Three months in, and it's the small routines that surprised me

Tbh Our youngest left for college in August, and I figured I'd just rattle around this quiet house feeling sorry for myself. Instead I started walking — 15 minutes after dinner at first, because that's all my knees would agree to. Thirteen weeks later it's 45 minutes, and I've added a Sunday cook-ahead session: sheet pan veggies, a pot of beans, something I can actually reheat on the nights I used to order out.

The scale is down 21 pounds, which I do notice. What I didn't expect is being down two jeans sizes and having my wedding ring spin around my finger. My husband says I hum while I chop onions now.

Nothing dramatic here. Just the walk, the cooking, and letting the medication quiet enough of the noise that I can hear what my body's actually asking for. Curious whether anyone else found the habits stuck before the numbers did?

The Sunday beans + sheet pan combo is genius. I do a similar “component prep”: roast two trays, cook a grain, make a jar of dressing, then dinners are assembly. One thing that surprised me: my daily weigh-ins got way les emotional once I started watching the 7-day average instead of the day-to-day. Last week my scale bounced 3 lbs and the trend line barely moved — that quieted the noise. What’s your go-to bean pot? I’m in a chickpea rut.

Aw, I love this. The after-dinner walk was my surprise too — but mine only stuck once I put my sneakers by the back door and queued up a silly audiobook. Rainy nights I do laps at the school gym or just march around the kitchen during commercials. Sunday prep: I do a big pot of beans plus roasted carrots and onions, then freeze half in quart deli containers. Curious — do you prep breakfasts too, or just the main meals? And has your local pharmacy been easy to deal with? Ours switched our insurance to 90-day refills and it threw me for a loop, but the pharmacist is a sweetheart.
