The zipper closed on a dress I almost donated

Tbh I have been tracking weekly averages instead of daily weights since the start of the year, and this week the number finally felt real to me: down 31 pounds across 22 weeks, roughly 1.4 pounds per week on average. The daily scale still bounces around, and I have slowly stopped arguing with it.

The small win happened last night. I pulled out a dress I bought two springs ago and pushed to the back of the closet because I could not zip it past my ribs. It closed. Not loosely, not perfectly, but it closed, and I stood in front of the mirror for a while without saying anything unkind to myself.

What helped most was unglamorous consistency: protein at breakfast, a 20 minute walk after dinner, and weighing myself only on Sunday mornings.

For those of you further along, did your non scale wins arrive in bursts, or did they creep up so slowly you almost missed them?

The weekly average is such a steady anchor, and the zipper closing is the kind of proof the daily scale cannot give you. I keep a “maybe” bin with a dated sticky note and revisit it the first Sunday of each month. If something still feels like a costume, it goes; if it closes comfortably, I wear it for a normal errand so it becomes real life, not just a mirror moment. Are you going to put the dress into regular rotation now, or keep it as a milestone piece?

Congrats — the zipper is such a specific, unarguable win. Something that helped me: I still weigh daily but only log it, and I star the days after salty dinners or hard workouts so I don't spiral over what's basically water. My last flat stretch was 11 days of the same 0.4-pound wiggle, then a 1.8 drop out of nowhere. Curious — do you still record the daily numbers and average them, or have you gone weekly-weigh-in only? I keep thinking about dropping to twice a week, but I'm pretty sure I'd start rounding in my head and lying to myself.

That zipper moment is the good stuff. I hit goal a while back and still track weekly averages—daily numbers are mostly noise. One thing that helped me: same outfit photo every 8 weeks, plus a pair of jeans I almost donated as my reality check. The scale can stall while the fit keeps changing. Curious—did you keep the dress, or is it now a trophy? I vote keep it. It’s weirdly motivating to have a before-piece that eventually just feels like clothes.

This made me grin. I had an almost-donate pair of jeans I kept through two moves, and the day they actually zipped I wore them to the grocery store for no reason. Did you keep the dress out as a visible checkpoint, or did it go back in the closet? I ask because I’ve learned to leave one “proof” item where I see it—there was an old thread about building an evidence pile for the bounce days. If it’s buried, I forget the win by Tuesday.

oh I love this — that dress earned its keep! One thing that helped me when the scale was bouncing: I put the scale in the hall closet and did a waist measurement with a seamstress tape every Sunday. Lost two inches before the number budged. Also, my small-town pharmacy tech told me to keep a “maybe” bin instead of donating right away, and I’ve already rescued three tops from it. Did you end up keeping the dress, or did you donate it after the zipper closed? I’m nosy and need to know.

Zipper wins are sneaky like that. I do something similar but with a monthly waist/hip tape measure and a photo in the same tee on the 1st—daily weights are too noisy for me, and week-to-week water can hide fat loss (in the trials, the average curve is what moves, not every data point). Concrete question: are you keeping that dress as a wear-it-now piece or a recheck-in-6-weeks benchmark? I have a “maybe” bin and retry every 4 weeks; it’s been a better motivator than the scale lately.

girl, I have a Rubbermaid “maybe someday” bin too. Every payday I try one piece after my shower—if it buttons without the waistband biting, it graduates to the front closet. My husband calls it the runway, ha. The almost-donated pile is dangerous because the second I fit something I start planning a whole outfit around it. Did you actually wear the dress out somewhere, or just do a living-room fashion show? And small-town perk: our pharmacy tech noticed my face looking different before anyone at church did, which was equal parts sweet and nosy. Congrats on the 31!
