Hi from Cara: better labs, worse sleep

Hi everyone. I'm 41, a school nurse, and I've been lurking since last fall while my doctor and I chip away at blood sugar stuff. I'm not a big data person — I count calories mostly because it's the one habit that keeps me honest — but I finally got bloodwork back that looked better than it has in years, and meanwhile I'm sleeping like garbage and feel flat all day. Is that a thing, where the numbers get better before you actually feel better? I'd honestly rather hear what worked for you than look at another chart.

Ferritin 42 to 68 is a big move. Did u run ferritin with CRP or separate? My sleep dips when ferritin climbs fast, but that could just be my weird pattern.

Sleep score 82 to 71 with HRV down 7 points—that's not nothing. What tracker? Oura and Whoop can drift on HRV after firmware updates.

Not the tracker. My Oura did the same after a firmware push in Feb. Older baseline was useless for 3 weeks.

My free T3 was low when ferritin was 40. Once ferritin came up, sleep improved, but that's just my n=1.

The fish/late eating swap could matter more than the labs. I moved dinner earlier and my deep sleep went up before CRP changed.

How much later were you eating before? I’m asking because my HRV tanks if I eat within 2 hours of bed.

Same, but my CRP didn't budge until I cut seed oils. Sleep was the same though.

What does your training load actually look like? +10% could be fine, or it could be hiding harder intervals. Sleep debt from intensity sneaks up.

This is the puzzle. CRP down but feel flatter often means the marker improved while something else got worse—sleep architecture, iron, calories, stress. I logged subjective energy daily for 2 weeks and compared to HRV. My own n=1: ferritin 70-90 felt better than 110+, but sleep was best when bedtime was consistent. That’s just me though.

Did you get CRP after a hard week or a rest week? Mine swings 1.5 points depending on whether I tested aftre a long run.

Yep. I started testing same day, same time, fasted, no training 24h. My 'improvement' turned out to be noise.

Noise is why I stopped chasing single labs. Symptoms + 14-day rolling HRV told me more than one CRP draw.

I’ve been tracking this exact pattern for about 14 months. Hs-CRP fell from 3.2 to 0.9 after I cleaned up diet and added zone 2, but my sleep score dropped from 84 to 73 for the first 6 weeks. HRV bottomed at 38 from 47. What finally moved it was changing my evening light and moving my last meal to 4 hours before bed, not touching supplements. Ferritin also rose from 55 to 102, which I think helped. Not saying that’s your answer, just that the timeline can look ugly before it gets better. I’d love to see your 4-week rolling averages instead of single points.

The 14-month timeline is encouraging. My resting HR stayed flat during a similar CRP drop, so it can be load or just season. Sleep tracker first.
