Three years in and I still can't keep one tracking system

I'm on my second real attempt at this and the thing that keeps tripping me up isn't hunger, it's paperwork. First round I went from 214 down to 166 over about 14 months and felt unstoppable. Then a rough winter, a new job, and 31 lbs crept back on. I restarted six weeks ago, same weekly routine as before, and I'm down 9 lbs and honestly pretty proud of that. But I've also built four different trackers in that time. A notes app list, a paper notebook, a spreadsheet I made at 1am, and a folder of screenshots on my phone. Every time someone shares their big organized system I copy it, use it for three days, then quit because it doesn't quite match how I actually eat. I don't think I need another system. I think I need one ugly boring one I'll still be using in March. Curious what single habit or tracker you've actually stuck with for months, and what made that one stick when the others didn't?

Not the paperwork ๐Ÿ˜ญ Iโ€™m a dorm rat and my first tracking system was a beautiful color-coded spreadsheet that lasted four days. Now I do โ€œminimum viable trackingโ€: Notes app, one line per meal, just protein estimate and a โœ… if it had a fruit/veg. Dorm hack: canned tuna/chickpeas/rotisserie chicken from the dining hall, Greek yogurt cups. Six weeks and 9 lbs is awesome. Sharp question: when you regained, was it the tracking that slipped, or did the system get too complicated for the new job? Iโ€™m asking because every time I try to log everything, I quit by Thursday. Curious what your old 14-month system looked like.

nine pounds in six weeks is no joke โ€” especially while restarting after a rough season. Thatโ€™s a real win.

One thing that helped me stop chasing the perfect tracker: I split โ€œtrackingโ€ into two jobs. Food gets a 10-second note in my phone (just protein + veg + whether I was actually hungry). Habits get a paper calendar on the fridge โ€” one dot for movement, one for sleep, no details. When I miss a day, I draw a dash, not a zero. Sounds silly, but it kept me from quitting over a blank week.

Curious โ€” when your system falls apart, is it the daily logging that gets old, or the moment you miss a few days and feel like youโ€™ve blown it?
