Eight weeks, boringly linear, and the scale agrees

Eight weeks ago I started tracking this properly instead of vibing. Start 94.1, this morning 87.4. Roughly 0.85 kg/week, which is boringly linear, which is exactly what I wanted.

The unglamorous parts: 30g protein at breakfast, a 40-minute walk most days, and a hard stop on eating after 8pm. That last one did more than anything else and I resent it slightly.

What surprised me: appetite noise dropped around week 5 and now I'm mostly just... indifferent to snacks. My old jeans fit. The scale and I have a professional relationship now, nothing more.

Frustration of the week: two days flat, then a 1.2 kg drop overnight, so clearly water is running the show and I'm just paying rent.

Anyone else see the whoosh pattern, or is my body just dramatic?

Honestly, curious whether you've actually logged what the 8pm cutoff removed, versus assuming it's the timing. When I did that, it was ~400 kcal of standing-in-the-kitchen grazing between 9 and 11pm that never made it into my old logs anyway — so the rule was mostly deleting an unlogged meal, not anything circadian. The mechanism gets oversold.

Also, in the trials the curve tends to bend somewhere around month 3-4, so a clean linear 8 weeks is great but I wouldn't read it as a permanent rate. Are you plotting weekly averages or just eyeballing the daily number?

Boring linear is the dream—congrats. The 8pm cutoff is the one I keep tripping on with two kids; there’s always a half-eaten granola bar at 7:55. What finally helped was a physical “kitchen closed” cue: brush teeth after bedtime snack chaos, make a mug of tea, don’t go back in. My snack drawer is pre-portioned now—cheese sticks, grapes, popcorn bags—and the good chocolate lives on a high shelf I need a stool for. Lazy-proofing, basically. Did your cutoff change your sleep or morning hunger? Late picking used to wreck my mornings even when calories were similar.

Night shift here. 8pm cutoff is meaningless for me. My body clock is inverted. I anchor it to sleep instead: stop eating 3 hours before my main sleep, whatever the clock says. Same effect, less resentment.

Also weigh after main sleep, same conditions. Mid-shift weights after coffee and salty food are garbage data. Your linear drop might partly be consistent timing.

Are you comparing like-for-like mornings, or just whatever time you wake up?

Eight weeks of linear is a gift, honestly. I hit goal a while back and the 8pm thing is the one habit I kept, but I had to change what it meant. Instead of white-knuckling the kitchen, I moved dinner 30 minutes later and made it the meal I actually looked forward to — big salad, protein, something warm. Then “closed” felt satisfied, not deprived. The after-dinner walk helped more than any app. Curious: when 8pm hits now, are you actually hungry, or just transitioning out of the day? That distinction changed maintenance for me.

The 8pm cutoff is a good example of one constraint deleting multiple failure modes. When I ran the same experiment, the log showed it didn't just remove ~300 calories of evening food — it also removed the wine that came with it and the dessert that followed the wine. One rule, three behaviors.

Worth testing whether it's timing or just total: slide it to 7pm for a week. If intake just migrates earlier and the rate holds, it was a volume effect wearing a schedule costume.

Also, 0.85 kg/week with no plateau at eight weeks is the part that would make me quietly re-check my logging, in a good way.
