Three months in and my cheekbones finally showed up again

small win I wanted to share, because I know a lot of us get stuck staring at the scale. I'm 14 weeks in, down 21 lbs, and honestly the number isn't what stopped me this week. I was scrolling old photos and found one from last spring — same angle, same terrible kitchen lighting — and my face is just different. Less puffy around the jaw, cheekbones I'd honestly forgotten I had. My sister noticed before I did, which was both nice and a little humbling.

The habits I actually credit are boring: a full glass of water before every meal, and a 20-minute walk after dinner instead of immediately parking on the couch. That's it. No dramatic overhaul. My face changed way faster than my waist, which surprised me.

Did anyone else notice the face thing first? And did it make you weirdly emotional, or was that just me?

Systems brain take: the scale is a lagging indicator. Face is a leading one. I set a phone tripod mark on the kitchen counter, same light, same dead-eyed expression, first Sunday of the month. Made a 4-up collage. The neck/jaw outline changed around week 10, scale didn’t move much that month. Weirdly useful. Question: did you also notice rings/shoes before the scale? That’s my other early-warning sensor.

Honestly, the face is a better dashboard than the scale. I started taking a monthly photo in the same hallway light and measuring neck circumference; neck dropped about an inch before the scale did anything dramatic. Scale is a lagging indicator, jawline is a leading one. Also learned that sodium, alcohol, and bad sleep show up in my face overnight, so I stopped comparing photos after restaurant nights. Sharp follow-up: what changed first for you — jawline, under-eyes, or that weird cheek hollow? I’m betting jawline.

I’m a few weeks behind you and the scale has been parked at the same number for 22 days. What kept me from hurling it out the window was measuring my upper arm and thigh for the first time — down 0.75" on each even though the scale didn’t move. Also my rings are loose and my collarbones show in crewneck shirts now. I have a dumb note on my phone: “scale is weather, tape is climate.” Has anyone else found a spot that changes before the number does? I need more places to look when I’m in plateau-brain.

Same thing happened to me around month 3, and it weirdly tracked better with my neck tape than the scale. I measured at

Same face surprise here — mine showed up in the bathroom mirror at 6am, before coffee, which never happens

Yes! I run a café, so tasting spoons and pastry edges are my daily trap. The first clue for me wasn’t the scale—it was my sunglasses. They used to leave deep marks on my cheeks; now they sit differently because the puff is down. I also started jotting “taste bites” in a tiny notebook instead of mentally writing them off, and that honestly helped my portions more than any strict plan. Cheekbones are such a great sign. Did yours show up first in the mirror, or did someone else notice before you did?

I travel constantly too, and my cheekbones are basically a sodium barometer. Airport pretzels + hotel bar peanuts = face gone by 9pm; then it reappears after a gallon of water and whatever sad hotel scrambled eggs. Weirdly, the thing that helps most is a 10-minute walk around the terminal or hotel parking lot before I shower. Not glamorous, but less puffy by checkout. Do you notice yours is best the morning after a travel day, or after you’ve been home a few days?

Congrats — cheekbones are such a weirdly great NSV. I’m lifting 4x and the thing that keeps me sane when I can’t tell if anything’s changing is tape: neck at mid-throat, waist at navel, same Sunday morning. My neck dropped about 0.5 in before anything else moved, and it lined up with the face change better than the mirror did. Protein and sleep seem to drive that for me more than cardio. Are you measuring neck/waist at all, or just eyeballing it? Curious whether your face changed before your clothes got noticeably looser.

Not the face exactly, but my “oh” moment was my car seatbelt. It used to dig into my neck no matter how I adjusted it, and last week it just sat flat on my shoulder. I’m on round two after regaining most of what I lost years ago, so I keep a stupid note on my phone called “proof” — seatbelt, rings spinning, stairs not leaving me winded. Did anyone else notice the cheekbone thing before you did? I’m at the stage where I still don’t quite trust my own mirror.

Congrats — the face change is weirdly validating. I’ve been tracking neck circumference just under the Adam’s apple with a soft tape, same time each week, because I didn’t want to over-read mirror changes. Mine dropped about 1.5 cm before my waist moved much, which makes me think some of the early face/neck difference is fluid plus fat loss layered together. In the trials, facial fat loss isn’t perfectly linear, so I try not to panic on stalled weeks. Did you notice a sequence — under-chin first, then cheekbones? I’m curious whether sleep or sodium shifts made yours pop more, or if it was just cumulative.
