Week six and my digestion filed a change request

Six weeks in, down 14 lbs, and my gut has apparently entered its chaos phase. Last Tuesday looked normal — coffee, 40g protein shake, same as the prior 40 mornings — and by 2pm I was doing the bathroom sprint three times in one hour. No warning, no cramping, just a system that traded reliability for surprise.

The annoying part is the variance. Wednesday: fine. Thursday: fine. Friday: repeat. I started a phone note tracking fiber, fluids, fat, sleep, and time of day. So far the only variable that lines up is... nothing, which is a terrible result for someone who likes finding variables.

Small win: it's not daily, and it's not the misery some folks describe. Mild frustration: my plumbing currently has worse uptime than my old router.

Anyone else hit a stretch like this mid-journey and actually pin down the trigger, or did you just ride it out and let the system stabilize on its own?

Night shift here. Food was never my problem. The clock was. Same shake at 7pm vs 4am hits totally different. I logged first bite, last bite, sleep start, and bathroom runs in my phone for two weeks. Pattern was obvious: eating close to lying down after a shift. Yurs hit at 2pm — what did your sleep/wake look like that day? That’s the variable I’d track first.

Not blaming the shake, but batch/flavor swaps get me. Same shake for weeks, then a new “cookies” tub with sugar alcohols had me sprinting by mid-afternoon. I also noticed week 6-ish was when I was leaning harder on zero-cal fizzy drinks and electrolytes to stay full. Now I keep a dumb one-line log: shake, water, caffeine, fiber, sleep, lifting day. Any chance your sweetener/electrolyte/creatine or even water intake changed while the shake stayed the same?

Hi, brand new here — only week one, so I’m taking notes like a nervous student. Sorry your gut went rogue. Something I’m trying preemptively: a super basic phone note for sleep hours, stress level, water, and whether I walked after meals, plus a 1–5 gut score. Not to be nosy, but did anything else shift that week — sleep, stress, hydration, activity? I know the shake stayed the same, but maybe the context around it didn’t. Following because I’d love to know what helped you get back to boring and predictable.

Fellow cafe owner here. My gut plot twist wasn’t the shake either — it was the “quality control” bites. I started keeping a grease-pencil tally on the prep board: every spoon of ganache, crust trim, and sip of a remade latte. Turns out my rough afternoons were the days I’d grazed all morning without calling it food. The shake stayed constant; my tasting trail didn’t. Might be worth tracking the little bites between breakfast and mid-afternoon. Are your surprise days the ones you’re stuck on the line tasting more?

the lag is what messes with tracking imo. i had a soda-swap phase where i blamed whatever i drank at 2pm, but my notes app showed the gut chaos hit like 30h after the actual culprit. turned out my protein powder had quietly changed formula and added chicory root/inulin, and i didn’t notice for two weeks. does your shake label list any fiber blends or sugar alcohols? not saying it’s that, just the one thing my dumb spreadsheet caught that same-day logging totally missed.

Random angle: when my deficit got real, my total fiber/volume tanked without me noticing. I was still hitting protein, sleep, lifting 4x, but I’d cut the big salads and roasted veg because they weren’t “worth” the calories. Cue exactly that no-warning chaos. I logged fiber for 4 days, not just protein, and it was embarrassingly low. Added a cup of frozen berries + a big handful of spinach to my shake and some chia in yogurt—food, not a product pitch—and things evened out. Did your veggie/fiber volume drop as the weight came off, or has that stayed consistent?

Budget dorm rat here. My gut’s plot twist was the dining-hall “stir-fry,” not my shake. I started tracking by cheap protein base — egg day, tuna packet day, yogurt day — and the 2pm sprints only hit on mystery-sauce days. Sharp question: do your surprises cluster on class days vs dorm days? Mine were stress + walking + whatever

Fellow spreadsheet person here. I added columns for water oz, caffeine mg, sodium, and a 1-5 gut score instead of trying to remember. Weirdest pattern: my afternoon sprint days were under 70 oz water and over 2 coffees, shake identical. The 40g shake got blamed by default because it was the easiest variable. Wednesday might be useful — did your sleep, caffeine timing, or sodium change at all? I also started pre-logging the next day so I stop rewriting history after a bad bathroom hour. Not glamorous, but it separated actual triggers from innocent ones.

the surprise part resonates. I’m an empty-nester trying to rebuild routines, and I’d finally gotten walks + cooking into a nice groove when my gut started improvising. What cracked the code for me was tracking not just what I ate, but how fast and what I did in the 90 minutes after. A rushed 15-minute lunch followed by errands was my hidden trigger — the same food eaten slowly at home was fine. Might be worth jotting timing/pace alongside your usual log. Are you noticing any pattern with stress or rushing, or is it truly random?

not a shake thing for me either, but my gut chaos tracked with raid weeks. i was eating dinner at 11pm then logging off at 3am, and the 2pm surprise was basically my body reacting to that whole weird overnight stretch. what helped was moving my last real meal to like 7:30 and keeping a dumb note in my phone: bedtime, last food time, next-day bathroom count. after 5 days the pattern was obvious. are you eating later on the days it hits, or is your sleep all over the place too?
