Thinking in years while the kids eat macaroni

I’ve got a 7- and 10-year-old, and 6 p.m. is a small hurricane. Last month I stopped trying to overhaul dinner and made one pantry basket mine: cottage cheese cups, turkey sticks, frozen edamame, tuna pouches.

The kids still graze the carb-y stuff, but I can grab something fast before I become the leftover macaroni. I’m trying to picture this as a long-term setup, not a 12-week project.

Not perfect, but it survives Tuesday. What’s one default you keep in the kitchen when the evening goes sideways?
