The pair I bought three winters ago and never wore

Cleaned out my closet this weekend and found a pair of jeans I bought three winters ago and never actually wore because they were the "goal" pair. Tried them on just for fun — they buttoned. Not loose, not perfect, but buttoned. I sat down on the bedroom floor in them and cried a little.

The big shift hasn't been one dramatic thing. It's been boring consistency: protein at breakfast (usually eggs or Greek yogurt), a 20-minute walk after dinner most nights, and logging my food even on days I'd rather not look at it. Last month I logged 26 out of 30 days. Not perfect, and I'm finally okay with that.

What I'm still wrestling with is weekends. Saturdays quietly undo a lot of my good weekdays, and I'm trying to find a rhythm that doesn't feel like punishment.

What's one small habit that snuck up on you and ended up mattering more than you expected?

God, the goal-jeans trap. We’ve had a few threads on this over the years, and the consensus is always: wear them now, not after. When my old “someday” jeans finally buttoned, I forced myself to wear them on the most boring errands—school pickup, pharmacy, gas station—just to get the sacred feeling out of them. Sitting on the floor crying is real, though. What are you going to do with them next: regular drawer or keep them as a checkpoint pair? I vote regular drawer, even if they’re snug.

Boring consistency for the win! The floor cry in goal jeans is such a mood 🥹

The boring part is the prt that works. I remember your old posts — glad those jeans finally got their day.

the floor cry is so real. My goal jeans are stuffed behind the snack drawer—maybe it’s time 😅

Buttoning is nice; sitting in them is the real endpoint. Congrats.

Sitting on the floor in them and crying — I've had that exact moment. Boring wins count.

The crying is the release valve. For me the boring shift was a Sunday morning waist measurement logged in a spreadsheet. No drama, just a line. The jeans became a lagging indicator, not a target. Also, sitting on the floor in them is a decent range-of-motion test. Did you keep them or donate them?

the boring stuff is so real. for me the shift was swapping my 2am soda for fizzy water + a zero-cal flavor drop, and making myself pour it in a glass so my greml

night shifts here. Jeans are a brutal judge. I use a cheap tape measure instead. Same spot, Sunday after sleep, before food. Log it in my phone. Waist or hip, that’s it. The scale swings 5 lbs based on salt and sleep. Tape doesn’t. My old gol shirt is now a sleep shirt. I kept one smaller pair in a bin, donated the rest. No shrine. Question: are you keeping those jeans as a checkpoint or getting rid of them? I’d keep one, not a graveyard.

The floor cry in goal jeans is such a beautiful milestone — so happy for you.

The boring middle is the actual flex. My trendline only respects the unsexy weeks.

congrats — sitting down in goal jeans without the button popping off is a legit NSV. My equivalent is a pair of thrift store Levi's currently acting as a poster hanger in my dorm because I refuse to admit they're aspirational. Dorm food hack that's helped me: I keep a cheap shaker bottle and mix plain Greek yogurt from the dining hall with a scoop of peanut butter powder — way cheaper per gram than protein powder and I don't need a blender. Not glamorous, but it's a boring 20g I can actually hit between classes. Curious — what's the most boring/unglamorous thing you think actually moved the needle? I need more of those.

I’m in week 9 of the same 2-pound bounce and the scale is being a jerk, so this made me tear up for you. One weird thing that helped me: I stopped saving clothes for “after.” I wore a too-tight-in-the-arms jacket to the pharmacy and just dealt with being a little sausage. It took the pressure off. Are you going to actually wear the jeans out somewhere boring this week? Even just school pickup or the grocery store? That might be the next win.

Ha, I did the exact same closet excavation in January and found a dress with tags still on from 2021. What finally worked for me was dropping the goal-item thing and just logging measurements every second Sunday — waist at the navel, same tape, morning, before coffee. Week to week it barely moves, but the six-month line is honestly ridiculous. One tip: sharpie the date on the tag of any "someday" piece so you know how long it's been sitting there. How far off is the pair from your everyday jeans — one size, two?

dude the sitting down in them is the real test, standing button is just the tutorial level. i had a similar pair of shorts from 2022 i used as a "someday" benchmark, tried them last month and they fit but only if i don't do a full 90-degree chair sit lol. for me the boring shift was swapping my 2am soda for flavored seltzer + lime and tracking it in a notes app just to keep the streak alive. felt stupid for a week, then it was just autopilot. are you gonna actually wear those jeans out now or keep them as the victory pair?

The boring part is just compounding interest. Congrats on finally cashing in the closet position.

The buttoned sit-down cry is the real PR. Boring recomp always wins.

My trenline called it: boring wins are the only ones that stick. So happy for you and those jeans 🥹

the jeans are a lagging indicator; they tell you what happened 6–12 weeks ago, not this week. What I track instead: waist at navel, weekly average weight, and whether I can climb stairs without breath-holding. Boring, but it separates signal from daily noise. Question: did you track anything during those three winters, or is this purely retrospective? If you have data, it might show which months were actually flat vs just felt flat.

The weirdest NSV for me was realizing I now sit down in jeans without unbuttoning them — I track a monthly “sit test,” same pair, same chair. In the trials, waist circumference tracks with visceral fat better than weight some weeks, so I log that too. Question: did the buttoning come with any change in how clothes feel after meals, or is it still just morning-only? That was my tell before the scale moved.

The floor cry got me 🥹 what's the boring habit that got you there?

Boring recomp wins again: protein, sleep, lifting, then one day the jeans just button. Happy for you.

The seated test is underrated. I log a binary: can I sit 30 min without the waistband digging? That changed before the scale did. If they button but aren’t comfy seated, it’s just data — not failure. Real question: are you going to put those jeans in the actual rotation now, or leave them as a trophy? I did the latter for months and it kept me in a “goal” mindset. Wearing them on a random Tuesday is the real milestone.
