Didn't expect to quit my nightly wine habit on this

Started this for recomp reasons — 5'10", lifting 4x/week, 180g protein, 7-8 hrs sleep. Down 18 lbs over 14 weeks, but the scale was honestly the least interesting part.

The thing I didn't see coming: I just stopped drinking. Not on purpose. I used to do 2 glasses of wine most nights, 3 on weekends. Around week 3 the urge kind of evaporated. Poured a glass on a Friday, took two sips, dumped the rest. It's been 11 weeks and I've had maybe 4 drinks total.

My sleep tracker numbers moved too — deep sleep up around 20 min average, resting HR down 5 bpm. Squat days recover differently now. I wasn't chasing sobriety, it just fell out of this.

Anyone else pick up some random side effect that ended up mattering more than the weight loss?

Tbh nice side effect. I’m curious how much is the drug vs. the ritual change? I had a similar drop in drinking, but I’d

I noticed something similar, though my trigger was the post-dinner routine more than the wine itself. What helped me was keeping the ritual: same glass, same time, but sparkling water with a lemon twist or a kombucha. I only track weekly averages, and the biggest shift was sleep consistency — wake-ups after 3 a.m. went from most nights to about once a week. Are you finding the urge faded because the taste stopped appealing, or because the after-effect just wasn’t worth it anymore? Curious what you’re noticing.

Systems nerd take: alcohol was probably load-bearing for your evenings. Remove the reward, the loop collapses. I logged urge intensity 1–5 for two weeks; mine went from 3s to 0s around day 20. Weird part: the ritual mattered more than the ethanol. Same wine glass, sparkling water + lime, same chair, same time. Are you tracking whether the 5pm cue itself is gone, or just the payoff? If the cue’s still there, it’ll eventually find a new output.

the ritual part is what got me. I didn't miss the wine so much as the "day is done" signal at 6pm. Took me a few weeks to realize standing on the porch with a La Croix and my dog for ten minutes scratches the same itch. Also my sleep tracker finally stopped looking like a crime scene — resting HR down 6 points, which I genuinely didn't connect to the drinking until I saw it. Curious whether you've noticed anything filling that slot yet, or if it just feels like a gap right now?

Same. The weird part wasn’t the cravings; it was the 6pm hand-to-mouth subroutine. I started logging “drinks” in the same app as protein and sleep, mostly to see if it was noise. It flatlined before I consciously decided anything. Replaced the glass with the same glass + seltzer, which felt ridiculous but broke the cue. Did your lifts or sleep numbers actually shift, or was the scale the only obvious metric? I’m curious whether the no-wine side effect is the real recomp cheat code.

fellow dorm-dweller here. My pre-this wine budget was basically a second meal plan, and now my grocery spreadsheet has a line item called “sad protein” — cottage cheese, canned tuna, whatever rotisserie chicken is marked down. The weird part is my bank app flagged the drop in liquor-store charges before I even noticed the urge was gone. Did your budget shift too, or are you just quietly saving that money like a responsible person while I reinvest mine in Greek yogurt?

I travel 3 weeks a month, and the weirdest one for me was airport lounges. The free pour at 5pm used to be automatic — now I just… forget? Last trip I grabbed a sparkling water with lime in a wine glass, and nobody blinked. Hotel minibars are still my final boss, though. I’ve started stashing a cold NA beer in the ice bucket so the 9pm doomscroll doesn’t turn into a $19 cabernet. Did your quit-the-wine thing carry over to travel, or is that a totally different trigger than being home?
