Australia Approves Its First Oral GLP-1 Weight-Loss Tablet — and Nobody Can Buy One Yet

Australia's drug regulator has registered a once-daily semaglutide tablet for weight management — the first oral GLP-1 cleared for that purpose in the country. It is also, for now, unbuyable: no pharmacy date, no price, no public subsidy.

What Happened

On Tuesday the Therapeutic Goods Administration approved registration of an oral semaglutide tablet sold as Wegovy, made by Novo Nordisk. Until now, every GLP-1 weight-management medicine in Australia was a weekly injection.

The registration covers adults living with obesity and adults who need to reduce cardiovascular risk as part of treatment. It is prescription-only and was cleared in four tablet strengths. Approval is a milestone, not a launch: the TGA must still be satisfied on packaging and manufacturing quality before product reaches wholesalers, and no release date has been published.

No price has been set, and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme subsidises GLP-1 medicines only for type 2 diabetes — so a weight-management script would be private.

Who Is Affected

  • Patients who avoid needles. The oral option removes the main practical objection to GLP-1 therapy, so demand will likely outrun supply.
  • Prescribers and pharmacists. A doctor can write the script, but a pharmacist cannot dispense until manufacturing clearance and stock exist.
  • Buyers in the unregulated market. An approved-but-unavailable medicine invites counterfeit packaging, pre-order scams, and "oral GLP-1" listings no legitimate supply chain can fill.

Timeline

  • December 2025 — the US FDA approves an oral Wegovy tablet; the US launch follows in January 2026.
  • January 2026 — the TGA says it has not yet received an application to register the tablet.
  • July 2026 — the European Commission approves once-daily oral semaglutide for adults with obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition.
  • 3 November 2026 — the TGA registers the Australian tablet.
  • Not yet scheduled — manufacturing clearance, first pharmacy supply, pricing, any PBS decision. Eli Lilly's oral candidate orforglipron still awaits a TGA decision.

What This Means for Researchers

First, registration is not availability. Claims that an oral GLP-1 is "available in Australia" this month refer to a regulatory listing, not to product on a shelf.

Second, tablet strengths are numerically larger than the injection's, and that is not a potency signal. Semaglutide is absorbed less efficiently through the gut, so more drug is needed for comparable exposure. Comparing milligram figures across the two forms is meaningless.

Third, the tablet is not better tolerated. Clinicians reviewing the US launch reported more mild gastrointestinal effects with oral semaglutide, consistent with the pharmacology rather than a manufacturing flaw.

Nothing here changes retatrutide's status — unapproved in Australia and everywhere else — or the enforcement posture toward compounded semaglutide.

How to Verify Your Peptides

If a seller offers "Wegovy tablets" before Australian supply exists, that product is not the approved one. Start with how testing works, then read identity, purity and fill weight and HPLC vs LC-MS to judge which claims a lab report can support.

Safe Alternatives

The legitimate route is a prescription for an approved product — injectable semaglutide or tirzepatide today, the tablet once it ships. Our peptide library covers semaglutide and tirzepatide; every oral GLP-1 in development shows where the tablet sits against the field. Before buying from any supplier, check their vendor page for lab documentation and complaint history.
