Down 18 lbs but waist only lost 1 inch?

Started at 214 lbs, now 196 after 12 weeks. Fasting glucose went 102 to 94, LDL 138 to 121, so labs are moving. But waist only 39.5 to 38.5 inches. I lift 3x/week, walk 8k steps, mostly whole foods, no booze since January. I measure first thing, same spot at navel. Is this normal—scale and labs improving while tape stalls? Did anyone else have a long waist plateau before a sudden drop? Curious what data you tracked.

18 lbs in 12 weeks is excellent. Tape can lag because of water, glycogen, and where you carry fat. Did labs improve before inches too?

👍 2 ❤️ 2

Same pattern here. Down 22 lbs but only 2 inches off waist until week 16, then 3 inches in a month. Bodies are weird.

Are you measuring at navel or narrowest point? I got totally different numbers depending on spot.

I measure at navel, same tape tension, exhale normal. Maybe I should track both spots for a month.

The scale also includes food volume, sodium, glycogen, and water from workouts, so it can move while tape doesn't. Your glucose and LDL shifts suggest fat loss is happening somewhere, likely visceral or around organs, not just under the skin. For me, waist stayed 36 for six weeks while my squat and row went up and shirts got looser. Once I added two 45-minute walks and kept protein steady, the tape finally moved. What are your lift numbers doing? That might tell you if you're retaining lean mass, because if lifts are climbing you're probably not losing much muscle.

Labs improving is a huge win. Pants will catch up.

👍 1

Maybe visceral fat goes first. Mine did—waist barely moved, then sleep and labs got better.

I’d track thigh and upper arm too. My waist stalled while shirts got loose.

👍 2

What’s your protein and lifting progression? If lifts stalled, maybe the defecit is too aggressive.

👍 2

Not everyon eloses inches linearly. Mine came off in whooshes after whooshes, usually after a higher-carb day.

Pizza night does this to me too. I wake up lighter and my ring is looser.

12 weeks, 18 lbs gone, labs looking better. That's a win. Weird part is the tape measure sat there for 5 weeks and then dropped 1.5 inches in 10 days.

Navel tape lies. Try measuring your upper waist or how a belt notch changes. Mine lost 2 ntches before the tape moved.

I stopped trusting one spot. I measure navel, narrowest waist, and hips once a week, first thing, and track the 4-week average. My navel barely moved for a month while my narrowest waist dropped 1.25 inches. Also check the tape isn't twisted or riding up in back. Clothing fit and progress pics caught changes my navel missed.

👍 1

You're lifting 3x/week, so muscle repair holds water and glycogen, which can mask waist changes for weeks. My tape didn't move until I slept 7+ hours consistently and cut late salty dinners. Weekends were my hidden culprit: Friay takeout made Monday waist +1 inch, gone by Wednesday. Look at a 3-week trend, not weekly.

Photos beat the tape for me. I take a front and side shot on the 1st of every month, same mirror, same time, and that's the only thing that showed progress during my 7-week waist stall. The tape moved half an inch in that stretch, but the photos showed my back getting flatter and my shirt collar loosening. Costs nothing, takes 20 seconds.

Check your sleep before you change anything else. I was averaging 5.5 hours and my wait sat at 38 for six straight weeks while the scale dropped 9 lbs. Started getting 7.5 and within about three weeks the tape went 38 to 36.5 with zero change to food or steps. How's yours lately?

Took me 22 lbs before my pants knew about it. 218 down to 196, waist went 41 to 40.5, and I was about ready to quit measuring. Then over the next 18 days it dropped to 38. Related fail: I bought 34s at the 40.5 mark and couldn't zip them. Don't shop early.

Honestly your own labs are telling you the answer. Visceral fat around the organs tends to come off earlier than the pinchable stuff at the waistline, which is why glucose and LDL moved before the tape did. I'm the same, my A1c and triglycerides shifted a couple months before my jeans changed. Also worth checking whether you're measuring at the same time of day and hydration level every time, since I can swing half an inch from one salty takeout night. What are your shirts doing across the chest and shoulders? Mine got tight in the arms before anything else moved, and that told me more than the tape did at that stage.

Tape lagged fat loss by 6 weeks for me while lifting. I’d watch a 3-week average, not one Sunday.

👍 1

Are you measuring after a rest day or post-lift? My waist reads 0.75in bigger the morning after squats/deadlifts.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Take waist at same time, exhaled, no sucking in. I lost 2 inches in one month once I stopped pulling tape tight.

👍 5 ❤️ 2

I stalled at a 37.5 waist for almost six weeks while the scale went from 201 to 192, and what broke it wasn’t more cardio—it was realizing my Saturday sodium bomb was still there even though booze was gone. Restaurant chips, soy sauce, pickles: I’d wake up 2 lbs heavier and tape 0.5–0.75 inches up through Wednesday, then re-measure Friday and think I’d lost nothing. I started logging sodium for two weeks and capping it at 2,300 mg most days; by week three the tape finally slid to 35.75 and stayed there. Not saying that’s your issue, but your lifting plus 8k steps could mask fat loss with water shifts. Try measuring once a week, same morning, after a normal-sodium dinner, and track a 3-week average instead of one number. If the average is flat for six weeks while your weight is down, then change something. Also, is your waist at navel actually your narrowest? Mine was an inch lower.

👍 4 ❤️ 1

My tape barely moved while my old jans started falling down. Clothes were the honest metric.

👍 3 ❤️ 1

I track waist at three landmarks: navel, natural waist (smallest point), and iliac crest. My navel was the laggard: -0.5 in over 10 weeks, while natural waist dropped 2.1 in and iliac 1.4 in. Lifting 3x also made my trunk hold water/glycogen for 24–48h after sessions, so I only compare Sunday morning pre-lift. What does your 4-week slope look like? If weight is -1.5 lb/wk and navel is -0.1 in/wk, that’s still directionally consistent—just delayed and site-specific.

Not a doctor, just a dorm-dwelling tape-measure goblin. One thing nobody warned me about: heavy lifting can leave your core holding water/inflammation for a day or two. I was measuring Sunday after Saturday deadlifts and my navel was up 0.5–0.75" even in a deficit. Now I measure on a rest day, after coffee/poop, and also track hip/thigh/upper arm. My waist did the stall-then-drop thing—38.5 for ~5 weeks, then 37 in 10 days. Are you measuring the morning after lifting or after a full rest day? That might explain the lag.

👍 6 ❤️ 1

I’ve lost/regained, so I know the tape mind games. I hit the same wall: scale and labs moving, navel measurement flat for almost a month. What I found was I was measuring after coffee and subtly bracing. Now I do it before water, full exhale, same mirror, and average three mornings instead of trusting one. My navel also lags when I’m lifting hard or sleeping badly—midsection seems to hold water, then drops 0.5–1 inch overnight. Are you measuring fasted and totally relaxed? That was my missing variable.

👍 3

As a long-timer here: my first 20 lbs mostly showed up in labs, face, and upper back, not my navel. I have a short torso/apple shape, and my waist didn’t move until about month 4, then dropped 1.5 inches over a couple weeks. What finally gave me useful data was measuring weekly and comparing monthly averages, plus checking how a specific pair of jeans fit at the waistband. Are you shorter/taller? If you’re tall, 18 lbs may be a smaller percentage of your frame, so the tape lag makes more sense. Also—are you measuring after a normal day vs. first thing after a rest day? Bloat can easily eat half an inch.

👍 8 ❤️ 2

I’d stop judging it on one navel measurement and look at a 4-week rolling average instead. Mine swings ~0.75 in from sodium, a hard lift, or poor sleep—especially at the navel, where bloating and posture show up. In the trials, waist tends to lag scale weight early on; 18 lbs in 12 weeks with only 1 inch can happen if you’re also lifting and holding or adding some trunk muscle. Sharp follow-up: are your shirts fitting differently in the shoulders/chest? If yes, the scale loss may be part recomp, and the tape will likely catch up. If the 4-week trend is flat while weight keeps dropping, then I’d reassess how you’re measuring.

👍 6 ❤️ 2

Mine did the same: -20 lbs, navel 40→39 for 10 weeks, then dropped to 37.5 over about 3 weeks. What moved first was belt notch and side-profile photos, not the tape. I also log waist-to-height: 38.5/70 in = 0.55. What’s your height? If you’re around 5'10", that’s 0.55; at 5'8" it’s 0.57. The navel spot can be stubborn if you’re bloated or holding water. Are you measuring after a normal exhale or fully exhaled? I was accidentally bracing, which added 0.5 in.

Are your main lifts still progressing? That’s the first thing I’d check. If squats/RDLs/presses are holding steady or up while protein and sleep are solid, you’re probably recomping: muscle glycogen/water can keep the navel measurement flat even as fat comes off. I’m 4x/week and saw my navel barely move for 8 weeks while hips and upper thigh dropped ~1.5–2 inches, and jeans got loose. Track waist at navel, narrowest point, hips, and mid-thigh every 2 weeks in same lighting. Also compare side/front photos. Labs moving + lifts stable is a much better signal than one tape number.

👍 5 ❤️ 1

One thing I didn’t see mentioned: are you measuring on a rest day? I lift too, and my navel can sit 0.5–1 inch higher for a day or two after heavy squats/deadlifts—water/inflammation, not fat. My real trend only showed up on non-lifting mornings. If I were you, I’d add hip and upper-thigh tapes to the same weekly log. Mine went navel 40→39 while hips dropped 2 inches and thighs 1.5 before the belly caught up. Also, relaxed exhale after a few normal breaths, not sucked in. Does your waist change if you measure the morning after a rest day vs. after lifting?

👍 5

What are your big lifts doing? If squat/row are holding or climbing while the tape stalls, I’d trust the recomp and not change much. If they’re sliding too, I’d look at recovery and how much cardio you’re stacking on top of lifting. Also, my navel was the last spot to move—hips, upper thighs, and belt notch changed first. Are those moving for you? That gave me a better read than the tape alone. Just what I track.

👍 7 ❤️ 2

Honestly, Data nerd here. One thing I didn’t see mentioned: navel waist is a fickle spot—it can sit at a different place on your torso as you lose, and food volume/hydration can add a half-inch day to day. I started measuring both navel and narrowest point (usually an inch or two above) on a relaxed exhale. My navel was stuck at 39 for weeks while the narrowest went 37.5→36. That told me it was still happening. Also, are your lifts going up? If yes, muscle glycogen/water can absolutely hide tape changes for a bit. Curious whether your narrowest point is

small-town pharmacy gal here. One thing I never see mentioned: the navel is a terrible single landmark because it can sit higher/lower depending on posture and bloat. I started measuring three spots—narrowest waist, navel, and widest hip—and tracked the average. My navel lagged for 9 weeks while my narrowest waist dropped 2.25 inches. Also, after heavy lifting days I’d be up 0.5 inch from water/glycogen, so I only measured on a rest day after a normal bathroom morning. Are you measuring at the end of a full exhale, tape snug but not denting? That alone changed my numbers.

Have you tried measuring at the narrowest point and also 2 inches above your navel? My navel sits right where I bloat, so it was useless as a progress marker. Once I tracked waist-to-height plus how my jeans fit, I saw changes the tape missed. Also, are you measuring after a normal exhale? I was accidentally bracing a little, which added almost an inch. Same time of day, before food/water, made my numbers way more consistent.

👍 4 ❤️ 2

Waist at navel is a weird composite: visceral + subcutaneous + whatever’s in your gut that day. In the trials, visceral fat often drops early, but the tape can stall if subq is holding on or you’re retaining fluid from lifting. What helped me was also measuring narrowest waist and hips, then tracking a 5-day median instead of one spot. My navel barely moved for 8 weeks, but my narrowest waist dropped ~2 cm first. Are you measuring before vs after your morning bathroom/coffee? That alone swings me about 0.75 inch.

👍 7 ❤️ 2

same thing happened to me around that range: scale and labs moved, tape acted like it was on strike. What changed was timing around lifting. I bloat ~1 inch for 24–48h after heavy squats/deadlifts (water/inflammation, not fat), so I started measuring Friday AM after Thursday rest. Also took photos in the same cheap dorm mirror. Waist finally dropped 1.5 inches over the next month. Are you measuring after a rest day vs. after a lift day? If not, compare only same-day-of-week. Dorm sodium is my nemesis—canned tuna and instant rice turn me into a human waterbed.

👍 2

same here—tape lagged weeks behind the scale; navel spot is so finicky.

👍 8 ❤️ 2

My spreadsheet showed the same—tape lagged scale by weeks, then dropped all at once. Annoying.

👍 7

Had a similar stretch: 20 lbs down, tape didn’t move for ~10 weeks, then dropped 2 inches over the next month. What helped me was ignoring the daily tape and tracking a weekly average plus how my jeans fit. If your lifts are progressing and protein is high, you’re likely recomping—muscle glycogen/water can mask waist changes. Also, 18 lbs in 12 weeks is fast enough that subcutaneous fat in the lower belly is often the last to go. Question: are your main lifts still going up or holding? If yes, I’d keep the course and maybe add hip/thigh measurements for a fuller picture.

👍 4

Are you measuring after a rest day or after heavy pulling/squatting? I lift 4x/week and my navel tape can be 0.5–1 inch higher for 24–48h after a hard session—glycogen/water/inflammation in the core. Monday morning after a rest day and bathroom, fasted, is the only number I trust. Also, 18 lbs in 12 weeks is fast; early recomp often shows up in labs and scale before the navel. I started tracking 4-week averages and photos, and my waist finally moved around week 14–16. What does your weekly average scale trend look like right now?

👍 7

Same here—scale moved way before my tape did. Bodies are weird. How’s your sleep and stress lately?

👍 2

Night shift here too. My tape stalled 8 weeks while scale and labs moved. Squat and deadlift numbers were climbing, and my midsection held water/glycogen. After a deload week, waist dropped 1.5 inches fast. I also only measure after a full rest day, not after nights or salty food. Are your lifts still going up? If yes, I’d bet water is masking the tape loss.

👍 5

this happened to me too—tape lagged the scale for weeks, then caught up. Old thread called it the paper towel thing.

👍 4

I’m in a similar grind. The tape only started moving when I logged it weekly and ignored daily noise. Post-lifting days my waist reads 0.5–0.75 in higher—water retention in my core/back, plus bloat from fiber. On rest-day mornings after my normal bathroom routine, I’m consistently smaller. Are you measuring after lifting or after a rest day? If you’re always checking after three sessions, you might be measuring inflammation, not fat. Mine finally dropped 1.5 in over three weeks once sleep went from 6 to 7.5 hours. Scale and labs moving is a good sign; the tape can lag, then whoosh.

👍 4 ❤️ 2

Oh honey, same—my jeans got loose before the tape budged. Bodies are so weird!

👍 1 ❤️ 1

This cme up in the Jan thread too; my tape lagged the scale by weeks.

👍 3

Same, my tape stalled for weeks then suddenly caught up—hang in there 😅

👍 3 ❤️ 2

labs moving is winning! My tape measured the same for weeks—dorm bean chili did me dirty.

👍 1

Same here—down 20ish in the past, waist barely moved until month 4. What helped me see progress: measure at the same time of day, but only compare monthly, and also track how a specific pair of jeans fits. My tape stalled for 5 weeks while my squat went up; I think inflammation/glycogen from lifting was masking it. Then it dropped 1.5" over 10 days. Also, are you measuring after a rest day? For me, day-after-leg-day adds an inch sometimes. Hang in there, labs moving is huge.

👍 6 ❤️ 1

café owner here—tasting spoon is my nemesis. My waist stalled for weeks while scale dropped. What finally moved the tape was measuring on a rest day, not after lifting. I hold water in my belly for ~48 hrs after heavy squats, enough to hide half an inch. Also, I started noting my waist after a lower-carb dinner vs pasta night—bloating made a difference. Have you tried tracking your waist only on rest days for a month? And are you measuring first thing before coffee/water? That changed my numbers. Congrats on 18 lbs, labs looking better is huge.

👍 4 ❤️ 1

Not crazy. My navel measurement is the flakiest one—one big fiber-heavy dinner and I’m up 1.5 inches there next morning, while my true waist doesn’t budge. Are you also measuring your narrowest point (usually above the navel) and your hip bones? When I added those, I saw 2 inches come off my natural waist/hips while the navel stayed stubborn, then finally caught up. Also use the same cloth tape tension and exhale normally—don’t suck in. Labs moving is a huge win; that’s harder to fake than water weight.

👍 5

I feel this. I’m back after a regain too. My navel measurement was the most stubborn spot—hips, thighs, and bra band dropped first

samesies—scale moved, tape stayed put, then one morning my jeans were just looser. Hang in there!

👍 1 ❤️ 1

Same here—tape lagged scale for weeks, then caught up outta nowhere. Recomp is a weird, patient game.
