Back to Moving After a Long Pause

Hi all — I’m a 47-year-old mom who works in grants administration, and the last few years have been mostly desk time and driving my two teens around. I started walking most mornings and doing a short dumbbell routine twice a week, not tracking much beyond whether I can get up off the floor without groaning. I’m here to learn from people who’ve kept some kind of routine going through busy seasons, because that’s the part I struggle with. Anyone else find the first month is more about scheduling than sweat?

Welcome. 41 here, and the timelines people post match up with my own logs. Resting HR went 75→66 by week six, but the scale only moved 4 lbs. Lipids took four months.

Resting HR is the first domino for me too.

Did sleep improve when RHR dropped? Mine got better before weight moved at all.

Sleep was the tell for me. RHR down 6 bpm, sleep score up, then weight followed about three weeks later. I also track morning HRV, waist at navel, and a 3-lift total. Weight is the noisiest number, so I only log it weekly. Your 8k steps plus 3x lifting is a solid base. I started with 6k steps and two lifts, then added the third session once my calves stopped screaming. Did you take waist at the start? That would make a better early progress marker than LDL, in my own tracking.

My LDL actually roes at first when I started lifting and eating more red meat. It settled by month four. Not saying that’s your case, just my n=1.

My LDL didn’t budge until I changed fat sources, not just training. RHR and weight moved first.

Not OP, but full body 3x week worked for me at 40. Squat, bench, row one day; deadlift, press, pull the next. RHR down 8 bpm in 10 weeks.

Are you measuring RHR same time every morning? Alcohol wrecks mine. Two drinks and I’m up 5-7 bpm the next day.

Alcohol is the hidden variable for me too. Even one late beer shows up as a 4 bpm bump.

Same—fat sources mattered more than total weight for my HDL. Walnuts and olive oil helped, but that’s just my experience.

This thread is why intro posts are useful. I’m 44, started at 228, now 214 after 10 weeks. RHR went 78→67, but LDL stayed 130 until I dropped late-night snacks. The odd part: HDL didn’t move until I added two easy Zone 2 sessions per week. My resting HR and waist moved in the first month; lipids were stubborn until month three. I also noticed alcohol and poor sleep blew up my morning RHR more than a hard workout did. Curious if anyone else saw HDL lag behind the scale.

Zone 2 seems to help HDL too, but it's a slow burn — like 12 weeks. The scale always moves way earlier.
