Longtime lurker, finally saying hi

Hi everyone, I'm Casey, 52, a school library aide in Ohio. I've been reading up on GLP-1 stuff since spring and lurking here for a few weeks, mostly trying to figure out what's normal and what's just me. My dad had type 2, so I'm trying to be less surprised by my blood sugar and more consistent with sleep and walking. I'm not a spreadsheet person, but I did notice my mornings look better when I actually go to bed on time. Glad to be here.

Welcome. That A1c drop in 14 weeks is quick. Did sleep change happen before or after the weight loss started?

For me, consistent sleep dropped fasting glucose by 6 points before any weight changed. Sleep is underrated.

I’d bet the 25 lb loss and waist change did most of the A1c work. Sleep may just be correlated.

Maybe, but sleep affects glucose independently. I saw dawn phenomenon flatten after a fixed bedtime.

What was your sleep like before? Hours, wake-ups, screens? I’m trying to figure out my onw pattern.

My trigs only budged when I cut alcohol and late carbs, not when sleep improved. Different lever for different markers.

Sleep is the boring cheat code. Nobody wants to hear it.

Do you use a CGM? A graph would show whether sleep or training moved the morning number.

Sleep seems to be the lever for morning glucose — the CGM looks a lot calmer on 7.5 hours. Lifting days, noticeably less so.

Welcome. Conssitency is the right goal. I’d track waist-to-height next, not just scale weight.

Waist is good, but A1c every three months is slow feedback if you’re experimenting.

Fasting glucose plus waist weekly gave me faster feedback without aCGM.

Your hs-CRP drop is impressive. Mine barely moved until I ate more fish and slept more.

Fish or just fewer ultra-processed calories? Hard to isolate in a 14-week n=1.

Exactly. I log everything and still can’t tell what did what. The body is a messy dataset.

Did caffeine or bedtime change too? Those moved my resting heart rate more than steps did.

Following. Similar numbers here: 5.8 to 5.5 over 16 weeks, mostly from sleep and walking.

5.8. Down to 5.5 now. Late screens wreck my morning glucose, so I charge my phone in the kitchen.

That phone-in-kitchen trick helped me too. Weird how much a small habit shifts the morning reading.

I’d track sleep regularity next. Same hours every night beat total hours for my glucose.

The sleep-versus-weight debate is hard because both changed at once. I had a similar 15-week stretch: weight down 18 lb, A1c 5.7 to 5.3, but my sleep also went from 5.5 to 7 hours. When I later stalled on weight for six weeks, my fasting glucose still miproved slightly if my bedtime stayed consistent. That made me think sleep has its own effect, not just a proxy for eating less. But I can’t prove it. A CGM plus a fixed bedtime and the same meals for two weeks would be the cleanest self-test I could run.

That self-test idea is solid. I might run a two-week fixed bedtime and log fasting glucose, no othre changes.
