Held still in 34-degree wind for the 12-week comparison shot

For what it's worth, Same jacket, same lamppost, same time of day — reproducibility matters when your only measurement instrument is a phone camera. Twelve weeks in, down 21 pounds and one belt notch, but the visible delta is mostly in my face and how the jacket collar sits. My wife says the photo isn't scientific. She's right: the light changed and I was shivering, so my shoulders are up around my ears like I'm being interrogated.

Still, the data's the data. I weigh daily, measure waist weekly, take photos monthly. The tape measure is more honest than the mirror, and way more honest than my mood at 6 a.m.

Small win: no 3 p.m. snack for the first time all week. That's a system change, not willpower — I moved protein earlier and killed the crash.

Anyone else find side-by-side photos kind of useless until you control the variables, or is that just me optimizing the fun out of it?

Nice controlled setup. One thing that helped me: painter's tape a cross on the ground for your feet, and lock exposure/WB by pressing-and-holding on the lamppost before each shot. Also take a side profile at navel level — my front shots barely moved while the belt notch did. In the trials I’ve read, waist circumference tracks changes better than scale alone, but hydration/glycogen can swing pounds week to week. Did you measure neck or upper-arm? Collar fit sounds like a real proxy, honestly.

Reproducibility nerd take: your phone is the wildcard. Auto exposure/white balance will chase that 34-degree light, so your face can look hollow or puffy regardless of fat. Lock exposure/focus,

Braving 34-degree wind for a progress pic is dedication. I do mine in the hall by the pantry: feet on blue painter’s tape, phone propped on the same cookbook, pencil mark on the wall for camera height. Light still fibs, especially late afternoon. My local pharmacy scale and home scale disagree by a pound, so I stopped chasing decimals; the insurance app only wants a monthly number anyway. The oddest change for me was rings before pants. Sharp follow-up: did the belt notch or the collar feel like the bigger tell? Congrats on 21 down—keep that same lamppost!
