Small win: tall boots finally zip all the way

I had to tell somebody who gets it: after 18 weeks and 27 pounds down, I walked into our little farm store and tried on a pair of tall boots in my regular size 8—not wide calf—and they zipped all the way up. I actually sat on the bench and got a little teary. My calves used to measure 17.5 inches; today they’re 15.5. I’ve just been doing 20-minute walks after supper and picking up my refill at the local pharmacy every month. The insurance part is still a headache, but the pharmacy tech has been so kind and remembers my name. Anyway, I’m curious: what non-scale victory snuck up on you? A ring? A seatbelt? A bath towel? I wasn’t expecting boots to be mine.

I’m in maintenance now, and the boot zipper is such a good marker—calves seem to hold onto every bit of water and puffiness, so they can be slow to change. I keep an old pair of tall boots by the door as a low-tech check-in: if they zip without a fight, I know I’m steady; if they’re snug, it’s usually salty food or a long week, not a trend. I also measure mine first thing in the morning maybe once a month, same tape, and it’s wild how the number can lag behind the scale. What’s the 20-minute thing you’ve been doing? I’m always hunting for maintenance routines that don’t take over the evening.

Oh, I felt this in my chest—congrats! I had a similar moment at our co-op when my chore coat finally buttoned without looking like a sausage casing. One thing that helped me: I keep a cheap tailor’s tape in the truck and measure calves/upper arms once a month, same time of day, and jot it in my phone. The scale stalled for me for almost three weeks, but those little numbers kept dropping, which kept me sane. Are your new boots for actual barn chores or more of a town-and-dinner pair? Either way, wear ‘em proud!

i’ve been tracking calf measurements in the same spreadsheet as grocery prices, because of course. Standing, widest point, morning: 17.4 in at start, 15.6 now. My left is consistently 0.25 in ahead of my right, which I never noticed before. Did you stay in your regular 8 or end up sizing down? I’m stalking end-of-season tall boots and can’t decide whether to order 8 and 7.5 to compare, since returns are a pain. Also: do your calves measure different after a salty dinner? Mine swing 0.5 in overnight and it messes with my tracking.

Cafe owner here—this hit home. My calves were stubborn from 10-hour days on tile and too many “just one bite” pastry tastes. I started a 15-minute walk after close and measuring my calf every other Sunday, and it’s finally down 1.25 inches. Not as dramatic as yours, but I get the teary bench moment. Did the loss change how your knees and hips feel on long standing shifts, or mostly just the boots? Also, what style are they? I’m weirdly invested.

night shift here. My calves are the last thing to shrink. I measure with a fabric tape right after I wake up, before I’m on my feet. If I measure after a 12-hour shift, they’re easily half an inch bigger. Fluid shifts, not fat. So I only trust the morning number. Did you notice a time-of-day difference? Also, once the boots zip, the next issue is the shaft getting loose. I added cheap foam inserts to my old pair. Congrats. That zip sound is a real measurement.

Boot zipper is the real lower-body DEXA. My equivalent was ski boot buckles: same shell, went from second-to-last notch to middle. Calves seem like a lagging indicator—stubborn, then suddenly not. Did yours change gradually, or did the zipper just clear one day? Trying to decide whether to keep measuring weekly or stop overreacting to plateau weeks.

Tbh congrats, that’s such a real milestone. I have a pair of tall rain boots that became my litmus test. What surprised me was how much my calves changed with swelling, not just size—by evening they’d be about half an ich bigger. So I started trying boots on mid-morning after I’d been walking around, not right after sitting, and it gave me a better idea of fit. Also, shaft height matters as much as calf width: a shorter shaft that hit below my widest point zipped when a taller pair didn’t. Did you notice the zipper got easier gradually, or was there a sudden jump?

For what it's worth, hi, brand-new here (day 5), and this made me tear up a little too. Tall boots are such a specific joy. I’m not down anything yet, so I’m clinging to weird early signs: by late afternoon my socks don’t leave those deep rings around my calves anymore, and my ankles look less puffy. I took a photo next to a doorframe instead of using a tae because numbers make me nervous. Did you notice puffiness changing before the actual inches moved? Also, was 8 your regular shoe size the whole time, or did your feet change too? Sorry for all the questions—congrats, truly.

Good one. My hold-up was ankle/instep, not calf. Calf dropped, zip still snagged until I tried thin socks and zipped them sitting down. Also check the shaft circumference on the box—regular pairs vary a lot, like 14.5 vs 16. Did yours have an elastic panel? That panel does half the work. You earned that teary bench moment.

Such a specific milestone—love it. I track mine in a note: calf at widest, boot shaft height, and whether the zipper pull hangs straight. Mine plateaued at 16.75 for almost 5 weeks, then dropped 0.5 after I added short after-dinner walks. Did your 2 inches come off pretty evenly, or did you have a long stall first? I’m stalking a pair of tall rain boots but waiing for a fall restock/sale.
