Why do my weekends undo my weekday progress?

Oct 1 2674 views 31 posts

For what it's worth, I have been tracking for 12 weeks, and my weekly average loss was 1.1 lb until this month. The last three weekends I have eaten out Friday and Saturday, and my Monday weigh-in is up 2.2 lb, then it drops by Wednesday. I know sodium and restaurant portions matter, but I feel like I am undoing five days of consistency in two evenings. I am not looking for medical advice, just wondering how others handle this. I plan to keep my weekday meals the same, log the weekends honestly, and maybe choose one meal out instead of two. Does anyone else see their weekly average stall because of weekend habits, even when the overall trend is still downward?

Been here since the old “Monday scale lies” thread, and this pattern is almost textbook. The 2.2 lb is mostly restaurant sodium/carbs/volume; actual fat gain would need a huge surplus. What helped me: I log Friday breakfast weight, don’t judge until Wednesday, and compare weekly averages (Fri–Thu) instead of Monday. Last month I had three birthday weekends and my Monday was +2.4 each time, but my weekly average still dropped 0.7. Sharp question: are you eating way more calories at those meals, or just saltier/heavier food? If it’s gone by Wednesday, your week isn’t undone.

Hey, I do the same thing. One thing that helped was comparing Friday morning to Friday mrning and Monday to Monday, instead of Monday to last Friday. My Monday number is basically a report on the weekend, not the week. I also started tracking weekends the same as weekdays—not to be perfect, just to see what’s actually happening. For me it wasn’t the restaurant meal itself; it was the leftover takeout Sunday, a couple drinks, and way less walking. Sharp question: when you eat out, is it just Fri/Sat dinner, or does it turn into Sunday brunch/leftovers too? That’s where my five days were actually disappearing.

data person here. The 2.2 lb is almost certainly water, food volume, and glycogen—not 7,700 extra calries of fat. What helped me stop spiraling was weighing Sunday too and comparing the same day across weeks, not Monday vs. Friday. My Sunday/Monday numbers after restaurant meals can jump 2–3 lb, but my 7-day average usually only moves 0.2–0.4. Are you looking at a rolling 7-day average, or just Monday? Also, were the weekends higher carb/sodium, or also way more total calories? If it’s gone by Wednesday, that’s noise, not undone consistency. Keep the trend line.

Hotel/airport person here. My Monday spike is almost never the restaurant food itself—it’s the later dinner, a couple drinks, and 4k fewer steps. One thing that helped: I weigh Saturday morning too. If Saturday is normal and Monday jumps, it’s usually water/gut stuff, not 2.2 lb of fat. I also ask for a box at the start and put half the entree away before I take a bite. Are your weekend meals way later than weekdays? That timing shift wrecks me more than the actual food.

2.2 lb is ~7,700 kcal surplus. Two restaurant dinners don't do that. You're almost certainly seeing sodium/carb water and glycogen, plus slower GI transit from richer food. What's your 7-day rolling average? If that line is still down ~1 lb/wk, weekends aren't undoing anything. I weigh daily but only make decisions off the weekly mean. Monday spikes are noise. Also check alcohol and meal timing—both move morning weight without touching fat mass.

I also track daily and plot a 7-day centered average. My Monday spikes are mostly water/glycogen/food volume: +2.0 lb after Thai and wine, gone by Wednesday. 2.2 lb of fat would mean a ~7,700 kcal surplus, which two meals won’t do unless you’re eating an entire cheesecake both nights. The real variable is your Friday/Saturday surplus versus Mon–Thu. I added a “weekend calorie delta” column; under ~1,500 extra total barely bends my trendline, over that it does. What’s your estimated surplus those two days?

Not to pile on, but what are your weekend steps like? My dorm week is accidentally active—stairs, campus walks, gym—then Friday/Saturday I become a blanket gremlin. I wore a cheap pedometer and saw I drop from ~11k to ~2k. That’s not the Monday spike, but it can quietly erase the weekly deficit. I started doing my grocery run on Saturday and walking to the far cheap store for eggs/tuna; feels less like punishment than a treadmill. Are your weekends way more sedentary too?

One thing I’d check: what are you comparing the Monday number to — Friday morning, or your lowest weekday? In my tracking, restaurant weekends often add 1–3 lb of water/glycogen/gut contents by Monday, then it flushes by midweek. 2.2 lb of actual fat would be roughly a 7,700-cal surplus, which is hard to do across two meals unless they’re enormous. In the trials, they lean on weekly averages, not single Mondays. Are your 7-day averages still drifting down over the last three weeks? If yes, you’re probably not undoing it; if no, the weekends may be adding enough surplus. I’d track Friday morning vs Monday and weekly average for a few weeks.

Been there—Monday scle is a drama queen; Wednesday tells the real story. Zoom out.

Same—my Monday spike is just restaurant sodium throwing a pool party; trend line says it’s noise.

One thing I’d add: check your Sunday, not just Fri/Sat. My Monday spikes made way more sense once I realized Sunday was also off-plan—brunch, salty leftovers, a couple drinks—so Monday was really reflecting a 3-day run, not one weekend outlier. I also switched from a 7-day mean

I keep a 7-day rolling average precisely because Monday weigh-ins lie. Your pattern—+2.2 Mon, back down by Wed—only matters if your Friday weights are also trending up. Compare Friday-to-Friday, not Monday-to-Friday. Mine did the same: after two dinners out, Monday +1.8, but Friday-to-Friday was still -0.9. The weekend moved the line, it didn’t erase it. What does your Friday-to-Friday trend show for those three weeks? If that’s flat or down, you’re not undoing five days; you’re just measuring the noisiest point.

I stopped comparing Monday to Friday and started comparing Monday to the previous Monday plus a 7-day rolling average. Last month

There was a thread last spring about “weekend math” and someone pointed out Monday is basically a digestive log, not a fat measure. What helped me: I stopped using Monday as my official weigh-in. I weigh Friday and Wednesday and compare same-day to same-day, then look at the 7-day rolling average. Also, restaurant Friday often turns into salty leftovers Saturday lunch, so my Sunday is still inflated. The real question: are your Friday-to-Friday numbers still trending down? If yes, the Monday spike is just noise. If your rolling average flattens over 3 weeks, then it’s worth tightening the weekend, not panicking over 2 lb.

For what it's worth, same! My Monday spike is usually sodium + food volume; gone by Wednesday. So annoying.

Night shift here. My weekend damage wasn't the food. It was the schedule flip. Eating out Friday/Saturday meant I ate at 7pm instead of 3am, slept worse, and my gut was off until Tuesday. Weigh yourself after your normal sleep block, not Monday morning after a short flip. Also, look at your Friday/Saturday liquid calories—drinks, sauces, dressings. Those add up fast and don't show on a plate. What's your sleep look like those nights?

Hi, I’m brand new here (day 4), so sorry if this is obvious—but could you compare Friday morning to the next Friday morning instead of Monday? I’ve started logging daily but only trusting the 7-day average. Otherwise one restaurant meal feels like a verdict when it’s really just one data point. Does your app show a weekly average? That’s the only thing keeping me from panicking in week one.

one thing I track now is which weekend meal does it. For me it’s not Friday dinner—it’s the Saturday late lunch, then grazing while I cook Sunday. I started taking Friday morning weight as my “real” weekly number and Monday as just info. Also, restaurant leftovers: I ask for a box right away and pack half before I take a bite. That one habit cut my Monday spike way down. Do you notice it’s worse when you eat later than usual? My scale hates a 9 p.m. dinner way more than a 5 p.m. one.

Question: what does Sunday look like? My weekends weren't just Fri/Sat dinner—they were leftover shrimp pasta at lunch Sunday, a few bites while cleaning up, and way less walking. I started tracking Sunday like a weekday and taking a 20-min walk after Friday dinner. Monday was still noisy, but the Wednesday drop got smaller and my monthly average finally moved. Also, are you weighing Sat/Sun? If you only see Monday, you can't tell whether it's a two-day blip or a three-day slide. Not saying it's all fat—just that the weekend often bleeds into Monday.

Cafe owner here: weekend nibbles + restaurant salt make my Monday scale dramatic too. It settles by midweek—you’re not undoing the week.

same, my friday ramen haunts the scale til wednesday then ghosts me lol

night shifter here. My weekend damage isn't the food, it's the schedule flip. Friday/Saturday I eat at 10pm instead of my usual 4am, sleep like crap, and Monday scale is up 2 lb. Are you tracking meal timing or just calories? Also, are you weighing after normal sleep or after a short night? That alone swings me 2 lb. Compare same sleep, same time. Monday panic number is useless if your sleep was different.

I’m week one and already scared of Friday lol—thanks for posting this!

Same—my Monday spke is usually just Friday’s restaurant sodium. By Wednesday I’m back to my usual, and I just keep walking.

My dorm microwave ramen Fridays say hi. Monday me is basically a water balloon.

Two kids here, so weekend structure goes out the window. My weekends used to start Friday night and not really end until Sunday dinner—so it was 2.5 days, not 2. I started keeping a snack-drawer box just for weekends: pre-portioned popcorn, jerky, cut fruit, sparkling water. One weekend breakfast stays identical to a weekday one. Restaurant meals still happen, but the all-day grazing is what killed me. Do you eat restaurant leftovers Sunday/Monday? That always stretched my weekend into a third day. Try splitting them into two lunches instead of one big second dinner.

For what it's worth, hi, I’m brand new here (week one), so please ignore if this is obvious. Something I’d check is weekend sleep and alcohol

Not the restaurant itself, but the “well, Friday is already ruined” dorm snack sesh after I get back. I’d have a reasonable burrito bowl, then inhale pretzels and peanut butter at 11pm while watching TV. The fun part: I wasn’t even hungry, just buzzed from being out. Now I keep a cheap protein anchor ready—tuna packet, cottage cheese cup, or two hard-boiled eggs from the dining hall—and if I’m actually hungry I eat that and log it. Mondy is usually only +0.6 instead of +2. Do you get the after-out munchies too, or is it mostly the meal portions?

Daily weigher here. The variable that cracked my own Monday spikes was timing: late restaurant dinners, salty food, and a drink or two reliably add 1.5–2 lb by Monday, even when my weekly intake is fine. I started tracking a rough “late + salty + alcohol” note instead of trying to estimate the meal. Then I compare my Friday–Sunday 3-day average to the previous weekend’s same 3-day average. If that’s flat, the Monday number is mostly water. Are your weekend meals much later than your weekday ones?

One concrete diagnostic: weigh Saturday morning after Friday out and compare it to Friday morning. If Friday dinner is the real culprit, you’ll see the bump right there. If Saturday AM is basically flat, then Friday didn’t undo anything—Monday is being driven by Saturday/Sunday plus normal water/glycogen shifts. I do this Friday-to-Saturday delta, and it stopped me blaming the whole weekend. What’s your Saturday AM number after a Friday dinner compared with Friday?
