Six weeks in and my weekly average finally moved again

I wanted to share something small in case it helps anyone sitting in the same flat stretch I was in last month.

For four weeks my weekly averages barely budged — 0.1 to 0.2 pounds up or down, nothing that felt like progress. I had not changed much: protein at breakfast, a walk after dinner most evenings, water bottle refilled on my desk. My jeans were looser at the waist, though, and my ring slipped around more easily, so I decided to keep going rather than overhaul everything out of frustration.

This week my average dropped 1.4 pounds, and my four-week trend line is down 6.8 pounds since I started in early spring. My routine is identical. The scale simply caught up with what my body had apparently been doing all along.

I am not a patient person by nature, so this has been a quiet lesson. I now write down weekly averages instead of daily weights, and I take measurements on the first of each month. It keeps me far calmer.

Has anyone else had a long flat stretch followed by a sudden drop? I would genuinely like to hear how you stayed steady through yours.

man the flat stretches are so weird. during my last one the weekly avg sat at like 0.1 for almost a month. what actually moved it wasnt anything huge — i stopped eating salty stuff during late gaming sessions. i used to do chips + diet soda at like 1am, then wonder why the scale was up 2 lbs. swapped to sparkling water and frozen grapes, and my weekly avg started creeping down again. also started weighing at the same time after bathroom before coffee, not after a 4-hour ranked session lol. did your jeans fit any different during those flat weeks? bc mine got looser before the number moved, which messed with my head.

Congrats on the drop — those flat weeks are so mentally loud for such tiny numbers. Now that it’s just my husband and me at dinner, I stopped eyeballing the olive oil and actually measured it for the pan. I was easily adding an extra 100–150 calories without realizing it. Once I saw that,

the thing that broke my last flat stretch was logging my late-night snacks instead of just dinner. i game til like 1-2am and kept thinking i was “not eating much,” but the handfuls of pretzels plus my soda-swap experiments were adding up. started pre-pouring a bowl and keeping zero-sugar root beer in the fridge, and my weekly avg finally ticked down a little. not magic, just found my blind spot. did yours end up being late-night stuff too, or more like sodium/water swings?

Hot take: weekly averages are the noisiest useful window. I switched to a 7-day rolling mean plus a 21-day slope in my sheet, and during my last flat stretch the weekly number sat at 184.2–184.4 for 11 days while the 21-day slope was still -0.08 lb/day. Tape said waist down 0.5 in, so the scale was lying by omission. Are you using calendar weeks or a rolling 7? And do you weigh at the same time/fasted? Fixing that cut my day-to-day noise by about half, which made the actual trend way easier to trust.

I’ve been here since 2021 and these stalls still mess with me. Switching from weekly averages to a 10-day rolling trend helped, plus a monthly waist measurement. Mine sat at 184 for almost a month once, then dropped 2 lbs in five days. Out of curiosity—did anything differ in the week it finally moved, like sleep, sodium, or step count? I can usually spot my trigger only in hindsight.

Dorm dining halls are a masterclass in hidden calories — the pasta bar ladle and I have a toxic relationship. What finally cracked my own flat stretch was weighing the rice and peanut butter I actually took for three days; my “small” scoop was basically a casserole. Also kept cheap protein in my mini fridge (tuna packets, Greek yogurt, frozen edamame) so I wasn’t just guessing at dinner. Nothing dramatic, just less mystery. Did yours break from a portion reality check, or was it mostly patience/time?

The thing that surprised me in my own flat stretch was that the scale was stuck while my belt notch moved. I'd been measuring my waist at the navel every Sunday before coffee, and it went down half an inch while the weekly average just wobbled. Now when the scale stalls I check that first instead of panicking. Curious — did yours break all at once, like a whoosh over two or three days, or was it a slow creep upward in the numbers? Mine was a sudden 1.8 lb drop after about three and a half flat weeks, which made those weeks feel a lot less scary in hindsight.

Not sure if this is your thing, but I added a monthly waist measurement at the navel and a note about where I am in my cycle. My last flat month, the scale was boring but my waist was down 0.5 inch. Now I only get curious if both the 14-day trend and the tape measure stall. I still weigh daily, but I compare same-phase weeks instead of week-to-week, and it’s way less whiplash. Congrats on the move—those tiny averages really do add up.
