5 a month after it ended. Also, ApoB 112 to 83 in eight weeks is a big move, that's not noise, so I wouldn't let one inflammatory marker spook you. How's sleep actually going, hours and wake-ups?
Counterintuitive thing I learned: I tried to 'fix' a creeping CRP by adding more cardio and cutting food harder, and mine went 2.1 to 5.4 over about six weeks. More stress, fewer calories, same sleep. What actualy brought it down was doing less, three lifting days instead of five, one full rest day where I only walked, protein up around 140g, and defending 7.5 hours of sleep instead of 6.5. Six weeks later I was 1.8 and still losing, waist went 34 to 32.5. Eight weeks is also right when new training volume catches up with you if you ramped fast. Did you jump straight into the same lifting load or build it up?
Random one: any low-grade infection or inflammation going on outside the gym? I had a lingering cold plus some gum bleeding from a skipped cleaning, and my hs-CRP came back 3.9 wth everything else looking great. Dentist visit and a retest three weeks later, same lab, same fasted morning slot: 1.6. Worth ruling out the boring stuff before assuming it's all training.
Night shifter here. Plateaus are boring, not mysterious. Mine parked for 11 weeks. The scale was useless. Measuring my waist and taking one photo in the same jeans every Sunday kept me sane. What’s your sleep like after work? I was eating my feelings at 3pm because I was running on 4 hours. When my sleep got less trash, the pretzel urge dropped. Not magic. Just less tired. Are you tracking anything besides the scale? Inches don’t lie like water weight does.
Daily weigher here. What broke my July-style stall wasn’t a big fix — it was comparing this week’s average to last week’s average, not July 1 to today. At 44, my cycle started creating 10-day water ghosts, so a “flat” month often hid a slow downtrend. Are you comparing
Hey from a fellow Buckeye-ish small town. One thing that got me unstuck was tracking my protein anchor at 3pm instead of fighting the pretzel. I started keeping turkey roll-ups and a cheese stick in the office fridge, and if I still wanted the pretzel after, fine. Half the time I didn’t. Also took my measurements with a sewing tape once a month because the scale lied for 9 weeks while my scrubs got loose. Are you noticing any non-scale stuff changing, or is it just radio silence from the scale?
Plateaus after 25 lb often aren’t mysterious—maintenance needs drop as you get smaller, and NEAT tends to fall with it. What’s your step count now vs March? Mine quietly went from 8k to 5k. I broke a July-style stall by setting a non-negotiable 7.5k floor and two 15-minute resistance sessions weekly; scale barely moved for a month, but waist
You say you’re not a spreadsheet person, but “down 25 since March, parked since July” is already a trendline. Mildly contrarian take: I’d split July-now into husband-home vs husband-away weeks. Mine looked like a plateau until I did that; my away weeks averaged 1.1 lb higher because dinners got weird and my afternoon walk disappeared. The 3pm pretzel might be a symptom, not the villain. What does your weekly average do on the weeks he’s on the road versus home?
welcome! july plateau club over here too. the 3pm pretzel is just a side quest, no judgment lol
For what it's worth, hi from a cafe owner who is basically surrounded by butter and samples. The 3pm thing is so real. What helped me wasn’t willpower, it
July is the tell, not the plateau. Summer tends to move three variables at once — sleep, what's in the house, and how many actual steps you get. Hygiene work is a lot of standing still, which burns less than people assume. So: did your schedule shift in July, or is the scale flat while the waistband keeps moving? Those are two different problems with two different fixes.
The 3pm pretzel isn’t a character flaw; it’s a scheduled output. What’s the input at 2:45 — skipped lunch, back-to-back patients, no sit-down? Dental hygiene is basically chair-bound endurance sport. When I moved my actual lunch to 1 and did a 5-minute walk/stand reset at 2:45, the 3pm zombie stopped ordering the pretzel. Didn’t track calories, just tracked the trigger. Worth a one-week test? If the pretzel survives, at least you’ll know it’s the schedule, not willpower.
The scale is one sensor, and it’s noisy. If you’re flat since July, check a second output before changing inputs: waist at navel, and how one specific pair of jeans fits. I had a 9-week flat stretch where the tape moved 1.25 inches — body was recomposing, scale was just being dramatic. If both are flat, then it’s a real plateau and worth looking at the 2:45 block. If the jeans are looser, you’re not stuck, you’re just measuring the wrong variable. What do your jeans say?
Cafe owner here: my 3pm is a broken cookie from the sample tray, so I see your pretzel and raise you crumbs. 😅
Hey, fellow Ohioan. I work at a small-town pharmacy, and I swear July humidity is its own thing. My plateau trick wasn’t food—it was water. I put a hair tie around my half-gallon jug and slid it down each refill. By 3pm I could see if I was behind. Turns out I was way under most days because I wasn’t craving hot tea in the heat. How’s your water looking by mid-afternoon? Not trying to be the hydration police, just the only non-scale thing that changed for me.
Hi — brand-new here, week one, so take this with a grain of salt. I’m not a labs person either. One thing I’ve noticed in my own stalled stretches: sleep and stress move my weight before food does. Did anything shift around July — kids’ summer schedule, husband’s travel, work hours? When my sleep gets chopped up, my appetite and energy go sideways and the number just sits. Not advice, just wondering if that rings a bell for you. Also, I’m nervous to post, so hi.
Flat since July still beats March. Your 3pm pretzel is a datapoint, not a character flaw.
