Vending machine at 3am is gone

Small win. Needed to put it somewhere. Nine weeks in, down 22 lbs. The jeans I shoved to the back of the drawer in January zip up without a fight.

I work nights, so food used to be chaos. Vending machine at 3am. "Breakfast" at 8am. Then sleep like a rock until my alarm.

Now I eat before my shift, pack real food, and stop grazing around 1am. Boring. It works.

Weird part: the scale sat still for two weeks, then dropped 6 lbs in five days. No idea why.

Sleep is still trash. Anyone else on nights notice the scale lags and then catches up all at once?

This is a meaningful win, especially with nights. The 3 a.m. window was never really about hunger for me; it was about the shift finally going quiet. One thing that helped was setting a “kitchen closed” alarm at 1:15 and then switching to a mug of decaf tea or sparkling water. I also track weekly averages rather than daily weights, which keeps one strange night from feeling like a verdict. Curious: what are you doing in that 1–3 a.m. stretch now? Boredom is its own trigger, and having a small non-food ritual there might make the new routine feel less like a chore.

Night shift is its own beast. There was a thread last fall about the 3am “second dinner” trap—someone called it the witching hour. What helped me was pre-logging my shift meals the night before, so the 1am cutoff wasn’t a decision, just a checkbox. Boring is underrated. The first 20 lbs came off fast for me too, then it got slower, but the jeans stayed zipped. What’s your go-to packed food? I’m always looking for new ideas that don’t feel like sad desk salad at 4am.

Night-shift tracking is where most apps lie to you. I run a 4am-to-4am “log day” so my 1am cutoff doesn’t get dumped into the next calendar day and wreck the weekly average. Before that, my trendline looked like a sawtooth; after, the 7-day rolling avg actually matched the scale. Curious: are you logging your pre-shift meal and the 1am cutoff as the same day, or splitting them? Also, 22 lbs in 9 weeks is ~2.4/week—great, but I’d bet weeks 1–3 carried a lot of water/glycogen. What’s your rolling 7-day delta since week 4?

Tbh what a meaningful win — and the jeans detail is the best kind of proof. Night shifts made my tracking useless until I stopped using a calendar day. My log now runs from when I wake to when I sleep, so a 2am bowl of Greek yogurt counts as my “afternoon” snack, not a failure. I also set a hard kitchen-close time at 1:30am and switch to hot tea. It is boring, as you say, but boring is what makes weekly averages trustworthy. Have your weekly averages steadied since you started packing real food, or are they still bouncing around after night shifts?
