Fifty-eight pounds later, my mental image is still catching up

I’m down 58 lb over 41 weeks. Waist went from 44 in to 33 in. Shirts from 2XL to L. That part is data. The lag is cognitive: I still grab the 2XL, still turn sideways in narrow spaces, still assume chairs won’t fit. Food noise is lower but not silent, especially 8–10 p.m. Protein and lifting helped composition; loose lower-abdomen skin did not resolve. Weekly averages keep me from overreacting to daily fluctuations. Small win: crossed my legs at a work dinner without thinking. Frustration: photos still look wrong to me. Anyone else’s self-image running months behind the scale?

Congrats on 58—that’s huge, and the waist/shirt data is wild. I own a cafe, so my brain still thinks I’m the person who “cleans up” the day-old pastry at close. What helped me update the mirror a bit: I bought one L work shirt, wore it for a full shift even though it felt like a costume, and stopped keeping the 2XL apron in reach. The 8–10 p.m. window is still my danger zone—I portion yogurt and berries at 7:45, then flip the kitchen lights off so I can’t graze while “just tidying.” Question: does the lag hit you more when portioning food or in physical spaces like booths and chairs?

The size lag is so real. What helped me was a “reality drawer”: I kept one pair of old 44-waist jeans and tried them on every 4–6 weeks, not to judge, just to update the mental map. Monthly mirror photos in a fitted L tee did more for my head than the scale did. The first few times my brain still saw the old me; eventually the photo matched the trend line. For the 8–10 p.m. noise, mine was mostly habit, so I started a closing ritual—brush teeth, herbal tea, log weight early. Not magic, but it lowered the volume. How are you handling the chair/narrow-space flinch? That one took me the longest.

I do the same with chairs. One weird trick that helped my brain: I hung one old 2XL shirt in the closet and tried on a new L once a week for two minutes. Sounds dumb, but the mirror started overriding the old tape. For 8–10 p.m., my snack drawer is the MVP: Greek yogurt tubes, turkey sticks, popcorn bags, frozen grapes. I brush my teeth at 8:30 and set a 10-minute timer to fold laundry. If I’m still hungry after, it’s protein, not chips. Compression tanks help under real clothes, and I stopped expecting the skin to snap back. What’s your 8–10 p.m. trigger—habit, boredom, or actual hunger?

The weirdest lag for me was airplane seatbelts. I’d already be in a regular seat and still instinctively reach for the extender like, “just in case.” Hotel mirrors help, but only if I take the same dumb photo every trip in the same L tee. I also keep a decaf tea bag and a pre-portioned jerky stick for that 8–10 p.m. hotel/airport gap—mostly a ritual so my hands have a job. Does your brain lag harder in certain places, like rental cars or boarding?
