Sealed vials, old labels, and my own cutoff date

night shift here. I keep a small drawer of sealed vials. The labels say one thing. My gut says another. Found two unopened from last winter. Date passed four months ago. I pitched them. Not worth the question mark. My rule: if I have to squint at the label and do math, it's gone. I'd rather replace than wonder at 4 a.m. Cheap insurance. Anyone else use a personal cutoff shorter than the label?
