new_vendor_ned Hey, Ned here. 41, I run a vending machine route — just bought a second truck, which is terrifying. Up at 4am, in and out of gas stations all day, which is how I got to 216 lb by January. Down to 197 now, nothing fancy, just stopped eating the merchandise and started walking the lots instead of sitting in the cab. Question for the vets: my SHBG came way down on my last draw and my total T barely moved — is that the weight loss, or quitting beer, or just how it goes? Never seen it explained anywhere that made sense to me. bunkhouse_beth Hi all. 52, I drive a school bus, so my day is 90 minutes of chaos, four hours off, 90 minutes of chaos. Started in March mostly because my knees were done and my doctor was tired of me. Was 212, now 179. I don't lift, I don't track anything, I walk the dog and I stopped eating on the bus. Sorry, no spreadsheet. tomc_29 29, night shift lab tech at a hospital. Third month. The weird part for me is the food noise going quiet — I used to plan my whole night around the cafeteria at 3am. Still tired all the time, but that might just be nights. Haven't told anyone at work, it's a small lab. kayleighthehygienist 34, dental hygienist, two kids under five. Honestly I just want to not be exhausted by 7pm. Six weeks in and I'm still exhausted, but 11 lb lighter, so I'll take it. My husband is doing it too, which makes dinner way easier. Not telling my mother. mortgage_mike_58 58, sell commercial insurance. Was 271 at my annual in January, the doctor said the word "prediabetic" and I heard my father's voice. 241 now. Golf twice a week, that's my exercise, don't come at me. Mostly here to read, but I'll post if anything weird happens. sunnyside_ren 26, PhD student, so: broke, sleeping badly, eating whatever's nearest. Two months in. Lost maybe 8 lb, but the bigger thing is I'm not ordering takeout at 11pm anymore, which is saving me actual money. Anyone doing this on a student budget? Tips welcome. h_martin_44 44, I sell houses, so my schedule is whatever the client wants. Started in April at 203, at 189 now. I lift twice a week with a trainer I can't really afford, and I think that's what's kept me from losing muscle. Zero labs, zero tracking, I go by how my jeans fit. doug_on_roofs 47, HVAC, on roofs and in crawlspaces all summer. Down 22 since February. My knees are happier and I'm not dying on ladders anymore. I mostly lurk. Hi.
Intro thread: who's actually in here?
Welcome. An 18 lb drop with waist 38→34 is huge. My SHBG fell 36→24 after losing 25 lb. Sleep and calories both mattered, but I never pinned down which.
Sleep is interesting. Did your carbs change too? Lower insulin can pull SHBG down, but the waist comment makes me think it's more than one variable.
I lost 30 lb and my SHBG went up, so weight loss alone doesn't explain it for everyone. I was low carb though, which might be the difference.
The ApoB and hs-CRP improvments are the real win here.
Agree with the inflammation point. What was your training like before week 1? Desk job to 3x lifting is a big shift for ALT and CRP.
I'm 41M and had a similar pattern. Lost 22 lb over five months, waist 40→35. Total T moved 580→595, but SHBG went 45→30. Fasting insulin went 9.1→5.4. My free T rose a lot on the calculator. The thing I noticed was that SHBG tracked my waist and fasting insulin more than scale weight. My sleep was also terrible at the start and got better around week 8, so that could be noise. Your ApoB drop is better than mine. I'd be curious if you have fasting insulin or thyroid labs from before, mostly because mine changed when I wasn't expecting it.
The waist point matters more than the scale. My SHBG only moved after I dropped two inches, not after the first 10 lb.
Baseline labs had it at 8.2, and the 16-week draw came back 5.1. SHBG slid 12 points across that same stretch.
What's your goal weight or body fat target? Sub-20% is a wide range.
Sub-20% is avgue but fine for an intro. Keeping squat and bench while dropping is the hard part.
I'm 36M, week 10, down 14 lb and waist 37→34.5. Total T 590→605, SHBG 39→31. Following the SHBG/waist link here.
