Maintaining 14 months now, and the hype cycles feel predictable

I hit my goal in early 2024 — 61 lbs down, from a snug 16 to a comfortable 8 — and I've stayed inside a 4 lb window since. Nothing dramatic. Same breakfast most days, a walk after dinner, lifting twice a week.

Every few months something new takes over my feed. Lately it's the growth-hormone thing people swear rebuilt their body overnight. I get the appeal. Three years ago I was that person, chasing whatever promised the fastest fix, and I'd always end up back where I started by spring.

What actually moved the needle for me was boring: habits I could still do on a bad week, and changing one thing at a time instead of five. Not saying anyone's experience is fake. Just noticing the pattern — big claims, same before/after lighting, quiet by the next season.

The routine that got me here is the routine keeping me here. I'd rather be uninteresting than starting over again.

Does the hype cycle run about six months for everyone, or is that just my algorithm?

Road warrior here, so maintenance looks less like a lab protocol and more like: hotel breakfast = Greek yogurt + the least sad fruit, airport backup = jerky + almonds + a protein shake if I can find one, and a 15-minute gate walk instead of the people-mover. I kep a note called “airport math” — steps, protein, sleep — because travel wrecks my routine faster than any hype cycle. The new miracle thing always sounds great until I ask whether it survives a 6 a.m. flight and a Tuesday hotel gym. OP, what’s your non-negotiable when travel throws the plan off?

Congrats on 14 months—that’s the unglamorous win. I do a similar thing: I track sleep, morning hunger (1–5), and how my jeans feel, not scale noise. When some new “rebuild your body overnight” thing pops up, I ask whether it would change any of those three in a measurable way. Usually it’s a no. I also keep a tiny note of the hype cycle and whether I tried it; seeing “did nothing” repeated

The hype cycles are wild. My filter is a “Tuesday test”: if a new thing can’t fit into a normal Tuesday — work, errands, 6pm dinner — it’s entertainment, not maintenance. What actually holds me is boring: Sunday grocery/protein prep, a 10-minute walk after lunch, Friday weigh-in, and one long hike a month. No overnight rebuilds, just defaults I can keep when life gets loud. Curious — what’s the one boring habit you’d protect first if your week went sideways?

I’m in the lost-and-regained club, so 14 months of boring consistency is honestly the most impressive part. The hype cycles used to get me every time. Now I keep a “receipts” note: same mirror photo, same leggings, once a month, plus one line about stairs or energy. If a new protocol can’t beat that over 90 days, I mute it. The growth-hormone thing is already fading in my feed. My real question: do you hae a plan for maintenance boredom? That’s where I keep slipping—not the weekends, just the flat, nothing-happening months.
