Down 18 lbs, scale stuck 16 days, waist still shrinking?

I'm 12 weeks in, down from 214 to 196. For the last 16 days my scale has sat between 196.0 and 196.8. Same food, about 1800 cal, lifting 3x week, steps 7k-9k. Waist is down another half inch though, and my fasting glucose went from 104 to 96. Resting HR 72 to 64. I'm not panicking, just curious: is this the classic whoosh setup, or am I actually maintaining at this intake? Anyone tracked a long flat stretch while measurements kept moving? What broke yours?

Waist down and glucose down is a better trend than scale.

Waist down is the tell. I had a 19-day flat at 205, then dropped 2.8 lbs after a high-sodium weekend. Water shifts are weird.

Not necessarily. If you'd been dieting hard, a refeed can release water retention. I saw it after a big pasta dinner, down 3 lbs by Tuesday.

The 16 days at basically one number is what gets me. Have you compared weekly averages or daily?

Weekly averages saved my sanity. Daily weigh-ins are noise unless you're tracking a full menstrual cycle too.

Fasting glucose 104 to 96 is a big shift. Are you eating the same carbs or just same calories?

Same calories here, different carbs. I moved rice to dinner and morning glucose dropped 8 points, scale didn't care.

I'd bet the lifting is masking fat loss. Muscle glycogen and repair water can hold several pounds.

That was my experience too. Scale flat for 3 weeks, then pants got loose before scale moved.

Honestly, I had almost the same numbers at 5 ft 7, 218 to 199 over 14 weeks, then 18 days at 199. Waist dropped 1.25 inches in that flat stretch, which was the only thing moving. What finally moved the scale was not a big change, just tightening my logging on weekends and adding one 45-minute walk. I don't think you're maintaining, because glucose and resting HR don't usually improve like that if nothing i shappening. I kept the weekly averages and compared a full 28-day trend before changing anything.

16 days is barely a stall. My last flat stretch was 19 days, then dropped 2.4 lbs after a random high-step Saturday.

Waist down another half inch is the real win. Scale sat still for me 3 weeks while I lost a belt notch.

Sleep is my hidden variable. 5-hour nights flatlined me for 12 days; 8-hour nights gave a 2 lb drop.

Twelve weeks, 1800 cal, lifting 3x: I wouldn’t call that maintenance yet. At 7k-9k steps you’re probably still in a deficit; 16 days can just be water/glycogen masking fat loss. My last plateau went 21 days, waist down 1.25 inches, then scale dropped 3.1 lbs in 48 hours. I’d keep intake steady another two weeks, maybe check weekend sodium/alcohol, and trust the tape.

My scale used to sit flat Sunday through Thursday and whoosh Friday/Saturday. I finally tracked it: my weekend was 600-800 extra calories and a bottle of wine, which erased a 350/day deficit. Once I kept Saturday normal-ish, an 18-day flat broke and dropped 4 lbs in 8 days. Not saying that's you, but weekends are sneaky.

The trap for me was 'same food' drift. I was adamant I ate 1800, then logged five straight days with a scale and found 1950-2050—olive oil, a handful of nuts, creamer, bites off my kid's plate. I didn't slash anything dramatic, just measured oil and actually counted the nuts. Ten days later I was down 3 lbs after a 19-day flat. The weird part? My waist had already dropped 0.75 inch during the stall, so I think I was losing fat but the scale was masked by water and food volume. Tracking tighter didn't create a bigger deficit, it just made the one I thought I had real.

22-day fat-loss plateau broke the day after a rest week, not a diet tweak — sleep and a deload did it, not the food.

Clothes don't lie. My scale sat still three weeks while jeans went from tight 34 to loose 34.

I lost 3 weeks to a plateau because I didn't realize my weekend sodium was wrecking my Monday weigh-ins. Same 1800 weekdays, but Saturday sushi and Sunday brunch had me holding water till Wednesday. Weighing daily and averaging weekly showed it clearly. Any chance your Friday-to-Monday pattern is doing that?

👍 1

The unexpected one for me: I started weighing first thing after bathroom, before coffee, same underwear, and it still tok 11 days to move after a 19-day stall. What broke it wasn't diet changes, it was sleep. I went from 5.5 to 7.5 hours for a week and dropped 2.4 lbs. Your resting HR and glucose improving makes me think you're recomposing, not maintaining. 1800 at your size with lifting and that step count is probably still a deficit. I'd track neck and bicep too, my waist lagged my scale by about two weeks the whole way down.

👍 3

Weekends are my silent killer. Friday and Saturday I'm probably 600-900 over, and it takes me until Tuesday to flush the water. I started weighing Sunday morning too, not just weekdays, and the pattern jumped right out.

👍 1

Your HR dropping that much means something's working underneath the noise.

👍 1

Check a pair of jeans you haven’t worn in a month, not the scale.

My 19-day stall broke after two high-sodium days and a gallon of water. Counteintuitive but real.

That waist/glucose/HR combo is the good kind of weird. One thing I track now besides the scale: a 7-day rolling average, plus a “lift-day vs rest-day” weigh-in. When I added 3x/week strength, my scale flatlined for almost 3 weeks while my average eventually stepped down. Daily highs were just higher after lifting days. Are you comparing weekly averages instead of daily numbers? Also, my rings get loose before the scale moves—random but oddly reliable. You’re not imagining progress.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Scale is a lagging indicator; 16 days inside 0.8 lb is basically sensor noise. I’d log daily but only make decisions off a 7-day median and same-day-of-week comparison. If you recently changed lifting volume or tempo, expect extra water retention for 1–3 weeks even while fat loss continues. Sharp question: are you measuring waist at the same time, same spot, after exhale? A half inch could be real, or tape drift. Trend + waist + recovery is the better dashboard than the daily number.

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Not the jeans check, but: did your lifting volume creep up during this stall? Every time I add a set of squats or bump my deadlift, my scale parks for 2–3 weeks while my body holds water for repair. I started logging total weekly sets plus sleep, and the whoosh usually hits after a deload or two easy days. What’s your weekly volume looked like since the scale froze? If it’s up, that might be your answer, not a real fat-loss stop.

Night shift vet. 16-day scale stalls are normal when your sleep block flips. Weigh after your main sleep, not by the clock. I track navel, thigh, upper arm with a cloth tape. My scale lags tape by 2-3 weeks. Concrete check: are your lifts going up or reps easier? If yes, you're still recomping. If not, look at shift-flip weeks and late-shift snacking. What's your sleep block right now?

👍 3

Have you compared your 7-day average weight this week to your 7-day average from two weeks ago? During my stalls, that gap still moved even when the daily numbers looked frozen. Also, a half inch off the waist plus better fasting glucose and RHR is a pretty clear signal that the scale is just catching its breath. One tracking tweak: measure waist after a normal exhale, same spot, before breakfast, and note it weekly rather than daily. Did the half inch come off gradually, or did it show up all at once after a few flat weeks? That pattern might tell you more than the scale right now.

👍 3

My first long plateau came right after I started batch-cooking a saltier bean soup and adding pickled stuff to lunches. Waist kept shrinking, scale sat 19 days, then dropped 2 lbs over two mornings. Did your cooking shift around when the stall started—more takeout, broths, or salty snacks? I only ask because my sodium/carb timing swung hard during that stretch. Not saying change anything, just a two-week meal scan might be a useful puzzle piece.

👍 3

Waist down another half inch while fasting glucose and RHR improve is the recomp signature—scale’s likely holding water/glycogen. New thing to check: did you start creatine or shift more carbs pre/post lifting right around day 0 of the stall? That can mask 2–4 lb of fat loss for weeks. If yes, I wouldn’t touch calories; keep protein high and compare same-day waist, arm, thigh, plus top-set loads. If no, I’d still give it another 2 weeks before changing anything. What’s your protein sitting at these days?

👍 3

I log a “divergence” column: waist change minus scale change. When scale is flat >14 days and waist still drops, my old sheets say it’s usually water masking fat loss, not a pending whoosh. Spring 2023: 17 days at 184.6–185.3, waist -0.5", fasting glucose -7, then 2.6 lb down in 6 days. The variable that moved first was my 7-day sodium average, not calories. Are you tracking sodium/carbs, or just calories? I’d plot 7-day weight avg against 14-day trendline before changing anything. Mine crossed down on day 18.

👍 5

Empty-nester here too, and your numbers sound like my last spring: scale flat about 3 weeks, but pants looser. What finally moved it wasn’t food—it was sodium. I’d switched to more homemade soups and sauerkraut, thought I was being “healthy,” but the salt had me holding water. Two days of normal-ish salt and extra water, plus a lazy Sunday, and I dropped 2.5 lbs overnight. Have you changed any condiments, deli meat, or electrolyte drinks lately? That’s the first thing I’d audit before touching calories.

👍 3

Hey, small-town pharmacy counter here — I spend my days explaining insurance copays, so I get obsessive with tracking. I’d stop chasing the daily number and do a weekly waist/photo check instead. What jumped out: your fasting glucose and resting HR both improved while the scale sat still. That’s not nothing. For me, a 2-week flat spell with waist still dropping usually meant I was holding water from extra repair/salt, and it let go after a couple good sleep nights and a sweaty Saturday. Sharp question: are you measuring waist at the same time of day, same spot, after exhaling normally? I was accidentally sucking in for weeks and getting fake half-inches. Also, check rings/socks — puffier than usual? If yes, likely fluid, not fat. Keep the faith.

One thing I’d check: sodium/carb ratio, even if calories are identical. I had a 19-day stall at 198 while my waist dropped 1.25 in; a higher-carb, lower-sodium day (rice + home food, no takeout) flushed 2.4 lb in 48h. Same food but a new protein bar/shake brand can add 300–600 mg sodium and mask the scale. Have you compared your waist at the same spot/time over the last 4 weeks? Your RHR 72→64 and fasting glucose 104→96 look like the actual progress trend.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Check your lifting variables: did you bump volume/load or start creatine in the last couple weeks? Both can park the scale via water/glycogen while fat keeps moving. I had a 21-day flat at 181 while squat volume went up; waist dropped 1.25 in, then scale fell 2.8 lbs over four days after a rest day. Also—are you measuring waist at the same time (morning, before food, after bathroom)? That half inch is real data, not noise. What’s your sleep been like? Poor sleep spikes my water weight more than sodium.

👍 4

For what it's worth, The glucose/HR changes are the real win. My 3-week stalls usually broke after a random high-step weekend—not a calorie change. With two kids, my snacks were the hidden variable: handfuls of their crackers/cheese while packing lunches. I started weighing my own snack plate instead of grazing from the drawer. Also check if your sodium was up from a chaotic takeout/leftover night. Any chance the snack drawer has been more in play lately?

Same here—my pants noticed before the scale did. Your walks are doing quiet work, friend.

Are you comparing monthly averages or just this 16-day window? In the old “stall club” thread, a flat scale with a shrinking waist usually meant water was masking fat loss. What helped me was logging a 7-day rolling average and only judging it every 4 weeks, same-time waist measurements, and notng sleep/stress. My longest plateau lined up with a brutal work month, not calories. If your month-over-month waist is still down, I wouldn’t change much yet. What does your 4-week trend look like?

👍 1

Spreadsheet nerd take: plot your 7-day rolling weight average, not daily. A range of 196.0–196.8 can still hide a slow downtrend. I had a 19-day flat daily scale while my weekly waist dropped 0.75", then the scale dropped 2.1 lb in 48h. Also check your waist protocol—same time, same exhale, same landmark. Mine drifts 0.25" if I measure after coffee or without. What’s your rolling average doing versus 16 days ago?

Cafe owner here. My first long stall was invisible: the “just tasting” — spoon of soup, broken cookie, sip of latte, edge of brownie. Never logged because it wasn’t a meal. I started putting a saucer by the pass and literally placing every QC bite on it for an hour. Turned out to be 150–250 cal most days. Are you tracking

👍 7 ❤️ 1

Dorm tuna + rice phase had my scale frozen but my jeans loose, so I just kept eating my sad lil bowls lol

This screams water masking progress to me. One thing I’d track: sleep and stress. When my scale froze for 3 weeks, my waist kept dropping, but I was sleeping 5.5 hours and stressed. I added a 10-min wind-down and kept carbs more consistent around workouts; the scale finally moved 4-5 days later. Not saying that’s your fix, but have you looked at sleep quality or any new stress? Also, are you measuring your waist at the same time and tape tension? Half an inch is huge—congrats. I’d keep the scale in its lane and watch the trend line.

👍 6 ❤️ 3

One thing I track during a flat stretch is a 7-day rolling average for weight and steps, because daily numbers can hide the trend. When my scale stalls but my waist shrinks, my sleep is often shorter or my stress is higher, and that seems to hold onto water. Have your sleep or stress levels shifted over these last 16 days? Also, are those 7k–9k steps a daily average or just your better days?

👍 5 ❤️ 1

late night gaming + soda swap here. the thing that breaks my stalls is usually sleep timing, not calories. if i'm up till 3am on zero sodas, my morning scale is +0.5-1 lb for days even with same cals, but waist keeps creeping down. how's your sleep and sodium lately? also are you weighing at same time after bathroom? for me a 16-day flatline usually ends after a random higher-sodium/higher-carb day + solid sleep, then drops 2 lbs overnight. not medical, just my n=1 tracking.

👍 5 ❤️ 2

Scale flat + waist shrinking usually means water is masking fat loss. I had a 19-day flat at 174 while my waist dropped an inch, then it broke after a couple good-sleep, lower-sodium days. For me, daily weigh-ins were noise. What helped was a 7-day average plus measuring waist at the navel, same morning, after exhale, before coffee. My narrowest-point waist told a different story than navel, and switching spots made it look like progress vanished. Are you measuring at the exact same landmark each time? That’s the one variable I’d check before changing anything else.

👍 4 ❤️ 2

Tbh i’m in that same empty-nester restart phase—walks, new recipes, trying to be patient. During my last long scale stall, what kept me sane was picking one pair of jeans and one tape spot (right at the navel, Sunday morning, before coffee). The scale didn’t budge for about three weeks, but the jeans got easier and my waist dropped almost an inch. So your half inch is real progress. Are you noticing a specific shirt or pair of pants fitting differently yet? That was my tiebreaker when the scale sulked.

👍 3

Cafe owner here, and stalls hit different when you’re surrounded by pastry. One concrete thing: are you weighing your “tastes”? A spoon of ganache, crust trim, a swig of latte foam can quietly add 150–250 cal/day and stall the scale without touching your waist. I started a one-week taste log and it was humbling. Also, measure your thigh or upper arm—my waist kept shrinking dring a 3-week scale freeze while my thigh dropped half an inch. Your glucose and HR trends say you’re winning; the scale is just the last to know.

👍 5

Night shift here. I don’t trust the scale after a shift. Fluid shifts are real. I weigh after my main sleep, after bathroom, before coffee. Same day each week. If waist is down and glucose/HR improved, that’s the signal. Check your lifting log: are reps or weight still creeping up? If yes, you’re recomping, not stalled. Scale is just slow to show it. Also look at sodium and carbs over those 16 days—restaurant food, soy sauce, pizza. I can hold water for days. No whoosh hype needed. Give it two more waist measurements.

👍 1

For what it's worth, my scale stalled 3 weeks while my jeans got looser—trust the tape!

👍 4

the waist + glucose + RHR changes would make me suspect the scale is just the last thing to move. My n=1: a 16-day flat stretch ended right after two lower-body sessions left me sore; I was holding water/inflammation even at the same calories. Did you change rep ranges or add a new lift recently? Also, are you measuring waist at the same time and spot? I have to do it before coffee/after exhale or I get noise. Kind of feels like a whoosh setup to me, but I’d trust the tape over the scale this week.

👍 3

stall club classic—scale pouts while the tape keeps winning. Been there.
