Three-year vet here. I remember a thread last fall where several of us were basically drinking shakes and calling it dinner because solid food felt impossible. I'm 14 months in, down 63 lbs, and my appetite still goes through weird phases. For three weeks I tracked honestly: my old pattern was coffee until noon, then trying to cram 120g into dinner. I'd get maybe 70g and feel gross. Small shift: I front-load two easy anchors. Plain Greek yogurt with a handful of berries around 9am (about 20g), then a small tuna pouch or 4 oz leftover chicken at lunch (25g). Afternoon is a shake if I need it, not a religion. Dinner just has a palm-sized protein and whatever veggies are dying in the fridge. Most days now land 100–115g without the nightly panic. Not perfect, but sustainable. For those who've been at this a while, did your protein strategy change as your appetite changed, or did you just white-knuckle the same meals?
Finally found a protein rhythm that doesn't feel like a second job
Three-week honest tracking is the real win. For me the fix wasn’t a bigger dinner, it was a 20g “anchor” at my first real hunger cue—usually 10am—so dinner only needs 40–50g, not 120. Concrete go-tos: plain Greek yogurt + berries + chia, or two eggs and a slice of toast. I still weigh daily but only act on the 7-day trend; a 2 lb overnight bump after a late salty meal is noise. Curious: did your tracking show you were actually hungry later, or just trying to hit a number after coffee all morning?
Night shift here too. My fix was dropping the 120g dinner plan. I cook 3 lbs of chicken thighs on my first day off, shred, portion into 4oz deli cups. That's roughly 30g each. I eat one cold at 3am with hot sauce and pickles. No cooking, no decision. Other two are eggs and cottage cheese. I aim 30g within an hour of waking, then every 4 hours. Still get phases where nothing sounds good, but the cups don't care. Sharp question: do you count shakes in your total or only solid? I had to stop counting them or I'd skip real food.
This resonates. Since the kids moved out, I’ve been walking most mornings and actually cooking again, but protein was still a puzzle. What finally clicked was treating it like a picnic: small, boring, portable. Two hard-boiled eggs before my walk, then a mason jar of Greek yogut with frozen berries that thaw by lunch. Dinner just gets a palm-sized piece of whatever we’re having. My appetite feels steadier, and I’m not foraging at 9 p.m. anymore. Curious—did your rhythm end up tilted earlier in the day, or spread out? And did walking before eating change anything for you?
