My husband tried my bathroom scale this morning

I keep a small paper log beside the mirror and only pay attention to the weekly average. This morning my husband stepped on the scale before I did, which he almost never does.

He looked at the number, then at me, and asked whether the floor in our house had gone uneven. I laughed, but I also recognized the old reflex: one reading becoming a verdict.

We talked for a few minutes. I told him what has helped me stay calm: same time of day, same spot on the floor, and a rolling seven-day average so a salty dinner or a hard workout does not get to narrate the whole week.

He is not on this journey in the same way I am, and I do not want our bathroom to become a scoreboard. Still, I was surprised by how tender I felt watching him care about the number.

For those of you with partners at home, how do you keep weigh-ins from becoming a shared mood? I would like our scale to stay a tool, not a little judge.
