New here, slow healing after nasal surgery—anyone else?

Hi everyone, brand new here. Five weeks out from major nasal reconstruction (cartilage graft and septal work) and the healing is dragging. Swelling is still pretty obvious, worse by evening, and one small incision took almost four weeks to close. Surgeon keeps saying 6-12 months is normal, but I'm anxious.

Stuff I've been tracking: 80 oz of water and 70-90 g of protein most days, walking 10-15 minutes when I can. Whether any of it matters, no clue, but it's the only lever I've got.

What I keep wondering about is the healing side of the GLP-1 conversation. These spaces are full of people four days in or a year in, and surgical recovery barely comes up. Has anyone seen a recovery like this go slower on one of these meds, or the opposite — protein and hydration seeming to actually help? And do peptides ever come up with your own care team, or is that something no surgeon wants to touch? Not looking for a plan, just nervous and curious about other people's experiences. Thank you.

Welcome. 80 oz is solid. I’m 3 months out from septoplasty + graft and also noticed evening puffiness. What finally gave me data: I logged sodium, sleep hours, and took morning/evening phone pics in same light. My evening swelling tracked way more with sodium over ~2,500 mg and under 7 hrs sleep than with total water. Front-loading most fluids before 2 pm and running a bedroom humidifier at 45–50% made the biggest visible difference for me. Not medical advice, just my n=1 spreadsheet. Are you tracking sodium/humidity, or just ounces? Also, are you sleeping elevated or flat? That was a huge variable for my morning vs. evening numbers.

Five weeks and one incision just closing would make me anxious too. Did your surgeon say whether it’s the graft site or the septal lining that’s still remodeling? I only ask because after a different surgery I tracked my intake and realized GLP-1 appetite suppression had me way under-eating—protein/calories were lower than I assumed. In the trials, nutrition status keeps coming up for wound repair, though obviously n=1 here. I started a same-light photo log, which helped me see slow change the mirror missed. Are you managing protein okay with the post-op eating stuff?

Healing’s a lagging indicator with noisy inputs. I tracked sodium, sleep, alcohol, and photo angle for two weeks; my face was basically a salt-and-sleep dashboard, not a calendar. If you want one variable to isolate, donor site. Was your graft ear or rib? Mine had its own slower curve that made the nose look worse by comparison.

The variable that made my evening swelling legible was sodium, not time. I logged dinners for two weeks and the puffy nights lined up with restaurant/takeout salt almost every time. Sleep angle was second. Are you tracking salt or just hydration? Five weeks is still early, but it gives you something to optimize instead of just waiting.

Hi! I’m a small-town pharmacy-counter chatter, so I track everything in a little notebook. One thing that helped: same-time morning photos in the same bathroom light, labeled AM day 8, day 15, etc. Side-by-side, I could see the trend was slowly down even when the mirror felt discouraging. I also noted salty takeout nights—mine looked puffier the next day, not right away. Are you sleeping propped at all? I ended up liking a wedge plus a cool-mist humidifier just for comfort, nothing fancy. And my insurance nurse line had a free recovery check-in, which surprised me; did your surgeon’s office offer anything like that between visits?

I had a different surgery, but the thing that finally moved the needle for me was calories, not time. I was accidentally eating in a deficit because I felt rough, and my incisions were stalled. Once I started treating recovery like a mini-bulk—Greek yogurt, eggs, rice, around 140g protein—and dropped lifting to two easy sessions, the last stubborn spot closed up within a week. Not saying that’s your issue, but are you tracking intake right now? Stress can tank appetite, and recomp math changes when your body’s rebuilding tissue.

five weeks feels forever, especially with kids. One thing I tracked that hasn’t come up: bend-over count. Picking up toys, loading the dishwasher, leaning over the bath—my evening swelling was way worse on high-bend days. I started using a grabber for floor stuff and had the kids dump laundry into a waist-high basket. Might be coincidence, but it made the pattern less random. Do you notice it’s worse after a chaotic afternoon vs a quieter morning? That question helped me stop panicking every single evening.
