Sunday dinner for eleven: my plate math before I walk in

Big Italian side of the family, so Sunday dinners run 11–14 people and three courses minimum. I used to graze standing up and lose count by course two. Now I do a five-minute prep: skim the group text menu, pick my two must-haves (usually the braised chicken and whatever salad shows up), and rough out an estimate before I leave the house so I'm not doing arithmetic at the table with a plate in my hand. Last month I brought a veg tray and a tub of Greek yogurt dip — $7.40 at the store, and I ate that instead of the bread basket, which used to be my entire evening. Not a willpower flex, just removing the ambush. Do you pre-log before a big family meal, or eat first and estimate after?
