Scale stuck 19 days but waist down 3 inches - normal?

Down 18 lb in 12 weeks, 172 now, 5'6. Waist went from 34 to 31 inches. But scale has not moved for 19 days. I'm eating 1500-1600 cal, 10k steps, lifting 3x/week, sleeping 7ish. Fasting glucose 92, A1c 5.3, TSH 1.8 from last month. Clothes fit better, gym numbers up. Is this the classic whoosh thing, or should I change something? Looking for people who stalled while measurements kept dropping. What did your next 2 weeks look like?

I stalled 23 days at 165. Then dropped 3.2 lb overnight after a salty weekend. Measurements were still moving. Don't panic yet.

Did you change training volume? New lifts can hold water/glycogen. My waist shrank during a squat PR phase while scale froze.

The training volume thing is real. I added two sessions per week and gained 2 lb scale weight for a month, but lost 1.5 inches off hips. If your lifts are going up, you're likely retaining fluid in muscle. I'd keep calories steady another 2 weeks and track waist plus weekly average weight. Also check if you changed carb intake or sodium. For me, a refeed didn't break the stall; time did. What finally helped was taking waist photos every Sunday and ignoring the daily number. My 4-week trend was still down 1.8 lb even though two weeks looked flat. Not saying that's universal, but it kept me from cutting more and feeling awful.

Wait, waist down 3 inches in 12 weeks? That's huge. I'd take that over scale movement any day.

👍 1

What are your weekly averages? Daily weights are noise. My 7-day average finaly moved after 18 days flat.

👍 1

Good point. I was down 1.8 lb just from a different weigh-in time. Consistency matters more than the number.

I had a 21-day flatline at 158. Fasting glucose and TSH were fine too. What broke it for me was a diet break at maintenance for 4 days, then back to deficit. Scale jumped 2 lb from carbs/water, then dropped 4 over the next week. Not magic, just glycogen and cortisol settling. If your measurements and gym numbers are up, I'd vote patience. If you're truly exhausted and cold, maybe reassess with a pro.

I vote water. My stall ended after a rest day and a big pasta dinner. Whoosh.

Did your sleep change? Bad sleep weeks always freeze my scale even in a deficit.

Sleep and srtess, yes. Also if you started creatine, that's water. But your waist is the better signal here.

Day 21 here. My waist is down 2 cm and my morning weight is a flat line. I keep telling myself the tape measure doesn't lie. Then I step on the scale anyway. Human.

Weekly averages saved me. I weigh daily, but only compare Sunday to Sunday. Last week looked stuck; the average was down 0.6 lb. Tiny, but real.

👍 2 ❤️ 2

Sleep is my tell. Two bad nights and I'm up 1.5 lb, puffy face, thirsty. I don't panic, just log it and drink water. It passes.

Scales are drama queens. Waist is the calm friend.

Took a 3-day break from tracking last month—just ate normally, didn't weigh anything. Scale bumped up a bit, then settled lower by day 6. Pretty sure it was just less stress and more carbs doing the work. Not magic, but it helped my head.

Started lifting heavier and my weight froze for 18 days. Shirts got looser. I stopped chasing the number and started chasing reps. Better mood.

👍 2

Different weigh-in time got me too. Morning, after bathroom, before coffee. Anything else is just curiosity. Consistency beats precision.

👍 1

If you're exhausted and cold, maybe eat at maintenance for a few days and see how you feel. I did that, slept better, and the scale moved after. Could be coincidence, but I'd do it again.

Gym numbers up plus 3 inches off the waist is the tell — that's almost certainly lifting holding water. I lift 3x too and my Monday morning weight runs 2-3 lb heavier than my Friday one, and a heavy leg day parks 4 lb on me for 3-4 days while my tape keeps sliding down. My own version of this was 24 days flat at 168 (waist 33 to 30.5), and what "broke" it wasn't a change at all — I started only comparing same-weekday morning weights, and it turned out to be a sawtooth that netted -3.1 lb over 6 weeks. The one thing I'd actually poke at is whether 1500-1600 is true 7 days a week; my stalls have always been weekends, not whooshes. Otherwise I'd leave it alone, you're recomping at a rate most people would kill for.

26 days flat for me around week 11 — 5'7, 174, waist 33 to 30.5 — and the dumb answer in my case was weekends. I finally logged a whole Saturday and Sunday honestly instead of estimating: 2,600 and 2,400 against a 1,550 weekday average, plus a Friday beer-and-chips habit I'd been mentally rounding to nothing. That's basically break-even for the week, which is exactly what a flat scale looks like. The weird part is that after I cleaned it up (one takeout meal instead of three, no Friday drinks) the scale sat there for another 11 days, then dropped 3.4 lb in four days right after a big pasta-and-bread dinner at a birthday party. So yeah, that masking phase can run way longer than the 7-10 days people promise. What I'd actually check: is your 1500-1600 weighed and logged or eyeballed, and are you taping the same spot at the same time of day?

👍 1 ❤️ 1

I was stuck 24 days at 166 and it turned out my weigh-in timing was the problem, not the deficit — I was comparing a Monday-after-a-clean-Sunday number to a random Thursday after takeout, and my daly weights were swinging 2-3 lb. Once I weighed daily and only looked at the 7-day average, it was still dropping about 0.4 lb/week the whole time, so changing anything would’ve been a mistake. Are you comparing the same time/day conditions, and what’s your weekly average done over those 19 days? If that average is truly flat, then I’d start looking at weekends, oil, bites, and restaurant meals before touching calories.

👍 4 ❤️ 1

The thing that bit me was weekends — Mon-Fri I'm religious about 1,550, then Friday night through Sunday averages 2,600 unlogged (restaurant oil, a couple beers, the handfuls I eat while cooking), which puts my real weekly average right at maintenance even though every weekday looks perfect. So my question back to you:

👍 2 ❤️ 1

19 days flat with the tape still moving is exactly where I lived in the spring — 5'4, went 168 to 161 over six weeks while the scale sat on 163 for 22 days, and the thing that changed it wasn't a cut, it was the opposite: I added ~200 cal back (extra protein at breakfast and an actual dinner instead of grazing) and dropped 3 lb in four days, which I'm convinced was mostly my body letting go of water it was gripping from training stress and too-big a deficit. The sneaky part for me was steps — I told myself "10k" but on lifting days I'd hit like 4k because I counted the gym as movement, so my true weekly average was closer to 8k, and once I just walked 20 min after lifting the stall broke. Your A1c and TSH look boring-in-a-good-way, gym numbers up, waist down 3 inches — that's not a stall, that's a recomposition wearing a disguise. Real question: has the tape moved at all in those 19 days, or is it flat too? That distinction would change what I'd do.

👍 4

I'm also 5'6" and had a 22-day flat stretch at 168 where my waist went from 33.5 to 31.75, and mine was not a whoosh — it was lifting water. I'd added a third gym day and creatine around week 8, and my scale literally did not move until I took a deload week; then it dopped 3 lb in four days. Not saying that's your exact situation, but with your gym numbers up and clothes looser, I'd bet on glycogen/repair water masking fat loss rather than needing to cut calories. Did you change creatine, pre-workout, or lifting volume in the last 3 weeks? That's the first thing I'd check before touching 1500-1600.

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Congrats on the 3 inches—that’s the real win. I had a similar freeze when my gym numbers were climbing: scale flat almost 3 weeks, but thighs and chest tape kept moving. What helped me was weighing only 3 mornings a week and comparing weekly averages, not day-to-day. I also measure at navel, widest hip, and upper arm, same time, before coffee. One thing I’d ask: are you weighing after hard lifting days? I can be up 2–3 lb of water after a heavy session, then it settles. Are your calories consistent on lifting vs rest days?

👍 11 ❤️ 2

This happened to me when I started lifting heavier: scale froze at 164 for 3 weeks, but my waist and thighs kept shrinking. My rings were tight on lift days, then loose by Thursday — water shifting into muscles. The thing that helped my brain was tracking a 7-day average and taking waist once a week, same time, before coffee. Also, how are your clothes fitting in the shoulders/arms? If gym numbers are up and waist is down, that’s a huge win. Are you eating more salt or carbs on lifting days? That can mask fat loss on the scale for a bit.

👍 4 ❤️ 2

late-hours gamer here. my weird one was diet soda + salty late-night snacks. i’d swap regular soda for zero, drink a ton during raids, wake up puffy, and the scale would sit flat for like 10 days while my belt got looser. once i logged sodium + when i stopped fluids at night, the ‘stall’ was just water timing. are you tracking late-night sodium/fluid or only cals? also weigh after your longest sleep block, not after a 5h raid night. the tape moving with gym numbers up is usually a good sign though.

👍 5 ❤️ 2

Three kids under six makes me the house garbage disposal — crusts, half bananas, cold mac and cheese. Loss stalled, so I logged every taste/spoon/sip for a week: 150–

👍 2 ❤️ 1

3 inches is the better signal. I’ve never found a real study on “whoosh,” mostly anecdotes, so I’d trust the tape + trends. Two tracking things: scale on the exact same hard-floor spot? Mine varies 1–2 lb tile vs rug. And compare a 7-day average, not daily. What’s your waist method—same spot, morning, normal exhale? Any ring/shoe fit changes?

👍 4

Travel-heavy here too. My scale sat at 163 for almost three weeks while my belt went in two notches. It finally moved after a boring low-sodium hotel week (grocery rotisserie chicken + bagged salad instead of airport/hotel food) and one full rest day. Those sodium bombs can hide 2–3 lb of water and flatten the trend. Quick q: are you measuring waist at the same spot and time? My narrowest point dropped before my navel did, which made the “waist down” number look even better. Clothes looser is the real scoreboard.

👍 5

For what it's worth, Empty-nester here too. What helped me at a plateau was switching from daily scale panic to a 14-day average, plus waist measured at the same spot—narrowest point, after exhale, before coffee. Navel vs. narrowest can differ by 1–2 inches, so it’s easy to accidentally compare apples to oranges. When I restarted lifting 3x/week, my scale sat for about 3 weeks while my waist and gym numbers improved; sore muscles can hold water. Have you compared your 14-day averages, or just the last few mornings?

👍 4 ❤️ 1

Systems nerd take: track a 7-day rolling median weight, not the daily number, and compare week-over-week. Mine stalled when lifting volume went up—glycogen/water can hold a few pounds and mask fat loss. Sharp question: is your waist measured at the same landmark—top of hip bone, morning, exhale, no sucking in? If yes, I’d change nothing for another 2 weeks and just watch gym numbers + tape

👍 6 ❤️ 2

Fellow broke student here. My scale pulled the same stunt when I started lifting 3x/wk on dining-hall food. Sodium + glycogen + muscle repair can hide fat loss for weeks. The tell for me was my lifts: if squat/row reps creep up while the tape shrinks, you’re probably recomposing, not stuck. Also measure waist same time, same spot, after exhale—not post-pasta. Cheap protein that keeps me sane: tuna packets, Greek yogurt, boiled eggs from the caf. Sharp question: is your waist still dropping weekly, or has that flattened too? That’d tell you whether it’s water noise or time to tweak intake.

👍 8 ❤️ 2

fellow cafe owner here—first, 3 inches off your waist is not nothing, that’s real. When my scale stalled, I discovered my “little tastes” at work (batter, frosting, a broken cookie, oat milk foam) were adding 200–300 cal/day I never logged. I started actually weighing those bites for 3 days, no judgment, just data. Scale moved again about a week later. Are you tracking weekends, or is that where the cafe nibbles sneak in? Hang in there.

👍 5 ❤️ 2

Maintainer here. The tape is the better story. When my scale stalled for about 3 weeks, I added a monthly average instead of weekly: weigh every morning, but only compare the 1st–7th of this month to that same week last month. Also started measuring waist at navel and narrowest point separately. That showed 2 inches lost while the scale sat still. I wouldn’t change much yet—19 days with inches down and strength up is a win. Sharp Q: are you eating back exercise calories, or is 1500–1600 your net? That’s often the hidden variable at a plateau.

👍 1

Waist down 3 inches with a flat scale usually points to recomp/fluid shift, not fat regain. One question: is that 3 inches total over 12 weeks, or still dropping during the 19-day stall? If waist is still trending down, I wouldn’t change anything yet. If it’s frozen too, audit the last two weeks for carb/sodium swings, creatine, GI transit, sleep debt, or cycle. Those can mask several pounds of water. I measure waist at the navel, fasted, after exhale, same tape tension. That trend plus gym numbers is more useful than the scale over a 3-week window.

👍 5

This sounds frustrating, but a 3-inch waist change is a meaningful signal that your body is still changing. One thing I would check: are your 10k steps truly daily, or an average that hides lower weekend movement? When I hit a long stall, my weekday steps were fine but Saturdays and Sundays dropped by half. I started tracking weekly step totals instead of just daily, and the gap became obvious. If weekends are lighter for you, adding a 20-minute walk on those days could be a gentle variable to test. Have you compared weekday versus weekend activity?

Hi, I’m brand new here (week one, so mostly lurking and nervous). Congrats on 3 inches—that sounds huge. One small tracking thing I’d ask: are you measuring at the same landmark every time, like navel vs narrowest point, and same time of day? I once measured an inch lower after a salty meal and scared myself. Also, are you comparing weekly averages instead of daily numbers? A flat 19 days with looser clothes would make me check whether your lifting loads/reps are still climbing, since that can make the scale look stuck even when measurements move. Wishing you luck!

Same thing happened to me—scale gosted me while my jeans kept getting looser. Hang in there!

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Hotel scale hates me too; my tape measure is the only one not jet-lagged.

👍 3

Something I track that helped me stop spiraling: I weigh daily but only look at the 10-day average, and I measure waist

👍 10 ❤️ 1

not a doc, just a chronic scale refresher. did the stall start around when you added creatine, bumped lifting volume, or changed sodium/carbs? i had a flat scale stretch after creatine + late-night salty snacks while my waist kept shrinking, then it dropped a couple lb over a few days. also, are you comparing same-time weigh-ins? i do post-bathroom, pre-coffee, same scale, and track a 7-day avg. daily numbers are a laggy ping in a bad lobby.

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Not medical advice, just tracking nerd stuff: when my scale stalled like that, it was because I’d switched to a new battery and hadn’t zeroed it on a hard floor. Also, my waist measurements were misleading until I marked the tape spot with a tiny dot. Are you measuring at the same point each time? And do you log a 7-day rolling average? That’s the only thing that showed progress during my 3-week flat spell.

👍 4 ❤️ 1

Same here—scale pouted for weeks while my jeans got loose. Trust the tape, hide the scale in the snack drawer. 😂

👍 6

Road-warrior here: my scale throws tantrums after travel. Hotel food sodium + plane dehydration + weird bathroom timing can hide fat loss for a week or two. I track only home morning weights, same spot, post-bathroom, and take a waist pic next to a hotel key card. Sharp question: did you add creatine or increase lifting volume lately? My scale flatlined for ~3 weeks when my lifts jumped, even with waist shrinking. Also, are you measuring at the exact same spot/tape tension? I once “lost” 1.5 inches just by measuring above vs below my belly button. If gym numbers are up, maybe compare weekly averages, not daily.

👍 7

cafe owner here, so I feel the tasting-bites trap. One concrete thing: when my scale stalled like that, my waist kept shrinking but I was having “just a spoonful” of soup/frosting/ganache several times a shift. I started logging those tastes on a sticky note for a week (not to shame myself, just data), and they added up to 150–250 cal most days. Are you tracking the cafe tastes, or only meals outside work? If waist, clothes, and gym numbers are all trending the right way, I’d keep the 19-day scale number as one data point and maybe compare your weekly average instead. But the hidden nibbles were the thing I’d check first.

👍 4

dude same, scale froze for weeks while my jeans got baggier, bodies are so weird lol

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Not the same numbers, but I had a 23-day flatline while my waist kept shrinking and my lifts went up. What helped me sanity-check it was switching to a 7-day average instead of daily weigh-ins: I was still trending down ~0.2–0.3 lb/week, just buried under water from extra lifting volume. Two things to look at: are you weighing after the same sleep/bathroom routine, and did you recently add reps or weight? New PRs can hold water/glycogen. Mine finally whooshed after a rest day and a normal-sodium dinner, not a calorie cut.

👍 7 ❤️ 2

Cafe life here too—my apron strings got looser while the scae sulked. You're good!

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Not medical advice, just my n=1: I’d double-check how you’re measuring waist and weight. Same morning, fasted, after bathroom, relaxed exhale, same landmark (navel vs narrowest). I switched spots once and “lost” 1.5 inches overnight. Also, are you comparing daily scale or weekly averages? Lifting 3–4x can mask fat loss via water/glycogen. If gym numbers are up and waist is down, I wouldn’t change anything for another 2 weeks—just keep protein and sleep locked. What does your weekly average scale look like?

👍 2

Waist > scale. Same here; lift numbers and fit moved before the number did.

👍 4 ❤️ 3

That 3-inch trend is the win I’d trust most. One thing I’d check: are you measuring waist at the same time of day, same spot, after a normal exhale? A salty dinner + evening measurement once added 1.5 inches for me. Also, with lifting 3x and gym numbers up, scale can be masked by muscle repair/glycogen water for a few weeks. Has your waist kept shrinking during this 19-day stall, or has it plateaued too? Gentle follow-up: how are sleep and stress trending? Those usually hit my scale before my tape.

👍 3

worth checking the timeline: did those 3 inches come off during the 19-day stall, or before it started? That distinction matters more than the scale number. In that old "stall thread" a bunch of us found measurements kept moving for 2-3 weeks after the scale froze, then the whoosh showed up. If your waist is still shrinking week to week, I wouldn't touch a thing — you're clearly losing fat, the scale just hasn't caught up. If the tape froze too, then I'd look at whether steps or lifting volume quietly slid. Which one is it for you?

👍 1

Quick clarify: was the 3 inches across the whole 12 weeks or during the 19-day stall? If it’s the former, the stall may just be a lull. If it’s the latter, that’s a lot—are you measuring the same spot/time (navel vs narrowest), morning, after exhale, same tape? Also, are you comparing daily weights or 7-day averages? Lifting can mask fat loss with scale water. If your 7-day average is truly flat for 3 weeks, I’d audit weekend intake/creep before changing anything.

👍 3 ❤️ 2

yo, late-night gamer/soda-swapper here. did the freeze start when you bumped lifting volume or after a salty late-night snack / diet soda swap? i had a 3-week scale stall while my waist dropped about 2in; heavy leg days + salty popcorn had me

not a doc, just a former scale-cursed gamer. did you move your scale or weigh on carpet/uneven tile? mine stalled 3 wks during a soda-swap phase, but waist kept shrinking. i tested with a 10 lb dumbbell: read 10.6. moved scale to bathroom hard floor, zeroed, same routine, next morning showed down 1.8. also measure waist at same spot after exhale, not sucked in lol. if lifts are up and waist down, i’d trust tape + progress pics before changing cals. what’s your scale setup?
