Week 9 and restaurant dinners are still tripping me up

Hi all, first time posting. I'm about nine weeks in, down 14 pounds, and doing pretty well at home. Give me a Friday night at the diner in town though and I turn into a whole different person. Bread basket, chips and salsa, all of it.

What's helped so far: I pull up the menu on my phone before we leave the house, order the lunch portion if they'll let me, and ask for dressing on the side. Last time I ate maybe half my plate and brought the rest home for Saturday, which felt like a small win. My husband got onion rings and I had two, not ten, and the world didn't end.

One thing nobody warned me about: my insurance switched in January and now I drive to the next town over for refills, so my routine is a little wobbly and I'm hungrier on days I'm running around.

Anyone have a go-to order when you're out with folks who want appetizers and dessert? I'm tired of being the weird one at the table.

Fellow road warrior here. My diner hack: I treat it like an airport meal—decide before I walk in, then order breakfast for dinner. Two eggs, turkey sausage, dry sourdough, fruit. It feels like a treat, comes out fast, and there’s no bread basket staring at me because the toast is already portioned. Also, I ask the server to box the chips/bread immediately “for later” and park it at the far end of the table. Weirdly helpful. Are you going out with the same people every Friday? My grazing is 10x worse when I’m mid-conversation, so I’ve started holding my water glass instead of reaching. Curious if that’s just me.

The thing that finally helped me at our Friday pizza place was ordering a cup of soup or a side salad the second we sit down, before anyone even opens a menu. Sounds fussy, but it gives my hands and my mouth something to do while the bread basket is just sitting there being loud. By the time entrees come I'm already half full and genuinely don't want the second slice.

Also: I stopped trying to be perfect there. One breadstick, enjoyed slowly, no guilt, beats white-knuckling it and caving at dessert. Curious whether your diner would let you order the lunch portion ahead when you call, or if it's strictly at-the-table? That could take the in-the-moment decision right out of your hands.

Weekends out are still my hardest stretch too, so you're not alone in it.

Fellow cafe owner here — my downfall is grazing all day, then acting feral at a restaurant. One weird thing that helped: I ask the server to leave the bread basket in the kitchen or bring it already boxed up, and I order a club soda with lime the second I sit down. Having a drink and no bread in frnt of me breaks the automatic hand-to-mouth thing. Also, if I want fries, I order fruit as my side and steal exactly five from my husband. Question: does ordering first or last at the table change how you do? I’m way better if I order first.

We hashed this out in the old restaurant-survival thread last winter: the bread basket is the boss fight. What finally worked for me at our diner was asking the server to hold the bread until the entrée lands—if it’s not on the table while I’m hungry, I don’t inhale it. Then I order a Greek omelet with fruit instead of home fries, or a club and box half immediately. I log it roughly while we wait, so I’m not doing math at 10pm. Nine weeks is early. Do you have one safe diner order yet, or are you still menu-hopping every Friday?

The bread basket is my kryptonite too. What finally helped: I ask the server to bring it already wrapped to go, or just not bring it, and I order a side of pickle spears or cucumber salad to munch while everyone else does bread. Sounds weird but the crunch scratches the same itch and I don't feel like I'm white-knuckling it. At diners, I also ask for salsa with a fork instead of chips—sounds unhinged, but it slows me way down. Have you tried swapping the table snacks for a veggie/pickle plate? Curious if that would fly at your diner.

Nine weeks and 14 down is real progress — the diner is just a whole different game. What finally helped me: I stopped deciding at the table. I pick my entire order, drink included, when I'm looking at the menu at home, and then I'm the first one to order at the table. Sounds silly, but once it's out of my mouth, I quit negotiating with myself. Also, if it's the same diner every Friday, has anyone tried a standing order — the exact same meal each time — so it's not a fresh decision every week? I can't tell if that would feel boring or genuinely freeing.

small-town diner person here too — our pharmacy is right next door, so I always park by it and tell myself the walk counts, ha. The thing that finally clicked: I order breakfast for dinner (two eggs, fruit, dry toast, coffee) instead of the Friday fish fry. It comes as a plate, so I’m not picking at chips while we wait. Also I sit on the side of the booth facing away from the chip basket. Does your diner do breakfast all day? Ours does, and it’s been my secret menu move.
