Hundreds of GLP-1 Injury Lawsuits Now Flood New Jersey Courts

Topics: GLP-1 lawsuits, Ozempic lawsuit, New Jersey MCL, Bergen County, gastroparesis, Wegovy, Mounjaro, drug litigation

What Happened

New Jersey has become one of the busiest state venues in the country for GLP-1 injury litigation. Regional reporting this week counts hundreds of lawsuits alleging serious injuries from drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity, Zepbound and Rybelsus filed in Bergen County courts alone.

The wave is the state-court counterpart to a much larger federal docket. Since early 2024, product-liability claims over GLP-1 receptor agonists have been consolidated into a federal multidistrict litigation listing thousands of cases, most alleging severe gastrointestinal injuries, with gastroparesis, ileus and bowel obstruction the most common claims.

New Jersey formalized its piece of the litigation in October 2025, when the state Supreme Court designated pending and future GLP-1 gastrointestinal-injury cases a multicounty litigation (MCL) and centralized case management in Bergen County. A month later, the courts carved claims over NAION, a sudden-onset vision-loss condition, into a second, separate MCL.

Who Is Affected

  • Plaintiffs — adults prescribed GLP-1 medicines for type 2 diabetes or weight management who allege severe stomach and intestinal injuries, and who argue the warnings they received were inadequate.
  • The defendant drugmakers — Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, whose products make up the six brands named in the New Jersey case-management order. Novo Nordisk, whose U.S. commercial headquarters is in the state, anchors much of the state-court activity.
  • Clinicians and researchers — because the suits turn on warning-label adequacy, internal safety documents surfaced in discovery may become public as the MCL matures.

Timeline

  • 2017–2021 — semaglutide and tirzepatide products roll out for diabetes and later obesity; prescriptions climb into the millions.
  • 2023 — the first widely publicized gastroparesis lawsuits are filed against GLP-1 manufacturers.
  • February 2024 — federal judges consolidate U.S. GLP-1 gastrointestinal claims into a single multidistrict litigation.
  • October 16, 2025 — the New Jersey Supreme Court designates the GI-injury litigation an MCL and assigns it to Bergen County.
  • November 12, 2025 — NAION vision-loss claims are designated a separate second MCL.
  • October 2026 — regional reporting counts hundreds of Bergen County filings as new suits continue to arrive.

What This Means for Researchers

Litigation establishes liability arguments, not causation — that is what courts will weigh. But two practical signals matter for the research community. First, case series emerging from the pleadings add to the real-world safety record that regulators monitor alongside clinical-trial data. Second, the pressure lands on label adequacy for the whole GLP-1 class, branded or not.

The narrower research takeaway: the compounds under legal scrutiny are the same ones most frequently copied by gray-market sellers — an environment with no warning framework, no pharmacovigilance and no lot traceability whatsoever.

How to Verify Your Peptides

Whether you work with semaglutide, tirzepatide or research-grade GLP-1 analogs, independent analytical verification is the only meaningful check:
