Intro: 12 weeks in and the 3pm wall

Hi everyone, Tom here, 44, I run a small landscaping crew so I'm on my feet most of the day. Spent about a year lurking while my yearly physical quietly shifted from "you're fine" to "let's keep an eye on this." Since then I've ditched the afternoon vending machine runs, been lifting three mornings a week, and walking the dog after dinner — down a belt notch and a half and my knees are happier. The weird part is I still hit a wall around 3pm unless lunch has actual fat in it, and I can't tell if that's just my body adjusting or if I'm doing something dumb. Glad to finally stop lurking.

Welcome. The 3pm crash after insulin drops fast happens to me too. Did your sleep change when you added the after-dinner walks?

Sleep was already decent, but my crash got worse on days I skipped fat at lunch. Carbs alone at noon wreck me.

What was your starting weight? Fourteen pounds in twelve weeks is great. Six weeks of tracking and it's five down, but waist is down two inches, which honestly feels like the number that matters more.

Waist over scale every time. My scale stalled for a month, then whoosh. Did you take measurements?

Yep, waist and resting heart rate. My RHR went from 68 to 61. That tracked with the afternoon dip more than weight did.

The 3pm thing might just be meal pattern. I fixed mine by shifting more protein to lunch instead of breakfast. N=1 though.

How many grams of protein at breakfast? Twenty barely registers. Fourty and the whole morning is different.

I was almost exactly there at week 12: fasting insulin 17 to 8, A1c 5.9 to 5.5, 13 lbs down, and that 3pm cliff was my biggest annoyance. The weird part was that fat at lunch did stop it, but it also made me foggy and nap-ish, so I started tracking sleep and lunch timing instead and found my real trigger was a 5.5- to 6

My 3pm crash turned out to be a sleep-debt alarm, not a lunch-fat problem, which felt backwards since adding fat did help me short-term. At week 16 I did a nerdy 10-day log: nights under 6.5 hours, I cratered at 2:40 like clockwork and wanted sugar; nights over 7.5 hours, same lunch (turkey, rice, veg), same workout, zero crash. The surprise was that a 15-minute walk at 1:30 helped me more than a bigger lunch, and my waist dropped another inch over 5 weeks while the scale only moved 1.5 lbs. Might be worth tracking sleep and caffeine cutoff for a week before you add more fat at lunch—my 1pm cutoff was the difference between a 3pm cliff and coasting to dinner.
