Down 38 lbs in 5 months but waist barely moved — normal?

Sep 2 4047 views 60 posts

I'm 5 ft 6 in, started at 212 lbs in early January, now 174 as of this morning. I lift 3x/week and walk 8-10k steps. Meals are mostly protein and veg, roughly 1600-1800 cal. The weird thing: pants went from 38 to 36, but tape at navel only dropped from 43.5 to 42.25 inches. Scale moved 38 lbs, waist barely 1.25. I expected more. Am I losing muscle, water, or just unlucky fat distribution? Labs in March: A1c 5.4, fasting glucose 92, lipids improved. Anyone track both scale and tape with a big gap?

Navel tape is a liar for some of us. I lost 45 lbs and my navel didn't move until month 7. Hips and thighs went first.

👍 1

Time of day matters too. Morning vs after dinner is a 1.5 inch difference on the tape. Did you measure at the same time both days?

Same tape tension each time? I was pulling tighter when I felt discouraged. Once I marked the tape it stopped lying.

👍 2

I'd kill for 1.25 inches off my navel.

How do shirts fit compared to pants? My collar and upper back changed way before my waist. Fat loss isn't uniform.

Shirts vs pants is smart. I take monthly photos because tape says stuck while photos show my back rolls gone. Scale and tape lie differently.

I had a similar stretch: 205 to 168 over about six months, waist only 43 to 41. I was convinced I'd broken my metabolism. Turned out visceral fat can drop first, which doesn't always show at the navel, and my subcutaneous belly fat was the last to go. What helped me was measuring at three spots—navel, widest belly, and hip—plus neck. Neck dropped 2 inches while navel stalled. Maybe track a 3-site average instead of one point. Also, are you bloated from the bigger protein and veg volume? That can add an inch for me.

Not unlucky. Where you store fat is genetic. I'm apple shaped and my waist is always last. My legs looked skinny at 190 and my belly still looked pregnant.

👍 2

Core work and posture might matter. Not spot reduction, but when I slump my belly pushes out more. Dead bugs and planks changed how my waist measures.

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Posture is a real one. When I fixed my anterior pelvic tilt my waist dropped .75 inch without weight chang.e Looked leaner too.

👍 1

What do January vs now pics look like? I'd trust those over navel tape. 1600-1800 cal at 5 ft 6 and lifting 3x is a solid deficit. Labs improving is a win. If you're worried about muscle, how are your main lifts? If squat and bench are holding or up, you're probably fine.

👍 2

Down 34 lbs myself and my navel tape did the same stupid thing until I started measuring first thing, fasted, before coffee, and only after a rest day. Lifting can leave me 0.75 inch puffier for 48 hours. Also measure at the narrowest point, not straight across the belly button. My navel lagged two months, then dropped 2.25 inches in three weeks. So no, not necessarily muscle loss — waist fat can just be stubborn.

👍 3

Pants sizing is the better signal here. I went from a 36 to a 33 while my navel measured almost the same for six weeks, because my hips and upper belly deflated first. Are you tracking sleep and stress? My waist stalls hard when I’m under 6 hours or stressed at work, even with calories steady. One bad weekend of salty takeout can add 1-2 inches of bloat on my tape, then vanish by Wednesday.

👍 1

38 lbs is 18% of your starting weight — the tape is just late to the party.

👍 1

Pants 38 to 36 is a win. I’d take that over a navel measurement any day.

Your navel is honestly the worst place on the whole body to measure. Mine sits in a slightly different spot depending on whether I've eaten, how much salt I had, and how bloated I am, so I get 1-1.5 inch swings there in the same week. Try the smallest point between your lowest rib and your hip bone instead, same time of day, morning, fasted, after you exhale normally (don't suck in, don't pull tight), and take three passes and use the average. I switched and my numbers went from nonsense to actually tracking with the scale. Also check whether you're measuring after a lifting day versus a rest day, because the day after squats and deadlifts I hold a ton of water through my trunk and it shows up on the tape. Log it weekly, not daily, and give it 3-4 weeks before you judge the trend.

👍 3

My waist number sat still for almost a month, then dropped 1.75 inches in about nine days. Fat loss doesn't come off the tape in a straight line, it comes in chunks, and the pre-drop stretch is usually water masking the change underneath. Did your lifts hold steady or go up over those five months? That's the better answer to the muscle question than the tape is.

I tracked mine in a spreadsheet with waist, hips, chest, and thigh, and the opposite of what I expected was that my waist moved last while my hips and cest moved first. Losing 38 lbs in 5 months with 3x lifting and 8-10k steps is a big deficit, and if your main lifts are holding or climbing, you're almost certainly keeping most of your lean mass. One thing that helped me: measure the smallest point, plus hips and upper thigh, and also grab one photo a month in the same spot and lighting. The tape said 1 inch while the photos showed a completely different torso shape because the fat went from visceral to subcutaneous and my posture changed as the front load came off. If your squat or row numbers have held over 20+ weeks, that's your proof right there.

👍 5 ❤️ 1

Curious whether you're measuring hips and thighs too, or just the navel? When mine stalled at the waist, my hips had already dropped 3 inches first and I just wasn't looking there. Also, has your weight been steady the last two weeks or still dropping?

👍 3 ❤️ 1

My tape was stuck too until I realized I was measuring after coffee and a workout—first thing after the bathroom on a rest day read almost an inch smaller. At 5'8", 228 to 186, my navel went from 45 to 40, but in three chunks: nothing for six weeks, then 1.5 inches, then another long flat stretch. Are you checking at the same time and not after a salty weekend? Bloating can hide real loss.

👍 2

Stress week = waist up 1.5 inches even when calories were identical.

👍 2

38 lbs in five months is wild; your waist may just lag the scale by two months.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

I stopped the 'little' olive oil and nut butter; waist moved before scae did.

👍 4 ❤️ 1

Are you measuring at the exact same spot and time? I ask because I was measuring at the navel right after coffee and got 1.75 inches of movement in four months, then switched to first thing in the morning, exhale, tape snug but not denting, an inch below the navel — suddenly 3 inches in the same window. Naked vs the same leggings matters too. Maybe check both spots for a month before you panic.

hi, I’m brand new here (week one), so sorry if this is a silly question. When you tape at your navel, are you fully relaxed and at the end of a normal exhale, or maybe right after lifting? I notice if I’m even slightly bracing or bloated, my navel reading can swing close to an inch. Also, are you tracking hip and upper-thigh tape? On me, those moved before the belly did. Your routine sounds solid — congrats on 38 lbs!

👍 2 ❤️ 1

congrats on 38. another angle: navel is a noisy single sensor. mine stalled while my narrowest waist (above the belly button) and iliac crest went down, and belt notches moved before the tape at navel did. late-night gaming + salty snacks/carbonation can puff that one spot too. are you logging a weekly average of a few spots, or just one navel morning? also lifting 3x can make core/obliques thicker while the scale drops, so the tape can lag even when you're clearly leaning out. the 38->36 pants going looser is real data.

👍 9 ❤️ 1

Really nice progress. One thing I noticed in my own tracking: the navel can be a stubborn, squishy spot, so I logged three waist numbers—narrowest, navel, and top of hip bones. My navel lagged for months while hip and narrowest dropped first. Belts and how a 36 sits low on the

👍 1

One thing I wish I’d tracked earlier: waist after a rest day vs. after a heavy lifting day. My tape can swing 1–1.5 inches from water/glycogen/inflammation, so I started averaging 3 measurements a week and comparing monthly, not weekly. Also, are your lifts still going up? When my squat/deadlift climbed, the scale dropped but my waist lagged for weeks, then finally caught up. Saved me from panic. You’re doing a lot right.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Navel tape is a poor primary endpoint. Add narrowest waist, iliac crest, hip, and mid-thigh. Measure fasted, after exhale, no sucking in, same time of day. Mine stayed flat ~6 weeks while iliac crest and thigh moved. What are your hip/thigh circumferences doing? If those are trending down, “losing muscle” wouldn’t be my first explanation.

👍 6 ❤️ 1

Night shifter here. Measure first thing after waking, after bathroom, before coffee. Same spot. I was taping after shifts and it was garbage. Poor sleep and a gut full of veg/protein can add 1–2 in. Also track belt notch and how shirts fit, not just tape. My waist lagged hard, then caught up in a weird 2-week drop. What's your sleep and bathroom timing like? That was my missing variable.

👍 7 ❤️ 1

38 lb in 5 months is a lot — congrats. In the trials, waist often lags the scale by months, especially when people are lifting and high-protein; some of the early drop is glycogen/water, and trunk fat can lag too. A concrete check: your waist-to-height is now ~42.25/66 ≈ 0.64, so it’s still in a range where more change should come later. I’d also use monthly front/side photos and one “reference shirt” as non-tape endpoints. Sharp question: has your main lift gone up since January? If yes, some lean/fluid retention in the trunk could easily explain a slow tape drop.

👍 6 ❤️ 3

travel bloat is the hidden variable for me. I’m in airports/hotels most weeks, and my navel tape can swing 1–1.5” after a salty travel day + bad sleep, then settle after two quiet hotel nights. So I only log waist Monday morning, fasted, before coffee, same spot, normal exhale. Also, my back/ribcage got loose way before my navel budged — dress shirts were the early tell. If your 36s are loose in the seat/hips but snug at the navel, that’s probably fat-loss pattern, not muscle vanishing. How much of this 5 months was on the road? That may explain more than you think.

👍 6

Congrats on 38 lbs — that’s huge. One thing I’d add: check your tape technique consistency. I was accidentally measuring after coffee/food and sometimes pulling tighter. Switching to first thing after bathroom, before water, normal exhale, same spot, and tracking monthly averages showed my waist was actually down more than the single readings suggested. Also, how are your lifts trending? If your main compounds are holding or going up and shirts are looser across your back/chest, that’s a decent clue you’re preserving muscle while the waist catches up. Mine lagged about 8 weeks behind the scale, then dropped faster.

👍 5 ❤️ 2

Two kids, chaotic meals here. I switched to taping at the smallest point and tracking a 4-week average — navel was mostly kid-leftover bloat for me. What actually moved my waist: crackers/granola bars went into an opaque bin on the top shelf, and I made a grab-and-go protein drawer at eye level (cheese sticks, jerky, boiled eggs). Also, heavy lifting can thicken your core even while fat drops. Are you comparing waist to hip/thigh measurements too? My thighs and hips changed way before my waist.

👍 5 ❤️ 1

Hi, brand-new week-one member here, mostly lurking—but 38 lbs is amazing. One tracking thing I haven’t seen mentioned: are you marking the exact tape spot with a tiny washable dot and measuring at the same time each day, like morning after bathroom before food/water? I’ve been off by an inch just from tape placement and bloat. Also, how do the 36s fit at the waistband versus through the hips? If the waistband is getting roomier even when the tape stalls, that still sounds like real change. Wishing you luck!

👍 8 ❤️ 4

Honestly, huge congrats on 38! That’s a lot in 5 months. Are you tracking other tape spots besides navel? My waist stalled for ages while hips, thighs, and upper arm kept dropping. Lifting also changed how my trunk looks before the tape caught up. I’d measure chest, hips, thigh, and arm monthly, plus same-light photos. What are those numbers doing?

👍 5

I’ve done the lose-regain thing, so I get fixating on the tape. What finally helped me: I stopped comparing single mornings and looked at 4-week averages. My waist barely budged for almost six weeks, then dropped about 1.5 inches over 10 days while the scale was flat. Stair-step, not linear. Also, are you measuring at the end of a normal exhale without sucking in? I was subconsciously bracing, and that was a half-inch difference. Same time, after bathroom, before food/water. The 38 lbs is real, though. Bodies are weird.

👍 3

One thing that messed with my head: navel tape can track GI volume and sodium/carb water way more than fat over a few weeks. At your calories and step count, I’d look at a non-scale lean-mass proxy: are your main lifts holding or climbing, and has upper-arm/neck tape changed? In the trials, waist often trails weight loss, but 38 lb with only 1.25 in at the navel is worth checking against side-profile photos and how shirts fit across your upper back/chest. If those are visibly changing, I’d trust the trend and not panic.

👍 5 ❤️ 1

yo gamer/insomniac here. 38 lbs is wild, congrats. one thing i’d check: are you only taping at navel? my navel stayed thick forever while my narrowest waist and hip ratio moved first. i started logging navel, narrowest point, and 2" below navel, plus hips. turned out my lower belly was shrinking but my core/lower back was filling out from lifting, so navel looked stalled. what do those other spots say? if hip/narrowest are dropping, that’s still real waist progress even if the navel tape is being stubborn.

👍 7 ❤️ 3

Navel is a noisy sensor, not an anatomical waist. Measure at the midpoint between lowest rib and iliac crest and at the narrowest point, same time, after a normal exhale, no suck-in. Pants 38→36 is the better signal: fabric doesn’t care about posture or breath. I’d also compute waist-to-height: 42.25/66 ≈ 0.64, then recheck monthly. Are you measuring at navel because that’s where the tape naturally sits, or did you pick it as a proxy? Switching landmarks may show more progress than the scale.

👍 6 ❤️ 1

Airport bloat is real—my waist tape lies until I’m home and hydrated 😅

👍 1

Hey, huge congrats on 38! Small-town check-in: I do my monthly weigh at the pharmacy counter, same scale, same boots, and I’d trust your lifting log over the navel tape. Are your squats, rows, or presses holding steady or going up since January? If they’re stable or climbing, that’s a good sign you’re holding onto muscle even while the belly tape lags. I had a stretch where pants went down two sizes and my navel barely moved — trunk shape just changed slower. What are your main lifts doing now vs. the start?

👍 4

Road warrior here, often measuring in hotel bathrooms. My waist was the stubborn one too. I dropped 35 lbs and navel tape moved maybe an inch for months, then randomly dropped 2 inches over 6 weeks while the scale stalled. For me it tracked with lifting numbers holding steady, so I figured it was fat-loss distribution lag, not muscle vanishing. Are your main lifts (squat/row/deadlift) still progressing or at least holding? If they are, I’d stop letting the tape be the boss. Also, 38 lbs in 5 months is no joke — your 36 pants are the real scoreboard.

👍 9 ❤️ 1

Navel tape is the worst KPI; mine lagged the scale by weeks.

👍 5 ❤️ 1

I had a similar lag: scale down 34 lbs, navel barely changed, but hips and upper thigh each dropped ~3 inches. Waist caught up later in a 2-week whoosh after I stopped weighing daily and slept better. Are you tracking hip/thigh/chest too, or just waist? Also check your tape doesn’t stretch—my fabric one read 0.75 in different from a retractable. Monthly averages and side photos were more honest than single readings for me.

👍 4

Waist tape lags hard; mine stalled for weeks then dropped overnight. Pants don't lie 👖

👍 9

What are you doing for core/trunk work? Heavy deads, squats, carries, or lots of loaded walking can add mass around the waist even while fat drops. I’d track hip widest, upper thigh, and relaxed exhale at navel, plus monthly photos in the same shorts. If hips/thighs are shrinking and waist is static, that’s usually distribution plus core hypertrophy, not muscle loss. Also check how those 36s fit at the seat/thigh—sometimes waistbands lie. Are your lifts getting stronger?

👍 4 ❤️ 1

Waist at navel is a noisy proxy. It’s measuring subcutaneous + visceral + whatever your gut is doing that morning, plus anterior pelvic tilt from lifting. Track two or three fixed landmarks: narrowest point, iliac crest, and hip. If hips/narrowest are dropping while navel stalls, you’re probably recom

Waist at navel is a noisy proxy. At 5'6", 42.25" gives WHtR ~0.64, so it's still a meaningful signal, but distribution shifts can lag. I’d add iliac-crest and mid-thigh circumference, plus same-light photos. If your compound lifts are holding or climbing and pants are loos

👍 1

My navel tape always lags the scale, then catches up all at once—trendline, not snapshot.

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Same—scale drops, waist sulks, then one day pants are suddenly loose. You’re doing great!

👍 2

Very normal, and this exact pattern comes up every few months here. The tape often lags the scale by 6–10 weeks because fat loss is uneven and lifting can keep some water in your trunk. Sharp question: are your main lifts still stable or going up? If yes, muscle loss is unlikely. I’d also track upper arm and thigh measurements—mine moved there long before my waist did. Long view: 38 lbs in 5 months is excellent, and the waist usually catches up after another whoosh.

New here and honestly this is why I’m scared to tape measure lol—you’re doing amazing!

👍 7 ❤️ 3

Right there with you—my waist stalls then drops all at once lol. Pants are the real judge.

👍 4 ❤️ 2

First, 38 lbs is fantastic—don’t let the tape steal that. One thing I did: measure relaxed exhale and on a rest day, not the morning after leg day. My waist reads 1–1.5 in bigger for a day or two after squats/deadlifts, then settles. I also tok side-profile photos in the same shorts, and those showed change weeks before the tape did. My waist lagged about 3 months behind the scale, then dropped 2 inches over a month once my sleep got less chaotic. Are your 3 lift days lower-body heavy? That might explain the stubborn number. Small-town tracker here—our potluck bathroom tape is never invited to the party.

👍 1

Navel is the last load-bearing wall to come down. Mine finally moved around month six.

👍 2

Have you tracked hip, thigh, or upper-arm measurements? I had a similar pattern: scale down 32 lb, navel only -1.5", but hips -3.5" and thighs -2". Body seems to empty other depots first. I use a cloth tape, same morning before food/water, and log three spots: narrowest waist, navel, and 1" above the iliac crest, then average them weekly. Monthly front/side photos in the same light also helped. It stopped me over-reading one number. What are your hip and thigh numbers doing?

👍 1 ❤️ 1

One thing that helped me stop spiraling: I track a “low waist” at the top of my hip bones and my narrowest point, not just navel. My navel tape stayed stuck for ~4 months, then dropped almost 2 inches in 3 weeks after a scale stall. Are your lift numbers going up right now? When I add weight to squats/deadlifts, my trunk holds water for a few days and the tape reads high even while fat loss continues. Same time, after exhale, no sucking in. Congrats on 38—that’s a lot of work.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

38 lbs in 5 months is a lot, so I get the worry. New thought: what are your main lifts doing? If squat/bench/row are holding or climbing, that’s a decent real-world signal you’re not shedding much muscle. In the trials, waist often lags scale weight by several weeks—fat mobilization isn’t uniform, and lifting can keep some glycogen/water in the trunk. I’d track a few sites (chest, hips, thigh) and same-lighting photos, not just waist. Also, are you measuring after an overnight fast, before coffee/water, exhaled normally? If yes and strength is good, I’d kep going and reassess in 4–6 weeks. The tape may catch up.
