I’ve tracked daily weights in a spreadsheet since week one, and my 7-day average just crossed 187.4 — down 44.8 lbs from my start. The scale is noisy and dramatic; the trendline is boringly consistent. About 1.3 lbs/week for the first four months, then closer to 0.7 after I added two 30-minute walks and started weighing food again. Non-scale stuff: jeans went from 38 waist to 32, and I’m tightening my belt past the old hole. Mildly contrarian take: the daily weigh-in keeps me honest, it doesn’t mess with my head. Anyone else trust their 7-day average more than the “official” weekly number?
My trendline finally stopped looking like a ski slope
Nice. The 1.3→0.7 shift after adding two 30-min walks and re-weighing food is probably less about the walks' calorie burn and more about portion accuracy plus reduced random variation. Two walks = maybe 150–200 kcal/day, which wouldn't explain a 0.6 lb/wk drop by itself.
If you want a smoother signal, try a 14-day EWMA instead of 7-day. It lags more but filters glycogen/water noise. Also track waist at navel weekly. If waist keeps dropping while weight flattens, that's recomp/water masking, not a stall.
Question: are you weighing food on weekends too, or just weekdays? Weekend sodium/carb shifts can make Monday's 7-day average look like a betrayal.
That 7-day average crossing 187.4 is such a satisfying marker. I keep a similar tab: daily weights + 7-day average, plus a column for “whooshes”—higher-sodium or sore-muscle days where the scale jumps, then drops. When I added walks, my trendline flattened for about two weeks before resuming; I think my body held some water from the new activity. Did your non-scale wins include measurements or how clothes fit? I’m curious if those kept moving during the 0.7 stretch.
Nice work—the 7-day average is the only thing that keeps me sane. Question: did the slowdown to 0.7 lb/wk start before or after you added the walks? When I added daily walks, my trendline flattened for about two weeks, then dropped; I assumed water retention/repair. I also log a 7-day median alongside the mean, because one salty meal can drag the mean up. What formula are you using—simple rolling average or an EMA? And do you backfill missed weigh-ins or leave gaps?
late-night gamer here. the thing that finally helped my trendline was killing the “one more match” soda habit — i was basically drinking 300-400 cals between 11pm and 2am without noticing. swapped to cold sparkling water with a zero-sugar flavor packet and started pre-portioning frozen grapes for the queue. trendline got less jagged because my sodium/liquid swings calmed down too. sharp q: when you added the two 30-min walks, did you stack them after meals or just whenever? trying to decide if timing matters or if it’s just total steps.
